Power Dissipation in a RF Capacitively Coupled Plasma

  • Low pressure plasmas play a key role in many areas including electronic, aerospace, automotive, biomedical, and toxic waste management industries, and the advantages of the plasma are well known the processing procedure is established. However, the insight behavior of the discharges remains a mystery, even though a simple geometry as capacitive discharges. In this work, we measured RF power dissipation in capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) at various experiment conditions with potential probe and RF current probe. Through the results, we will have a clearer view of the inner nature of the CCP.

피라밋의 일조특성(日照特性) 연구 (Insolation Phase of the Pyramids)

  • For all the variety of past studies on the pyramids of Old Kingdom of Egypt, they still basically remain in 'enigma and mystery' as Giedion rightly puts in. This paper deals directly with the three most obvious facts about the pyramids : their cardinal orientation, the varying slopes, and above all, their magnitude. The prominent triangles of their once polished faces were there to be seen from the Nile valley as they shined or shaded under the Sun. The northern faces, especially, went in and out of the Sun in accordence with the seasonal variation of the solar declination, The steeper northern faces which turned into shade in high summer noon could have been warning signs of oncoming inundation of Nile, and the milder slopes that suddenly began to shine in some early spring noons could have been the vernal alarms to awaken the peasants to their timely toil on the fresh land. Dates and hours of insolation on the northern faces of pyramids are graphically and numerically computed.

백제 여래상의 복식 연구 (A Study on the Costume of Buddha′s Idols in Paekche Period)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze styles of costume and understand meanings related to costume embodied in the images of Buddha in Baekche period. Visual and textual analysis of the paintings include the images of Buddha in Baekche period was used for the research. The results of this study were summarized as fellows; Budah's hair style is identified as simple, Gae. Buddha wears Sanghati(outer wear) made of Tongeun and Peundanwoogeun, and many cases Sanghati made of Tongeun are usually seen. Three kinds of upper garment were identified; Samkaksika, right and left crossed upper garment, and Peunsam. Samkaksika was frequently seen in the paintings. Lower garment was a Nirasana reach to the ankle, was worn with a belt. Two skirts were also seen occasionally. The symbolic meaning of costume of Buddha was related to its religious meaning and identified as majesty and saintliest, which is harmonized with her simple costume styles. The wrapped style of costume, which did not show the contour of the buddha's body adds mystery. Also, the styles of costume created by different wrapping methods signify originality.

The Progenitors of Type Ia Supernovae

  • Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) have provided the first evidence that the Universe is accelerating. Nevertheless, the nature of the progenitors has remained a mystery, indeed controversial. In this talk I will first summarize the main supernova explosion mechanisms and the observational classification of supernovae. I will show how SNe Ia can be used as standardizable distance candles and discuss possible limitations of the method. In the main part of the talk I will discuss the main progenitor models that have been proposed, emphasizing the problems and advantages of each, and how they can be observationally tested. I will then present some relatively recent discoveries by the Palomar Transient Factory and most recently in M82 that directly constrain the progenitors in a few cases.

  • Plants are inherited spatial and temporal coordination systems in their growth and differentiation processes which are precisely governed by the two interlocked control systems; autogenous and environmental. Looking into the overall course of plant development from molecular to organismal level, it can be comparable to a concerto for plant hormones, environmental stimuli and plant genomic orchestra conducted by an unidentified virtuoso. Some of the recent significant attempts to puzzle out the mystery of the life processes of plant development are briefly reviewed. The revolutionary advances in understanding the mystic processes are contemporarily achieved by the application of various molecular techniques. The characterization of plant genomes is now attained through recombinant DNA approaches, and the sensitive detection of specific gene products during the plant development is perimitted by the immunochemical procedures. However, along with the recognition of underlying molecular events such as developmental changes in gene expression and hormone-receptor interrelation associated with tissue sensitivity to hormones, more emphasis should be placed upon the physiological approaches of organismal level for the understanding the correlative systems of the developmental processes of plants as intact eukaryotic organisms.

A Computational Study on Turbulent Flow Characteristics around Full-form Tankers

  • This paper presents the result of a computational study on the wake characteristics of two tanker models, i.e. HSVA and Mystery hull forms. The focus of the study is on the distributions of axial, radial and tangential velocities of the two hull forms in way of the propeller, especially over the propeller disk. The effect of bilge vortices on the velocity distribution is also concerned. For the computation of stern and wake flows of the two hull farms, the incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Wavier-Stokes(RANS) equations are numerically solved by the second order finite difference method, which employs a four stage Runge-Kutta scheme with a residual averaging technique and the Baldwin-Lomax model. The calculated pressure distributions on the hull surface and the axial, radial and tangential velocity distributions over the propeller disk are presented for the two hull forms. Finally, the result of wake analysis for the computed wake distribution over the propeller disk is given in comparison with those for the experimental wake distribution fur the both hull forms.

