  • Temperature increase due to climate changes causes change of water temperature in rivers which results in change of water quality etc. and the change of river ecosystem has a great impact on human life. Analyzing the impact of current climate changes on air and water temperature is an important thing in adapting to the climate changes. This study examined the effect of climate changes through analyzing air temperature trend for Nakdong river basin and analyzed the elasticity of air-water temperature to understand the effect of climate changes on water temperature. For analysis air temperature trend, collecting air temperature data from the National Weather Service on main points in Nakdong river basin, and resampling them at the units of year, season and month, used as data for air temperature trend analysis. Analyzing for elasticity of air-water temperature, the data were collected by the Water Environment Information system for water temperature, while air temperature data were collected at the National Weather Service point nearest in the water temperature point. And using the results of trend analysis and elasticity analysis, the effect of climate changes on water temperature was examined estimating future water temperature in 20 years and 50 years after. It is judged that analysis on mutual impact between factors such as heat budget, precipitation and evapotranspiration on river water temperature affected by climate changes and river water temperature is necessary.

  • In this study, the variation of water quality was analyzed for six sites in major tributaries of the Nakdong River Basin. Standard-FDC (Flow Duration Curve) was developed using PM (Percentile Method), one of the statistical FDC estimation methods. The LDC (Load Duration Curve) was obtained using the developed FDC. The current method and the LDC evaluation method were compared and analyzed to evaluate the achievement of TWQ (Target Water Quality). Regarding the monthly flow rate variation, the five sites showed the distribution of the lowest flow rate between May and June, indicating a high probability of dry weathering of the streams. The variation of water quality confirmed the vulnerable timing of flow rate in each site, and it is therefore deemed necessary to plan to reduce T-P and TOC. A comparison and evaluation of TWQ showed that there was a difference between the TWQ values achieved by the two techniques. In addition, the margin ratio to the 50% excess ratio can be found in the LDC evaluation. The results of the LDC evaluation by section and by month showed whether or not the water quality was exceeded by flow conditions, along with the vulnerable sections and timing. Accordingly, it is judged that this method can be used for water quality management in TMDLs (Total Maximum Daily Loads).

  • There are many industrial factories in the central Nakdong river basin and have been occurred water pollution accidents by hazardous chemicals such as phenol, 1,4-dioxane and perchlorate. In this study, ten compounds of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) (dichlorvos, toluene-2,4-diisocyanate, 4,4'-methylenedianiline, 4,4'-methylenebis (2-chloroaniline), diethyl phthalate, di-n-butyl phthalate, butyl benzyl phthaltate, bis (2-ethylhexyl) adipate, benzophenone, 4,4'-bisphenol A) of hazardous chemicals which may be potentially discharged into the Nakdong river, were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with disk-type solid-phase extraction. Accuracy and precision were in the range of 75.6~110.5%, and 4.6~12.7%, respectively and recovery was in the range of 72.4~127.9%. Three compounds (bis (2-ethylhexyl)adipate, benzophenone, 4,4'-bisphenol A) were detected in industrial wastewater such as wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and wastewater discharge facilities in the Nakdong River basin.

  • The estuary of Nakdong river is very influenced by the freshwater contained nutrients and organic materials. The response results of these influences are eutrophication and red tide outbreak in this region. Concentration of chlorophyll a was 0.78~62.55$\mu\textrm{g}$/L in February 1.20~21.29$\mu\textrm{g}$/L in April 1.88~188.35$\mu\textrm{g}$/L in June and 0.78~11.21$\mu\textrm{g}$/L in August respectively. The decrease of chlorophyll a is considered that residence time is shorten by increase of freshwater discharge and unfavorable growth condition of phytoplankton is created by diffusion of low salinity and increase of turbidity. The phytoplankton maximum region located inner side of this estuary during winter season whereas it was moved to outer side when mean discharge of the Nakdong risver was increased, Therefore the variation of phytoplankton maximum region was affected by input discharge from the Nakdong river basin.

  • The objective of this study is to assess Sejong University River Forecast (SURF) model which consists of a continuous rainfall-runoff model and measured streamflow assimilation using ensemble Kalman filter technique for streamflow forecast on Nakdong river basin. The study area is divided into 43 subbasins. The forecasted streamflows are evaluated at 12 measurement sites during flood season from 2006 to 2007. The forecasted ones are improved due to the impact of the measured streamflows assimilation. In effectiveness indices corresponding to 1~5 h forecast lead times, the accuracy of the forecasted streamflows with the assimilation approach is improved by 46.2~30.1% compared with that using only the rainfall-runoff model. The mean normalized absolute error of forecasted peak flow without and with data assimilation approach in entering 50% of the measured rainfall, respectively, the accuracy of the latter is improved about 40% than that of the former. From these results, SURF model is able to be used as a real-time river forecast model.
