Prognostic Relevance of Recurrent Sites of Gastric Cancer Treated With Curative Resection: A Single Center Retrospective Study

  • Purpose: Gastric cancer treated with curative resection exhibits several recurrence patterns. The peritoneum is the most common site of recurrence. Some reports have indicated different prognostic influences according to the recurrence sites in other cancers, such as esophageal and colorectal cancers. This study investigated whether the recurrence sites influenced the prognosis of patients with recurrent gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: The data of 115 patients who experienced tumor recurrence after curative gastrectomy were retrospectively reviewed. The sites of recurrence were divided into 4 groups: lymph node (LN), peritoneum, other single organs, and multiple lesions. Clinicopathological features were compared between the sites of recurrence. Prognosis after resection and recurrence were also compared. Results: The peritoneum was the primary site of recurrence in 38 patients (33%). The tumor differentiation and pathological stages were significantly different. Survival after surgery did not show a statistically significant difference (hazard ratio [HR] of LN: 1, peritoneum: 1.083, other single organs: 1.025, and multiple lesions: 1.058; P=1.00). Survival after recurrence was significantly different (HR of LN, 1; peritoneum, 2.164; other single organs, 1.092; multiple lesions, 1.554; P=0.01), and patients with peritoneal and multiple lesion recurrences had worse prognosis. Furthermore, peritoneal recurrence seemed to occur later than that at other sites; the median times to recurrence in LN, peritoneal, other single-organ, and multiple lesions were 265, 722, 372, and 325 days, respectively. Conclusions: The sites of gastric cancer recurrence may have different prognostic effects. Peritoneal recurrence may be less sensitive to chemotherapy and occur during the late phase of recurrence.

A Study on India's Traditional Embroidery, Mirror Work (인도의 전통자수 MIRROR WORK에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this research is to study India's traditional embroidery method, Mirror Work, and to evaluate the examples of contemporary costumes as well as the applications of art to clothing that have been influenced by this technique, in order to expand its usage for creation of a new fashion image. Research in the literature and application of works related to Mirror Work have demonstrated: First of all, as a traditional embroidery method that represents the folk art of India, Mirror Work displays unique methods used in different regions and the way that various methods and materials were combined by the use of mirrors, beads, and $appliqu{\acute{e}}$. Secondly, it was found that the presentation of Mirror Work in the $pr{\hat{e}}t$-a-porte collection is based on a traditional embroidery method using both developed materials and adapted methods to express traditional reproducibility, geometric simplicity, and aesthetic characteristics of complex decorations. Thirdly, new plasticity for art to wear clothing can be created through various methods aside from embroidery, for example by a technique of wrapping crochet laces and tapes around the mirror for decorative purposes. Based on these results it can be inferred that, from the perspective of multiple forms for decorations, Mirror Work shares multiple forms of personal aesthetic goals through the mirror's unique quality for expression and enhanced images of artistic decorative art. Also, the introduction of traditional materials and methods for today's folk art and traditional costumes can be the subject of unique aesthetic characteristics based on different perspectives of the recreation of tradition. Finally, it can further create a new plasticity within the globalization phenomena.

A Study on Ambiguous Expression for Efficacy of Medicinal Material - Focusing on 'Salchung[殺蟲]' - (의미가 다양한 본초 효능 표현에 대한 고찰 - 본초의 殺蟲 효능을 중심으로 -)

  • Objectives : Through this study, it would be confirmed that specific expression for efficacy of medicinal material has multiple meanings. And through the methodology to determine the multi meaning, it could be contributed to lighten ambiguous expressions for efficacy of medicinal material.Methods : The premise is that the efficacy and treatment target data are related to each other. Word cloud has been used analyzing the efficacy and treatment target data for medicinal materials. Then classic and modern documents were analyzed by the search.Results : Even though searching all related references as well as comparing the efficacy and treatment target data were done, some medicinal materials having 'Salchung[殺蟲]' as an efficacy are not expected to treat the disease associated with the parasite. Through the analysis of classic and modern documents, it was found that 'Salchung[殺蟲]' is not used only as a means of anthelmintic efficacy. But through the above analysis method some medicinal materials having 'Guchung[驅蟲]' as an efficacy are expected to treat the disease associated with the parasite, and 'Guchung[驅蟲]' seems to be almost used as a means of anthelmintic efficacy.Conclusions : If a certain expression for efficacy of medicinal material is used as a single meaning obviously, ambiguous expressions need to be clear. And if a certain expression for efficacy of medicinal material seems to have multiple meanings, the additional informations are to be supplemented for exact wording.

Synthesis of Multi-component Olivine by a Novel Mixed Transition Metal Oxalate Coprecipitation Method and Electrochemical Characterization

  • The multi-component olivine cathode material, $LiMn_{1/3}Fe_{1/3}Co_{1/3}PO_4$, was prepared via a novel coprecipitation method of the mixed transition metal oxalate, $Mn_{1/3}Fe_{1/3}Co_{1/3}(C_2O_4){\cdot}2H_2O$. The stoichiometric ratio and distribution of transition metals in the oxalate, therefore, in the olivine product, was affected sensitively by the environments in the coprecipitation process, while they are the important factors in determining the electrochemical property of electrode materials with multiple transition metals. The effect of the pH, atmosphere, temperature, and aging time was investigated thoroughly with respect to the atomic ratio of transition metals, phase purity, and morphology of the mixed transition metal oxalate. The electrochemical activity of each transition metal in the olivine synthesized through this method clearly was enhanced as indicated in the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge/discharge measurement. Three distinctive contributions from Mn, Fe, and Co redox couples were detected reversibly in multiple charge and discharge processes. The first discharge capacity at the C/5 rate was $140.5\;mAh\;g^{-1}$ with good cycle retention. The rate capability test showed that the high capacity still is retained even at the 4C and 6C rates with 102 and $81\;mAh\;g^{-1}$, respectively.

