The growth and removal capacity of nitrogen and phosphorus of Chlorella vulgaris were evaluated in artificial wastewater with different nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations as element growing components for microalgae growth. The nitrogen concentration was varied in 9, 15, 30 and 60 mg-N/L with fixed phosphorus concentration of 3 mg-P/L. The growth and phosphorus removal capacity of C. vulgaris were high at initial nitrogen concentration of 15 and 30 mg-N/L, and the corresponding N/P ratios calculated were 5 and 10. In the case of varying in 1.5, 3, 6 and 10 mg-P/L of phosphorus concentration with fixed nitrogen concentration of 30 mg-N/L, the growth and removal capacity of nitrogen and phosphorus were excellent with phosphorus concentration of 3 and 6 mg-P/L. The corresponding N/P ratios were shown as 10 and 5. Therefore, the appropriate N/P ratio was concluded between 5 and 10 for wastewater treatment using C. vulgaris.
This study was performed to find the optimum mixing ratio of paper waste in composting of mixture of swine feces and newspaper. Using the experimental setting of aeration rate which was found in the experiment carried out priorly, and moisture contents reported in other literature, just the initial C:N ratios were differentiated by mixing different amount of newspaper with the same amount of swine feces. This study was carried out by operating 4 experimental cornposting reactors of bench scale for 3 weeks. The followings are the conclusions that were derived from this study. 1. During composting reaction, the C:N ratio of each cornposter was decreased. Degree of decrease was in order of run 3, run 2, run 4, and run 1 of which initial C:N ratio was 30, 25, 35, and 20 respectively. All of the final composts were found to be completed composting reaction. 2. Ash contents of each reactor increased rapidly in order of run 3, run 2, run 4, and run 1. The absolute values of quadratic effect coefficients of each second order regression function was 0.059, 0.038, 0.032, and 0.030 respectively. Ash contents evolution trend had a linear correlation with the C:N ratio trend. (r=-0.96932, p<0.05) 3. The range of highest temperatures reached during composting was 47.2-53.5$\circ$C. Those were not significantly different from one another. Thermophilic temperatures were maintained in the range of 48-108 hours. 4. Contents of heavy metal detected in the final compost were lower than those of Korean and European standards. 5. Concentration range of Nitrogen in the final compost was 1.11-2.27%, and that of phosphorus was 8.40-10.70 mg/kg. 6. The optimum C:N ratio which has been proposed without the consideration of types of bulking agents should be re-examined. Biodegradabilities of each bulking agents was thought to be important factor when determining the optimum initial C:N ratio for cornposting.

The influence of the consumed carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio on mycelial morphology was investigated in cultures of Mortierella alpina using shake flasks. The consumed C/N ratio was varied from 5 to 32 under the condition that the total initial amount of the carbon and nitrogen sources was 50g/L. The whole mycelia and filamentous mycelia exhibited no relationship with the consumed C/N ratio below a consumed C/N ratio of 20 in the presence of either excess carbon or excess nitrogen. However, when the consumed C/N ratio increased higher than 20, the mycelial sizes increased in proportion to the consumed C/N ratio. However, the area ratio of filamentous mycelia to total mycelia was found to be independent of the consumed C/N ratio, and remained constant at 0.82. In the case of a fixed consumed C/N ratio of 20, the whole mycelia and filamentous mycelia increased in proportion to the degree of the medium strength, yet the area ratio of filamentous mycelia to total mycelia remained unchanged at 0.76. Accordingly, these results show that fungal morphology and mycelial size are both affected by the ratio of carbon to nitrogen. The findings of the current study will be helpful in obtaining the efficient production of useful bioproducts from fungal cultures.
A number of different methods have been used for modeling the sorption of volatile organic chlorinated compounds such as tetrachloroethylene/perchloroethylene (PCE). In this study, PCE was adsorbed in several natural sorbents, i.e., Pahokee peat, vermicompost, BionSoil®, and natural soil, in the batch experiments. Several sorption models such as linear, Freundlich, solubility-normalized Freundlich model, and Polanyi-Manes model (PMM) were used to analyze sorption isotherms. The relationship between sorption model parameters, organic carbon content (foc), and elemental C/N ratio was studied. The organic carbon normalized partition coefficient values (log Koc = 1.50-3.13) in four different sorbents were less than the logarithm of the octanol-water partition coefficient (log Kow = 3.40) of PCE due to high organic carbon contents. The log Koc decreased linearly with log foc and log C/N ratio, but increased linearly with log O/C, log H/C, and log (N+O)/C ratio. Both log KF,oc or log KF,oc decreased linearly with log foc (R2 = 0.88-0.92) and log C/N ratio (R2 = 0.57-0.76), but increased linearly with log (N+O)/C (R2 = 0.93-0.95). The log qmax,oc decreased linearly as log foc and log C/N increased, whereas it increased with log O/C, log H/C and log (N+O)/C ratios. The log qmax,oc increased linearly with (N+O)/C indicating a strong dependence of qmax,oc on the polarity index. The results showed that PCE sorption behaviors were strongly correlated with the physicochemical properties of soil organic matter (SOM).
