Distributed Estimation Using Non-regular Quantized Data

  • We consider a distributed estimation where many nodes remotely placed at known locations collect the measurements of the parameter of interest, quantize these measurements, and transmit the quantized data to a fusion node; this fusion node performs the parameter estimation. Noting that quantizers at nodes should operate in a non-regular framework where multiple codewords or quantization partitions can be mapped from a single measurement to improve the system performance, we propose a low-weight estimation algorithm that finds the most feasible combination of codewords. This combination is found by computing the weighted sum of the possible combinations whose weights are obtained by counting their occurrence in a learning process. Otherwise, tremendous complexity will be inevitable due to multiple codewords or partitions interpreted from non-regular quantized data. We conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides a statistically significant performance gain with low complexity as compared to typical estimation techniques.

On the Physical and Perceptual Precision of the Multi-point Control Method in HRTF Simulation (다점제어를 이용한 머리전달함수의 모의에 있어서의 물리적 모의정도와 청감상의 모의정도)

  • Sound localization can be controlled by simulating the transfer functions from sound source to listener's ears. Even by using this method. a good performance cannot be expected when a listener slightly moves from the position where the transfer functions were measured. We have already been proposed the multi-point control method to overcome the problem of the listener's small movement. In this method, the transfer functions are simulated at multiple points around the listner's ears so that the points forms an area which covers the small movement of the listener. In this paper. we investigated the effect of applying multi-point control method for the control of sound localization. Results show that multi-point control is effective to keep the perceptual error of the localized direction small when the listener moves up to 6 cm from the original position.

Fatigue Crack Localization Using Laser Nonlinear Wave Modulation Spectroscopy (LNWMS)

  • Nonlinear features of ultrasonic waves are more sensitive to the presence of a fatigue crack than their linear counterparts are. For this reason, the use of nonlinear ultrasonic techniques to detect a fatigue crack at its early stage has been widely investigated. Of the different proposed techniques, laser nonlinear wave modulation spectroscopy (LNWMS) is unique because a pulse laser is used to exert a single broadband input and a noncontact measurement can be performed. Broadband excitation causes a nonlinear source to exhibit modulation at multiple spectral peaks owing to interactions among various input frequency components. A feature called maximum sideband peak count difference (MSPCD), which is extracted from the spectral plot, measures the degree of crack-induced material nonlinearity. First, the ratios of spectral peaks whose amplitudes are above a moving threshold to the total number of peaks are computed for spectral signals obtained from the pristine and the current state of a target structure. Then, the difference of these ratios are computed as a function of the moving threshold. Finally, the MSPCD is defined as the maximum difference between these ratios. The basic premise is that the MSPCD will increase as the nonlinearity of the material increases. This technique has been used successfully for localizing fatigue cracks in metallic plates.

A leak detection and 3D source localization method on a plant piping system by using multiple cameras

  • To reduce the secondary damage caused by leakage accidents in plant piping systems, a constant surveillance system is necessary. To ensure leaks are promptly addressed, the surveillance system should be able to detect not only the leak itself, but also the location of the leak. Recently, research to develop new methods has been conducted using cameras to detect leakage and to estimate the location of leakage. However, existing methods solely estimate whether a leak exists or not, or only provide two-dimensional coordinates of the leakage location. In this paper, a method using multiple cameras to detect leakage and estimate the three-dimensional coordinates of the leakage location is presented. Leakage is detected by each camera using MADI(Moving Average Differential Image) and histogram analysis. The two-dimensional leakage location is estimated using the detected leakage area. The three-dimensional leakage location is subsequently estimated based on the two-dimensional leakage location. To achieve this, the coordinates (x, z) for the leakage are calculated for a horizontal section (XZ plane) in the monitoring area. Then, the y-coordinate of leakage is calculated using a vertical section from each camera. The method proposed in this paper could accurately estimate the three-dimensional location of a leak using multiple cameras.

Amplitude Panning Algorithm for Virtual Sound Source Rendering in the Multichannel Loudspeaker System (다채널 스피커 환경에서 가상 음원을 생성하기 위한 레벨 패닝 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, we proposes the virtual sound source panning algorithm in the multichannel system. Recently, High-definition (HD) and Ultrahigh-definition (UHD) video formats are accepted for the multimedia applications and they provide the high-quality resolution pixels and the wider view angle. The audio format also needs to generate the wider sound field and more immersive sound effects. However, the conventional stereo system cannot satisfy the desired sound quality in the latest multimedia system. Therefore, the various multichannel systems that can make more improved sound field generation are proposed. In the mutichannel system, the conventional panning algorithms have acoustic problems about directivity and timbre of the virtual sound source. To solve these problems in the arbitrary positioned multichannel loudspeaker system, we proposed the virtual sound source panning algorithm using multiple vectors base nonnegative amplitude panning gains. The proposed algorithm can be easily controlled by the gain control function to generate an accurate localization of the virtual sound source and also it is available for the both symmetric and asymmetric loudspeakers format. Its performance of sound localization is evaluated by subjective tests comparing with conventional amplitude panning algorithms, e.g. VBAP and MDAP, in the symmetric and asymmetric formats.

