  • Remote sensing techniques using drone-based multispectral image were studied for fast and two-dimensional monitoring of algal blooms in the river. Drone is anticipated to be useful for algal bloom monitoring because of easy access to the field, high spatial resolution, and lowering atmospheric light scattering. In addition, application of multispectral sensors could make image processing and analysis procedures simple, fast, and standardized. Spectral indices derived from the active spectrum of photosynthetic pigments in terrestrial plants and phytoplankton were tested for estimating chlorophyll-a concentrations (Chl-a conc.) from drone-based multispectral image. Spectral indices containing the red-edge band showed high relationships with Chl-a conc. and especially, 3-band model (3BM) and normalized difference chlorophyll index (NDCI) were performed well (R2=0.86, RMSE=7.5). NDCI uses just two spectral bands, red and red-edge, and provides normalized values, so that data processing becomes simple and rapid. The 3BM which was tuned for accurate prediction of Chl-a conc. in productive water bodies adopts originally two spectral bands in the red-edge range, 720 and 760 nm, but here, the near-infrared band replaced the longer red-edge band because the multispectral sensor in this study had only one shorter red-edge band. This index is expected to predict more accurately Chl-a conc. using the sensor specialized with the red-edge range.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the imagebased atmospheric correction models using the data from Landsat Enhanced Thermal Mapper Plus (ETM+) that have quite similar spectral characteristics to the forthcoming Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT)-2 Multi-Spectral Camera (MSC), and the in-situ measured surface reflectance data during satellite overflight. The main advantage of this type of correction is that it does not require in-situ measurements during each satellite overflight. While substantial differences are present between Top-Of-the Atmosphere (TOA) reflectance and in-situ measurements, the results showed that Case 1 based on COST model gives most accurate results among three cases. The accuracy of Case 2 is very close to Case 1 and its values are smaller than in-situ data. No notable features appear between some bands in the Case 3 and in-situ data. It is expected from this study that if the current methods are applied to the IKONOS high resolution data, we will be able to develop the suitable atmospheric correction methods for MSC data.

  • In this study, practical use of TM (Thematic Mapper) data was evaluated by comparison of LANDSAT- 5 TM and MSS (Multispectral Scanner) data. The comparison of TM and MSS data was achieved by analyzing the result of landuse mapping of Incheon area, and in addition, the comparison of accuracy according to image enhancement method was made. From the results of this study, we found that TM data was more accurate by about 20% than MSS data in landuse mapping, and that smoothing was effective in image enhancement processing of TM data.

  • Recently, Gonzalez-Audicana et al. proposed the substitute wavelet intensity (SWI) method which provided a solution based on the intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) method for the fusing of panchromatic (PAN) and multispectral (MS) images. Although the spectral quality of the fused MS images is enhanced, this method is not efficient enough to quickly merge massive volumes of data from satellite. To overcome this problem, we introduce a new SWI method based on a fast IHS transform to implement efficiently as an alternative procedure. In addition, we show that the method is well applicable for fusing IKONOS PAN with MS images.

  • A methodology of the integrating the similar color circle search of the spectral data and segmentation of the height data is developed. The method is then applied to study areas, and the results by IKONOS, LIDAR and data fusion are verified with the ground truth, and examined in terms of the accuracy. Results show that with the data fusion the accuracy are improved by about 15% in most of the study areas. The methodology for the detection of individual tree stands by data fusion is explored, and the utility of combinatorial use of the spectral and the height information is demonstrated.

  • Collapse of an Antarctic ice shelf and its flow velocity changes has the potential to reduce the restraining stress to the seaward flow of the Antarctic Ice Sheet, which can cause sea level rising. In this study, variations in ice velocity from 2000 to 2017 for the Nansen Ice Shelf in East Antarctica that experienced a large-scale collapse in April 2016 were analyzed using Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) images. To extract ice velocity, image matching based on orientation correlation was applied to the image pairs of blue, green, red, near-infrared, panchromatic, and the first principal component image of the Landsat multispectral data, from which the results were combined. The Landsat multispectral image matching produced reliable ice velocities for at least 14% wider area on the Nansen Ice Shelf than for the case of using single band (i.e., panchromatic) image matching. The ice velocities derived from the Landsat multispectral image matching have the error of $2.1m\;a^{-1}$ compared to the in situ Global Positioning System (GPS) observation data. The region adjacent to the Drygalski Ice Tongue showed the fastest increase in ice velocity between 2000 and 2017. The ice velocity along the central flow line of the Nansen Ice Shelf was stable before 2010 (${\sim}228m\;a^{-1}$). In 2011-2012, when a rift began to develop near the ice front, the ice flow was accelerated (${\sim}255m\;a^{-1}$) but the velocity was only about 11% faster than 2010. Since 2014, the massive rift had been fully developed, and the ice velocity of the upper region of the rift slightly decreased (${\sim}225m\;a^{-1}$) and stabilized. This means that the development of the rift and the resulting collapse of the ice front had little effect on the ice velocity of the Nansen Ice Shelf.

  • Results from the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) will help interpret the data from the operational satellite system. However, a major problem exists because a follow-on experiment to ERBE is not planned until the late 1990`s. Meanwhile, it will be necessary to provide OLR estimates from the operational satellite system. Since 1973the outgoing long wave radiation(OLR) data have been obtained by the 10#m window radiance(AVHRR) estimation technique from he observation NOAA operational satellites. However, those data have not been universall if accepted because they are estimated from the radiance in but one narrow spectral regiou. However , this type of technique has not been exploited for use with data from the ]fIRS multispectral radiometer. Since the radiance data measured by HIRS contains more: information on atmospheric variables than the AVHRR, it is a potentially better instrument for operational estimates of the OLR In this study, results from model are better flux estimates than the AVHRR, The technique is then tested by comparing simultalleous AVHRR and HIRS OLR estimations with a radiation model flux calculation froml homogeneous atmospheric scenes at the regions of desert and subtropic ocean.

  • Hyperspectral data has a great advantage to classify various surface materials that are spectrally similar. In this study, we attempted to classify man-made materials in urban area using Hyperion data. Hyperion imagery of Seoul was initially processed to minimize radiometric distortions caused by sensor and atmosphere. Using color aerial photographs. we defined seven man-made surfaces (concrete, asphalt road. railroad, buildings, roof, soil, shadow) for the classification in Seoul. The hyperspectral data showed the potential to identify those manmade materials that were difficult to be classified by multispectral data. However. the classification of road and buildings was not quite satisfactory due to the relatively low spatial resolution of Hyperion image. Further, the low radiometric quality of Hyperion sensor was another limitation for the application in urban area.
