The Mogok metamorphic belt is a highland area mainly consisting of Archean crystalline rocks, where many ruby mines were distributed in the past, and jewelry has been identified in its alluvium as placer deposit. Minerals that are usually identified with ruby include spinel, garnet, and rubellite. The conglomerates that form the alluvium in which jewelry is found mainly consist of gneiss and clastic pegmatites. In Singu, Mogok, and Momeik areas, a number of pegmatites containing jewelry are distributed in the intrusions of Mogok metamorphic rocks, diorites, and granites. In Singu pegmatites, rubellite, goshenite, and blue and violet apatite occur as gems. In Momeik pegmatites, mushroom-type rubellite, petalite, hambergite, pollucite, and aquamarine can be found. In Mogok pegmatites, topaz, aquamarine, goshenite, and herderite occur are present.
Soybeans with brown, black, and yellow seed coats were compared to total phenolic contents and antioxidant activities including 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radicals. Also, 3 seed coats were examined for inhibitory activities on tyrosinase and lipoxygenase-1 on the basis of spectrophotometric and polarographic methods. Among seed coat extracts, 80% methanol extract of brown soybean seed coat showed the highest total phenolic contents ($68.9{\pm}3.29\;mg$ GAE/g) as well as exhibited potent scavenging effects on the DPPH ($IC_{50}=4.3\;{\mu}g/mL$) and ABTS ($IC_{50}=3.7\;{\mu}g/mL$) radicals. In a polarographic experiment, this extract was potentially inhibited the oxidation of L-tyrosine and L-3,4-dihydroxy-phenylalanin (L-DOPA) catalyzed by mushroom tyrosinase with $IC_{50}$ values of 12.4 and $63.7\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. It was also detected inhibition of the tyrosinase catalyzed oxidation of L-DOPA with an $IC_{50}$ value of 120.3 mg/mL in UV spectrophotometric experiment. In addition, this extract inhibited the linoleic acid peroxidation catalyzed by lipoxygenase-1 with an $IC_{50}$ value of $4.0\;{\mu}g/mL$. These results suggest that brown soybean may possess more beneficial effect on human health than black and yellow soybeans.

This study was conducted to investigate the physiological activity of extracts of fresh mushrooms. The components were extracted by hot water; subsequently, the hot-water extract was subjected to 60% ethanol precipitation to yield high-molecular-weight (HMW) and low-molecular-weight (LMW) fractions. Total polyphenol contents, $\beta$-glucan contents, electron-donating ability (EDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, nitrite-scavenging activity, fibrinolytic activity, nitric oxide (NO) production, and inhibition of NO production of the mushroom extracts were measured using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine macrophages, RAW 264.7 cells. The extracts of Lentinus edodes (Berk.) Singer and Pleurotus ostreatus (Fr.) Kummer contained the highest levels of $\beta$-glucan (33.5% and 25.57%, respectively). Further, the LMW fractions of the Phellinus linteus contained the highest levels of polyphenols (233.23 mg/g). The EDA of LMW fractions (10 mg/mL) of the Phellinus linteus and Agaricus bisporus were 80.74% and 51.35%, respectively. Further, SOD-like activities of the LMW fractions were high as compared to those of the HMW fractions. Nitrite-scavenging activities of the LMW fractions (pH 1.2; concentration, 10 mg/mL) of the Phellinus linteus and Pleurotus ostreatus (Fr.) Kummer were 75.95% and 41.05%, respectively. The fibrinolytic activity of the LMW fractions of all mushrooms showed no enzyme activity by fibrin plate assay. The fibrinolytic activity of the extracts of Tricholoma matsutake was the greatest inhibitory activity at 60.4%. Further study revealed that the mushroom extracts exhibited anti-inflammatory effects on RAW 264.7 cells. The LMW fraction ($500\;{\mu}g/mL$) of the Phellinus linteus considerably inhibited NO production (100%).
Isolates of Trichoderma spp. collected from Pleurotus ostreatus and P. eryngii beds, which included loosened substrate compactness and development of green colour, were grouped into three species. The occurrence of different species of Trichoderma was as T. cf. virens(70.8%), T. longibrachiatum(16.7%) and T. harzianum(12.5%). The conidia of Trichoderma spp. were ellipsoidal, obovoid and phialides were bowling pins, lageniform and the length of phialides was $3.5{\sim}10.0{\times}1.3{\sim}3.3{\mu}m$. Phialides of T. cf. virens and T. harzianum were tending clustered, but it was solitary disposition in T. longibrachiatum. T. cf. virens was characterized by predominantly effuse conidiation, sparingly branched, and fertile to the apex and it was penicillate type. RAPD analysis could detect variability amongst three different species of Trichoderma using two newly designed URP-primers. However, intra-specific variation could not be detected in all the isolates except for rDNA sequence data classified Trichoderma isolates into three distinct groups representing three species. The profiles of rDNA sequences of isolates representing a species showed high similarity in T. cf. virens and T. harzianum. However, there was a variation in rDNA sequences of isolates representing T. longibrachiatum. The results of present study reveals that molecular techniques of RAPD and rDNA sequencing can greatly aid in classification based on morphology and precise identification of fast evolving species of Trichoderma.
The mushroom Coriolusversicolor contains biologically active polysaccharides, most of which belong to the ${\beta}$ glucan group. Diverse physicochemical properties, due to different sources and isolated types of ${\beta}$-glucans, may induce distinct biological activities. Here, we examined the effects of ${\beta}$-glucan from Coriolusversicolor (CVG) on the scavenger receptor B1 (SR-B1) expression and the role of SR-B1 in CVG-induced phagocytosis regulation by using SR-B1-specific shRNA transfected cells. We also examined whether Dectin-1 and CK2 are involved in SR-B1 expression in CVG-treated cells. Our study results showed that CVG increased the SR-B1 expression via Dectin-1 and CK2 in macrophages. However, the inhibition of SR-B1 expression by shRNA did not completely eliminate the effect of CVG on the increase of phagocytosis suggesting that SR-B1 is not essential for CVG-stimulated phagocytosis. This study will contribute to identify CVG's mechanism of action and its use in the development of functional foods.