  • Most sensor array signal processing methods for multiple source localization require knowledge of the correct shape of array(the correct positions of sensors that consist array), because sensor position uncertainty can severely degrade the performance of array signal processing. In particular, it is assumed that the correct positions of the sensors are known, but the known positions may not represent the true sensor positions. Various algorithms have been proposed for 2-D sensor array shape calibration in far field environment. However, they are not available in near field. In this paper, 3-D sensor array shape calibration algorithm is proposed, which is available in near field.

Nonlinear Time Reversal Focusing and Detection of Fatigue Crack

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the detection and location of nonlinear scattering source due to the presence of fatigue crack in a laboratory specimen. The proposed technique is based on a combination of nonlinear elastic wave spectroscopy(NEWS) and time reversal(TR) focusing approach. In order to focus on the nonlinear scattering position due to the fatigue crack, we employed only one transmitting transducer and one receiving transducer, taking advantage of long duration of reception signal that includes multiple linear scattering such as mode conversion and boundary reflections. NEWS technique was then used as a pre-treatment of TR for spatial focusing of reemitted second harmonic signal. The robustness of this approach was demonstrated on a cracked specimen and the nonlinear TR focusing behavior is observed on the crack interface from which the second harmonic signal was originated.

Efficient distributed estimation based on non-regular quantized data

  • We consider parameter estimation in distributed systems in which measurements at local nodes are quantized in a non-regular manner, where multiple codewords are mapped into a single local measurement. For the system with non-regular quantization, to ensure a perfect independent encoding at local nodes, a local measurement can be encoded into a set of a great number of codewords which are transmitted to a fusion node where estimation is conducted with enormous computational cost due to the large cardinality of the sets. In this paper, we propose an efficient estimation technique that can handle the non-regular quantized data by efficiently finding the feasible combination of codewords without searching all of the possible combinations. We conduct experiments to show that the proposed estimation performs well with respect to previous novel techniques with a reasonable complexity.

Decoupled Location Parameter Estimation of 3-D Near-Field Sources in a Uniform Circular Array using the Rank Reduction Algorithm

  • An algorithm is presented for estimating the 3-D location (i.e., azimuth angle, elevation angle, and range) of multiple sources with a uniform circular array (UCA) consisting of an even number of sensors. Recently the rank reduction (RARE) algorithm for partly-calibrated sensor arrays was developed. This algorithm is applicable to sensor arrays consisting of several identically oriented and calibrated linear subarrays. Assuming that a UCA consists of M sensors, it can be divided into M/2 identical linear subarrays composed of two facing sensors. Based on the structure of the subarrays, the steering vectors are decomposed into two parts: range-independent 2-D direction-of-arrival (DOA) parameters, and range-relevant 3-D location parameters. Using this property we can estimate range-independent 2-D DOAs by using the RARE algorithm. Once the 2-D DOAs are available, range estimation can be obtained for each source by defining the 1-D MUSIC spectrum. Despite its low computational complexity, the proposed algorithm can provide an estimation performance almost comparable to that of the 3-D MUSIC benchmark estimator.

An Adjacency Effect in Auditory Distance and Loudness Judgments

  • This study investigated whether the adjacency principle. demonstrated in a perceived visual space, can be applied to auditory space. In order to demonstrate an auditory adjacency principle, multiple sound sources were varied in direction and distance in an acoustically absorbant space. Specifically, a NEAR sound source was located 10° to the left of the listener's midline at a distance of 2 meters; a FAR sound source was located 10° to the right at a distance of 5 meters. These sources served as perceptual reference points with respect to the localization of three test sounds, all at a distance of 3 meters. Two of three test sounds were directionally closer to the NEAR and FAR reference sounds, respectively. The other was between the reference sources directionally. The listener was asked to judge the perceived distances and the loudness of the three test sounds and the two reference sounds. The results indicated that the apparent distances of the test sounds were most determined by the disparity of distance between each test sound and the reference sound most directionally adjacent to it. Therefore, the findings offer evidence that the adjacency principle can be applied to the auditory space.