Nitriding treatments were conducted on tool steel (SKD 61) at a temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr using high vacuum direct current (DC) plasma, with ammonia and argon as source gases. The structural and compositional changes produced in the nitrided layers by applying different ratios of Ar to $NH_{3}\;(n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}) were investigated using glancing x-ray diffraction (GXRD), optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), micro-Vickers hardness testing, and pin-on-disc type tribometer. Nitriding case depths of around of $50{\mu}m$ were produced, varying slightly with different ratios of $n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}. It was found that the specimen surface hardness was 1150 Hv with $n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}=1, increasing to a maximum value of 1500 Hv with $n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}=5. With a further increase in ratio to $n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}=10, the surface hardness of the specimen reduced slightly to a value of 1370 Hv. These phenomena were caused by changes of the crystallographic structure of the nitride layers, i.e the $\gamma'-Fe_{4}N$ phase only was observed in the sample treated with $n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}$=1, and the intensity of the $\gamma'-Fe_{4}N$ phase were reduced but new phase of $\varepsilon'-Fe_{3}N$, which was known as a high hardness, with increasing $n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}. Also, the relative weight loss of counterface of the pin-on-disc with unnitrided steel was 0.2. And that of nitrided steel at a gas mixture ($n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}) of 1, 5, 7, and 10 was 0.4, 0.7, 0.6, and 0.5 mg, respectively. This means that the wear resistance of the nitrided samples could be increased by a factor of 2 at least than that of unnitrided steel.
This paper deals with the influence of chemical oxygen demand to nitrogen ratio ((COD/N) ratio) on the performance of an membrane bioreactor. We aim at establishing relations between COD/N ratio, organisms' distribution and sludge properties (specific resistance to filtration (SRF) and membrane fouling). It is also essential to define new criteria to characterize the autotrophic microorganisms, as the measurements of apparent removal rates of ammonium seem irrelevant to characterize their specific activity. Two experiments (A and B) have been carried on a 30 L lab scale membrane bioreactor with low COD/N ratio (2.3 and 1.5). The obtained results clearly indicate the role of the COD/N ratio on the biomass distribution and performance of the membrane bioreactor. New specific criteria for characterising the autotrophic microorganisms activity, is also defined as the ratio of maximum ammonium rate to the specific oxygen uptake rate in the endogenous state for autotrophic bacteria which seem to be constant whatever the operating conditions are. They are about 24.5 to 23.8 $gN-NH_4{^+}/gO_2$, for run A and B, respectively. Moreover, the filterability of the biological suspension appear significantly lower, specific resistance to filtration and membrane fouling rate are less than $10^{14}m^{-2}$ and $0.07\;10^{12}m^{-1}.d^{-1}$ respectively, than in conventional MBR confirming the adv < antage of the membrane bioreactor functioning under low COD/N ratio.
This study was conducted to isolate the Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) and to find out the distribution of 15 serovars mainly in southern Gyeonggi province, Korea. From July 2011 to Nov. 2012, a total of 2,204 slaughter pigs (110 herds) were inspected for evaluation of APP like pneumonic lesions. 48 (33.8%) APP strains were isolated from the 142 lungs and identified using PCR assays (cps, apx/omlA, biovar). Consequently, the serotype ratio were as in the following; type2 41.7% (n=20), type5 33.3% (n=16), type12 10.4% (n=5), type1 6.2% (n=3), type4 and 7 2.1% (n=1) and unknown 4.2% (n=2). Also serological test was implemented for 452 (83 herds) serum samples randomly collected from above slaughter pigs using commercial ELISA kits. The positive ratio of each serotype for tested pigs were 19.1% (77/404) on [2], 7.1% (32/452) on [3, 6, 8], 6.9% (28/404) on [5a, 5b], 6.2% (28/452) on [4, 7], 2.8% (9/320) on [12], 2.0% (9/452) on [1, 9, 11] and 0.0% (0/452) on [10]. And 49.3% (223/452) of pigs were positive on apxIV antibody. On the basis of latter screening test, the infected farm ratio accounted for 71.1% (59/83) and that was much higher than previously reported data.