The diversity of the genus Megacollybia in Korea was examined based on morphological observation and analysis of molecular data. Currently, the genus is consisted of nine species with a global distribution. However, only M. platyphylla has been reported in the floral survey of Korea. During our re-evaluation of the taxonomic diversity of Megacollybia in Korea, six Megacollybia specimens collected in 2012 were identified based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences and morphology. Here, we report two Megacollybia species, M. clitocyboidea and M. marginata, as newly recorded species from Korea. The microscopic features of the two species are provided in this study. To our knowledge, this is the first phylogenetic analysis of Korean Megacollybia species.

In the present study, a phylogenetic analysis was undertaken based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA and partial ${\beta}$-tubulin gene sequence of the $Ganoderma$ species. The size of the ITS rDNA regions from different $Ganoderma$ species varied from 625 to 673 bp, and those of the partial ${\beta}$-tubulin gene sequence were 419 bp. Based on the results, a phylogenetic tree was prepared which revealed that Korean $Ganoderma$$lucidum$ strains belong in a single group along with a $G.$$lucidum$ strain from Bangladesh.
A $Mariannaea$ fungus was isolated during investigation of an elm tree infested with unidentified beetles. Based on morphological characteristics and molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacer rDNA sequence, the fungus was identified as $Mariannaea$$elegans$ var. $elegans$. Fungal growth was better on malt extract agar than on potato dextrose agar and oatmeal agar. Optimal temperature and pH for growth of the fungus were $30^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.0, respectively. The fungus was found to have the ability to produce extracellular enzymes such as amylase, ${\beta}$-glucosidase, cellulase, and protease. This is first report on $M.$$elegans$ var. $elegans$ in Korea.

Vitamin D contents in agricultural products and foods were quantified by high performance liquid chromomatography (HPLC) with a UV/Vis detector, using external standard methods. The results were confirmed with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). After homogenization, samples were hydrolyzed by direct alkali saponification. Thereafter, fat-soluble components were extracted with n-hexane containing 0.01% butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Vitamin D contents in cereals were found to be in the range of $1.882{\sim}4.856{\mu}g/100g$. Juda's ear and oak mushroom contained high amounts of vitamin D, at 363.85 and $199.42{\mu}g/100g$ of edible portion, respectively.
Whole-genome sequencing of the wood-rotting fungus, Flammulina fennae, was carried out to identify carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes). De novo genome assembly (31 kmer) of short reads by next-generation sequencing revealed a total genome length of 32,423,623 base pairs (39% GC). A total of 11,591 gene models in the assembled genome sequence of F. fennae were predicted by ab initio gene prediction using the AUGUSTUS tool. In a genome-wide comparison, 6,715 orthologous groups shared at least one gene with F. fennae and 10,667 (92%) of 11,591 genes for F. fennae proteins had orthologs among the Dikarya. Additionally, F. fennae contained 23 species-specific genes, of which 16 were paralogous. CAZyme identification and annotation revealed 513 CAZymes, including 82 auxiliary activities, 220 glycoside hydrolases, 85 glycosyltransferases, 20 polysaccharide lyases, 57 carbohydrate esterases, and 45 carbohydrate binding-modules in the F. fennae genome. The genome information of F. fennae increases the understanding of this basidiomycete fungus. CAZyme gene information will be useful for detailed studies of lignocellulosic biomass degradation for biotechnological and industrial applications.
