  • As interest in environmental pollution has increased, research in the field of filtration has been concentrated. While various types of filters have been developed, research on nanomaterial filtration has been limited. Since then, the development of new materials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has accelerated the study of new filters. Especially, CNTs have been among the most attractive materials ever synthesized for the development of nano-technologies. However, there are fundamental technical problems to be solved the development of new CNT composites. One of these problems is the development of a CNTs filter with excellent adsorption behavior and a filter that is capable of filtering a specific substance. In addition, it is necessary to develop a technology to increase the uniform distribution of CNTs, and to reduce the high processing cost of CNT composite production. In general, the chemical pathways for the production of CNTs include hydrocarbon gases, such as methane (CH4) and acetylene (C2H2), through metal nanoparticle catalysts. However, nano-metal particles have a strong coagulation phenomenon at high temperature by catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) method. In this review, attempts were made by applying three different reaction techniques to form CNTs on biomorphic carbon materials (BCM) coated with catalyst materials to control the shape and size of CNTs. Hierarchical carbon substrates with pore size of 100 ~ 300 ㎛ were developed using carbonization reaction. Linde type A (LTA) zeolite, silicalite-1, and mesoporous SiO2 template crystals were simultaneously synthesized and coated on the BCM by an in-situ hydrothermal process to synthesize high-yield CNTs composites.

  • In response to the carbon emission reduction trends and the depletion of natural sand caused by the use of cement in construction works, graphene oxide and porous feldspar were applied as countermeasures in this study. By using (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane-functionalized graphene oxide with enhanced bond characteristics, a concrete specimen was prepared with 5% less cement content than that in a standard mortar mix, and the compressive strengths of the specimens were examined. The compressive strengths of the specimen with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane-functionalized graphene oxide and porous feldspar and the specimen with standard mixing were 26MPa and 28MPa, respectively, showing only a small difference. In addition, both specimens met the compressive strength of cement mortar required for geotechnical structures. It is believed that a reasonable level of compressive strength was maintained in spite of the lower cement content because the high content of pozzolans, namely SiO2 and Al2O3, in the porous feldspar enhanced the reactions with Ca(OH)2 during hydration, the nano-sized graphene surface acted as a reactive surface for the hydration products to react actively, and the strong covalent bonding of the carboxyl functional group increased the bonding strength of the hydration products.

  • Optical characteristics of InGaAs quantum dot (QD) laser structures with an Al native oxide (AlOx) layer as a current-blocking layer were studied by means of photoluminescence (PL), PL excitation, and spatially-resolved micro-PL techniques. The InGaAs QD samples were first grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE), and then prepared by wet oxidation and thermal annealing techniques. For the InGaAs QD structures treated by the wet oxidation and thermal annealing processes, a broad PL emission due to the intermixing effect of the AlOx layer was observed at PL emission energy higher than that of the non-intermixed region. We observed a dominant InGaAs QD emission at about 1.1 eV in the non-oxide AlAs region, while InGaAs QD-related emissions at about 1.16 eV and $1.18{\sim}1.20eV$ were observed for the AlOx and the SiNx regions, respectively. We conclude that the intermixing effect of the InGaAs QD region under an AlOx layer is stronger than that of the InGaAs QD region under a non-oxided AlAs layer.

  • A cobalt oxide - tin oxide nanocomposite based gas sensor on an $SiO_2$ substrate was fabricated. Granular thin film of tin oxide was formed by a rheotaxial growth and thermal oxidation method using dc magnetron sputtering of Sn. Nano particles of cobalt oxide were spin-coated on the tin oxide. The cobalt oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by polymer-assisted deposition method, which is a simple cost-effective versatile synthesis method for various metal oxides. The thickness of the film can be controlled over a wide range of thicknesses. The composite structures thus formed were characterized in terms of morphology and gas sensing properties for reduction gas of $H_2$. The composites showed a highest response of 240% at $250^{\circ}C$ upon exposure to 4% $H_2$. This response is higher than those observed in pure $SnO_2$ (90%) and $Co_3O_4$ (70%) thin films. The improved response with the composite structure may be related to the additional formation of electrically active defects at the interfaces. The composite sensor shows a very fast response and good reproducibility.