This study was conducted to evaluate dietary fat intake and its effect on the plasma lipids and fatty acids composition in plasma and red blood cells(RBC) in 96 healthy Korean female college student. Three-day food intakes were recorded, and fasting blood samples were collected and analyzed for plasma total cholesterol and triglyceride. Fatty acid compositions were determined in plasma and RBC membrane. Oleic acid was the most abundant in diet, followed by palmitic and linoleic acids. Mean daily intake of cholesterol was 219$\pm$127mg, mean plasma cholesterol was 160$\pm$24mg/이 and mean plasma triglyceride was 68$\pm$25mg/dl. Plasma fatty acids were mostly composed of linoleic, palmitic and oleic acids, while palmitic, stearic and arachidonic acids were high in RBC membrane. Plasma triglyceride showed positive correlation with BMI. Among dietary fatty acids, arachidonic acid, EPA and DHA showed negative correlation with plasma total cholesterol. Plasma triglyceride levels were negatively correlated with dietary arachidonic acid, plasma n-6 fatty acids and plasma polyunsaturated fatty acids. Dietary EPA and DHA levels were positively correlated with plasma EPA, dietary n-3/n-6 ratio were positively correlated with plasma n-3 fatty acids and n-3/n-6 ratio. Highly significant correlations were shown between the levels in plasma and RBC for several fatty acids.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of rapeseed and linseed oil supplementations on performance and meat quality of lambs. Methods: The experiment was conducted on 18 growing (100-day-old) lambs of $19.7{\pm}1.9kg$ live weight, assigned to 3 groups of 6 animals each. Control lambs were fed meadow hay and concentrate alone. Experimental animals additionally received rapeseed or linseed oils at a dose of 50 g/d. The lambs were slaughtered at an average body weight of $35.7{\pm}0.5kg$. Results: The dressing percentage was higher in lambs fed rapeseed oil. Total saturated fatty acids (SFA) and C15:0, C16:0, C17:0, C21:0, C24:0 were lower in longissimus dorsi muscle (MLD) in lambs fed linseed oil. Supplementation of diet with linseed oil decreased concentrations of total monounsaturated fatty acids and C16:1, C17:1, C18:1 cis-9 in MLD. The concentrations of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and C18:3 n-3, C20:5 n-3 in MLD were higher in lambs fed linseed oil than in other groups. Oils supplementation to diets resulted in increased concentration of C22:6 n-3 in MLD. The inclusion of linseed oil into the diet increased the contents of total PUFA, n-3 PUFA and C18:3 n-3, C20:5 n-3, C22:6 n-3 in semitendinosus muscle in comparison to control. A tendency towards a lower n:6/n:3 ratio in MLD was observed when lambs were supplemented linseed oil. Conclusion: The supplementation of linseed oil to diets seems to reduce the concentration of SFA and increase the concentration of n-3 PUFA. The n-6/n-3 ratio is an important nutritional factor, and its value has been favorably decreased below 2, thereby achieving an important target related to human health. Due to these changes carcass fatty acid profile was improved, and so enhanced lamb meat healthy properties.

The Reaction of S-methyl-S-cysteine(L-Smc) with racemic $s-cis-[Co(demba)Cl_2]-1$ (Hydmedba = $NN'-dimethylethylenediamine-NN'-di-\alpha-butyric$, acid) yields ${\Delta}$-s-cis-[Co(dmedba)(L-Smc)] 2 with N, O-chelation. Oxidation of sulfur of 2 with $H_2O_2$ in a 1 : 1 mole ratio gives ${\Delta}$-s-cis[Co(dmedba)(L-S(O)mc)] 3 having an uncoordinated sulfenate group. Oxidation of sulfur of L-Sm with $H_2O_2in$ a 1: 1 mole ratio produces S-methyl-L-cysteinesulfenate (L-S(O)me) 5. Direct reaction of 1 with 5 in basic medium gives an N.O-chelated ${\Delta}$s-cis[Co(dmedba)(L-S(O)mc)-N.O], which turmed out be same as obtained by oxidation of 2, while an N, S-chelated ${\Delta}$-s-cis-[Co(dmedba)(S-S(O)mc)-N,O] complex 4 is obtained in acidic medium from the reaction of 1 with 5. This is one of the rare $[$Co^{III}$(N_2O_2-type$ ligand)(amino acid)] type complex preparations, where the reaction conditions determine which mode of N, O and N, S caelation modes is favored.
