Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to examine effectiveness for enhancing self-expression and self-esteem by applying music therapy to the chronic mental-handicapped. The subjects were the chronic mental-handicapped who receive rehabilitation service at the community rehabilitation center, and who have over 10 years in the duration of disease. 1he music therapy activity was progressed with totally 14 sessions during 7 weeks with twice a week. This study confirmed t-test that is verification of difference in the mean, in order to examine difference between before and after music therapy in self-expression and self-esteem of the chronic mental-handicapped, and researched into qualitative case. The findings are as follows. First, as a result of score in self-expression scale, the significant improvement was shown after music therapy compared to before music therapy. The significant difference was indicated in verbal self-expression, phonetic self-expression, and non-verbal self-expression, which are its sub-spheres. Thus, the conclusion was obtained as saying that music therapy is effective for enhancing self-expression. Second, as a result of score in self-esteem scale, the significant difference was shown after music therapy compared to before music therapy. Thus, the conclusion was obtained as saying that music therapy is effective for enhancing self-esteem. Through the above results, the music therapy showed effectiveness of self-expression ability and self-esteem in the chronic mental-handicapped at the community rehabilitation center, thereby having been confirmed to be possibly utilized as rehabilitation program for the social skill ability and the social adjustment of the chronic mental-handicapped.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of music therapy on pain, depression, and anxiety in terminally ill patients. Methods: Twenty patients in the experimental group were provided with music via headphones for 30-40 min at a time as they requested for 2 weeks, whereas no music was provided for the nineteen patients in the control group. Data were collected using a questionnaire. The research instruments included Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Depression & Anxiety Inventory Scale. Data were analyzed using ${\chi}^2$-test, t-test, and Fisher's exact test, using SPSS 15.0. Results: There were significant decreases in the scores of pain at present (t=-2.54, p<.05), depression (t=-2.187, p<.05) and anxiety (Z=-2.114, p<.05) in the experimental group compared to those in the control group. Conclusion: Music therapy is considered non-invasive and inexpensive intervention and can be easily applied to alleviate pain, depression and anxiety for terminally ill patients.

  • Purpose: We investigated the effects of music on pain, blood pressure, and pulse in patients with chronic back pain. We tried to find some change of satisfaction of treatment and a sense. Method: We recruited total 30 patients with chronic back pain, who had pain from lumbago for more than six months. Subjects received electrotherapy and electrotherapy with music one at a time during me test, and subjects received one in the morning and the other one in the afternoon. We compared the test results between the electrotherapy and electrotherapy with music. Visual Analogue Scale was used to check the effect on pain. Blood pressure and pulse were checked, too. The gathered informatio was analyzed by t-test, independent sample t-test, and chi-square test. Results: There was statistically not significant difference between electrotherapy and electrotherapy with the music in VAS(Visual Analogue Scale)(p>0.05). There were statistically some significant differences between two groups in systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, and the pulse(p<0.05). Subject group showed statistically higher scores of satisfaction(p<0.05). There was significant difference between two groups(p<0.05) in the tingling and vibration sense. Conclusion: we found that the lumbago patients who are treated by electrotherapy with the music did not have additional difference in relief of pain, but electrotherapy with music can get better effects on their blood pressure, the pulse, satisfaction, and tingling-vibration sense. This means that the patients receive their treatment comfortably with rest. Therefore, We consider that it is desirable to play music to lumbago patients to offer the better treatment service to the patients.

  • Objective : This study aims to investigate the effect of listening to music for the reduction of unilateral neglect in stroke patients. Methods : This study used a single subject (A-B) design for a stroke patient with unilateral neglect. The subject was trained for 12 sessions in total. Unilateral neglect was measured using a line bisection test and catherine bergego scale. Results : The line bisection test showed decreased mean error scores of treatment period(B) compared with baseline period(A). and catherine bergego scale showed slightly decreased total scores of treatment period(B) compared with baseline period(A). Conclusion : The listening to music showed a beneficial effect for the reduction of unilateral neglect.

  • This research studied the effects of music experiences on the language development of toddlers in the day care setting. Subjects were 44(23 experimental group; 21 control group) 29- to 42-month-old children. The experimental group experienced 10 weeks of music activities, including musical sense, singing, listening, playing instruments, improvisation, finger plays, movement, simple games, word-sound music games and music routines. Language development was tested by the Preschool Receptive-Expressive Language Scale(Kim et al. 2003). Significant differences were found in the receptive language development of 30- to 36-month-old and in the expressive language development of 36- to 42-month-old toddlers, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of music therapy on the state anxiety and the vital signs in ophthalmic inpatients experiencing momentary visual disturbance. The patients listened to the music for or over 30 minutes a time for 3 days The subjects for this study were twenty-eights experiencing momentary visual disturbance in ophthalmic department of a hospital in Kwangju. They were assigned to two groups, fourteen to a experimental group and fourteen to a control group. The data were collected from November 22 to December 4, 1999 by means of state anxiety scale questionnaire and measurement of vital signs. The data were analyzed with SPSS programs. The results were as follows; 1. There were significant differences between the two groups on anxiety score after music therapy(t=-2.95 p=.007). 2. The first hypothesis that the experimental group who received music therapy would have less anxiety score than the control group who did not receive music therapy was supported (t=8.98, p=.000). 3. There were no significant differences between the two groups on change of vital signs after music therapy. 4. The second hypothesis that the experimental group who received music therapy would have more relived vital signs than the control group who did not receive music therapy was not supported. In conclusion, music therapy can be effective nursing intervention in decreasing anxiety of ophthalmic in-patients experiencing momentary visual disturbance.