The Medium of Poetry: Romantic Writing and the Cultural Politics of Physicality in "Hyperion"

  • This essay addresses the missing conversation in Keats studies by showing how an enduring mystery of Romantic writing—the medium of poetic process and the physical conditions of enunciation—remains a central question in the Hyperion fragments. It is my argument that the tropes of material textuality prevalent in the Hyperions represent a bold cultural statement in which Keats reacts to the major premises underlying the Romantic culture's notion of poetry as abstraction: the Romantic notion of literary (re)production as a product of the activity of a mind. Keats's self-conscious, symbolic representation of the mechanics of poetry-making can be read as an investigation of the ways in which the Romantics were aware of and even eager to articulate the instabilities of their position on the relations between words and things. This essay does not focus exclusively on the physical embodiment of Keats's work as such, so much as the second-generation Romantic poet's contribution to the Romantics' self-conscious and critical understanding of the depiction, perception and ideologies of their poetry and its mediation.

Chemical and Kinematic Properties of Sagittarius Stellar Streams

  • We use Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope, and Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment data to analyze the kinematic and chemical properties of stellar members in Sagittarius(Sgr) tidal streams. Using distances, positions, proper motions, and angular momenta of stars around the Sgr streams, we gather clean sample of Sgr member stars. We find that the leading arm has different chemical, kinematic, orbital characteristics from those of the trailing arm and the remnant of Sgr. In particular, the leading arm shows relatively lower eccentricity distribution than the trailing arm, suggesting their origin may differ or they have experienced different dynamical evolution, which is in somewhat mystery.

Discovery and in-depth research on Interstellar Objects

  • Interstellar objects (ISOs) provide essential information on the physical and chemical properties of the environment when extrasolar systems are formed. Since 2017, two interstellar objects, 1I/2017 ('Oumuamua) and C/2019 Borisov, have been observed passing our solar system. The first interstellar object, named 1I/2017 ('Oumuamua), exhibits several peculiar properties that cannot be explained based on our knowledge of solar system objects, including extreme elongation and non-gravitational acceleration. Its nature and origins remain a mystery. In this talk, I will first describe the basic observational properties of 'Oumuamua and review various theories proposed to explain these features. I will then present our results, ruling out the most promising proposal that 'Oumuamua was made out of molecular hydrogen ice (solid hydrogen). Finally, I will discuss prospects for the detection of ISOs with LSST and in-depth research through multi-wavelength and tracers.

괴정(槐亭)의 잔존 수종을 통해 본 괴목(槐木) 식재의 문화변용 (A Study on the Acculturation of Guǐmok(槐木) Plantings through the Remaining Species of Guǐjeong(槐亭))

  • '괴(槐)'를 전부지명소로 하는 괴정(槐亭)과 그 주변에 잔존하는 괴목(槐木)에 대한 문헌 및 현장조사 그리고 인터뷰 등을 통해 실제 괴정에 존재했던 수목 등을 파악함으로써, 회화나무와 느티나무의 문화변용(文化變容) 실태와 그 변용을 이끈 요인과 사유방식을 추적할 목적으로 시도된 본 연구의 주요내용은 다음과 같다. 본 연구에서는 괴정의 분포와 형태 그리고 정자 명칭과 조영자와의 관련성 등을 확인하는 한편 괴정에 내포된 의미 분석을 시도하였다. 핵심적으로 괴정 주변의 잔존 수종과는 관련 없이 괴목 식재의 표상성을 지배하는 수목은 지역에 관계없이 회화나무인 것으로 판단되었는바 이는 회화나무 문화가 느티나무로 완전히 변용되지 못하고 수용된 내면적 요인으로 간주된다. 괴정 조영자의 아호나 당호 등을 근거로 판단할 때 '삼괴' 또는 '삼공'을 표상하는 수종이 회화나무였음은 조선시대 전(全) 시대에 걸쳐 인식되었으나 지역 및 식재지 여건에 따라 선별적으로 느티나무가 회화나무를 대신하여 변용 식재되었을 확률이 매우 높음이 확인되었다. 괴정에 잔존하는 괴목은 느티나무와 회화나무였으나 전국적으로 괴목을 표상하는 나무는 느티나무가 우월한 점이 밝혀졌다. 이는 일종의 문화변용의 사례로 간주할 수 있으나 그렇다고 지역적으로 완전한 문화변용이 이루어진 것은 아닌 것으로 보인다. 영남권에서는 비영남권과 달리 화화나무를 괴목으로 의식한 정황이 확연히 드러난 것이 이를 반증한다. 괴목의 문화변용을 이끈 문화적 변수로는 중국과 한국이라는 지리적 공간, 조선사회의 유교적 관행 그리고 왕래 및 서신교류, 서적 전파를 통한 중국과의 네트워크 강도 등이 깊이 개재된 것으로 보인다. 또한 괴목 문화는 전 계층이 아닌 상류계층의 문화관습으로 이어져 온 것으로 추정되는바 영남권에서는 괴목을 훼나무 즉 회화나무로 인식하고자 행동화 하는 독자적 적응이 매우 강하게 일어났다고 볼 수 있다. 영남과 비영남지역이라는 문화권역의 차이 또한 괴목 식재의 내부적 문화변동 요인으로 간주된다.