  • We present a non-invasive technique to the measure temperature distribution in nano-sized porous thin films by means of the two-color laser-induced fluorescence (2-LIF) of rhodamine B. The fluorescence induced by the green line of a mercury lamp with the makeup of optical filters was measured on two separate color bands. They can be selected for their strong difference in the temperature sensitivity of the fluorescence quantum yield. This technique allows for absolute temperature measurements by determining the relative intensities on two adequate spectral bands of the same dye. To measure temperature fields, Silica (SiO2) nanoporous structure with 1-um thickness was constructed on a cover glass, and fluorescent dye was absorbed into these porous thin films. The calibration curves of the fluorescence intensity versus temperature were measured in a temperature range of $10-60^{\circ}C$, and visualization and measurement of the temperature field were performed by taking the intensity distributions from the specimen for the temperature field.

  • A solid-state reaction of $V_2O_5$ with AlMCM-41 followed by calcinations generated $V^{5+}$ species in the mesoporous materials. Dehydration results in the formation of a vanadyl species, $VO^{2+}$, that can be characterized by electron spin resonance (ESR). The chemical environment of the vanadium centers in V-AlMCM-41 was investigated by XRD, EDX, diffuse reflectance UV-VIS, ESR, $^{29}Si,\;^{27}Al,\;and\;^{51}V$ NMR. It was found that the vanadium species on the wall surface and inside the wall of the hexagonal tubular wall of the V-AlMCM-41 were completely oxidized to tetrahedral $V^{5+}$ and transformed to square pyramidal by additional coordination to water molecules upon hydration. The oxidized $V^{5+}$ species on the wall surfaces and inside the wall were also reversibly reduced to $VO^{2+}$ species or lower valences by thermal process.

  • The presence of the conduction interface in epitaxial $LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3$ thin films has opened up challenging applications which can be expanded to next-generation nano-electronics. The metallic conduction path is associated with two adjacent insulating materials. Such device structure is applicable to frequency-dependent impedance spectroscopy. Impedance spectroscopy allows for simultaneous measurement of resistivity and dielectric constants, systematic identification of the underlying electrical origins, and the estimation of the electrical homogeneity in the corresponding electrical origins. Such unique capability is combined with the intentional control on the interface composition composed of $SrTiO_3$ and $CaTiO_3$, which can be denoted by $SrxCa1-_xTiO_3$. The underlying $Sr_xCa1-_xTiO_3$ interface was deposited using pulsed-laser deposition, followed by the epitaxial $LaAlO_3$ thin films. The platinum electrodes were constructed using metal shadow masks, in order to accommodate 2-point electrode configuration. Impedance spectroscopy was performed as the function of the relative ratio of Sr to Ca. The respective impedance spectra were analyzed in terms of the equivalent circuit models. Furthermore, the impedance spectra were monitored as a function of temperature. The ac-based characterization in the 2-dimensional conduction path supplements the dc-based electrical analysis. The artificial manipulation of the interface composition will be discussed towards the electrical application of 2-dimensional materials to the semiconductor devices in replacement for the current Si-based devices.

  • This study investigates dynamic wetting behaviors of a water droplet placed on surfaces with different wettability and nano-structures. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties on as-received silicon wafers were prepared by fabricating thin films of hydrophobic polymer and hydrophilic nanoparticles via layer-by-layer coating. Dynamic advancing contact angle of droplets on the prepared surfaces was measured at various moving velocities of triple contact line with a high-speed video camera. As advancing velocity of triple contact line increased, dynamic advancing contact angle on the as-received silicon and hydrophobic surfaces sharply increased up to $80^{\circ}$ in the range of order of mm/sec whereas the SiO2 nanoparticle-coated hydrophilic surface maintained low contact angles of about $30^{\circ}$ and then it gradually increased in the velocity range of order of hundred mm/sec. The improved dynamic wetting ability observed on the nanostructured hydrophilic surface can benefit the performance of various phase-change heat transfer phenomena under forced convective flow.