  • It is to use many plastic materials as living essential goods. But when the fire is happened, owing to noxious gases, many men should be injured. Therefore as the noxious gases are measured by open path FT-IR spectrometer as remote monitoring, the demage of men could be minimized. Such this system consists of a Fourier transform spectrometer and infrared lamp fitted to long length. The study was to do the quantitative analysis on CO, $NO_2$, HCl, HF gas by remote monitoring open path FT-IR spectrometer. And the method of it should use MLR (multiple linearity regression) method. As result, It was confirmed to be more than 0.95 as $R^2$ of MLR. And then Urethane and PVC of plastic materials selected was burned, the concentration of polluted gases were measured by remote monitoring method.

Significance of Some Proliferation Markers and Some Prognostic Factors in Patients with Multiple Myeloma and their Impact on the Patients' Survival

  • Background: Multiple myeloma (MM) is influenced by genetic and micro-environmental changes. Malignant plasma cells produce an abnormal monoclonal immunoglobulin, as well as cytokines, such as IL-10 and IL-6 which stimulate cells of the bone marrow microenvironment (BMM) and cause dysfunction and failure of many organs. B cell activating factor (BAFF), IL6, IL10 are known to influence the growth & survival of the malignant clone. Aim: The objectives of the present study were to investigate the circulating levels of BAFF, IL-10 and IL-6, correlate them with well-known parameters of disease activity in patients with MM, and to detect their impact on the patients' survival. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 89 newly diagnosed MM patients and seventy apparently healthy volunteers as a normal control group. BAFF, IL6, IL10 were measured by ELISA for both groups. Survival analysis was performed for all patients. Results: Studied markers were higher in the MM patients compared to the normal control subjects. Patients' survival was improved by high serum BAFF levels. Conclusions: High levels of BAFF were found to improve patients' survival. BAFF and IL-6 can be considered probable diagnostic markers for MM.

Long Wavelength Scattering Approximations for the Effective Elastic Parameters of Spherical Inclusion Problems (장파장 산란 근사를 이용한 구형 개재물 문제의 유효 탄성적 성질)

  • The effective elastic properties of materials containing spherical inclusions were calculated by the elastic wave scattering theory. In the formulation additional scattering fields by the presence of random multiple scatterers that affects the effective properties were found by the single scattering approximation. In calculating the scattering fields the ensemble average on the displacements and strains inside the scatterer was found from the static approximation at long wavelength limit. The displacements were assumed to be equal to the incident field, while the strains were calculated by Eshelby's equivalent inclusion principle on the single inclusion problem. Four different models were considered and they reflected different degrees of multiple scattering effects based on the approximation introduced in the process of embedding the inclusion in the matrix. The expressions for the effective elastic constants were given in each model, and their relations to the results obtained from other scattering theory and elasticity theory were discussed. The theoretical predictions were compared with experimental results on the epoxy matrix composites containing tungsten particles of different sizes and volume fractions

A model to characterize the effect of particle size of fly ash on the mechanical properties of concrete by the grey multiple linear regression

  • Fly ash has become an important component of concrete as supplementary cementitious material with the development of concrete technology. To make use of fly ash efficiently, four types of fly ash with particle size distributions that are in conformity with four functions, namely, S.Tsivilis, Andersen, Normal and F distribution, respectively, were prepared. The four particle size distributions as functions of the strength and pore structure of concrete were thereafter constructed and investigated. The results showed that the compressive and flexural strength of concrete with the fly ash that conforming to S.Tsivilis, Normal, F distribution increased by 5-10 MPa and 1-2 MPa, respectively, compared to the reference sample at 28 d. The pore structure of the concrete was improved, in which the total porosity of concrete decreased by 2-5% at 28 d. With regarding to the fly ash with Andersen distribution, it was however not conducive to the strength development of concrete. Regression model based on the grey multiple linear regression theory was proved to be efficient to predict the strength of concrete, according to the characteristic parameters of particle size and pore structure of the fly ash.

  • Multivalent interactions, which are characterized by the simultaneous binding of multiple ligands on multiple receptors, are prevalent in biological system. We have shown that it is able to make a supramolecular aggregate coated with multiple functional molecules fairly easily by simply mixing one building block. In this particular example, a mannose-coated object was able to agglutinate bacterial cells with cognate binding partners through multivalent interactions. This kind of strategy can be applied in developing materials that can selectively remove pathogens. Supramolecular assembly of this type should be very useful in exploring multivalent biological interactions.

Constitutive Model of Tendon Responses to Multiple Cyclic Demands(I) -Experimental Analysis-

  • The work reported here is an extensive study of tendon response to multiple cyclic tests including 3% constant peak strain level test (A-type test), 3% constant peak strain level test with two rest periods (B-type test), and 3∼4% different peak strain level test (C-type test). A sufficient number of specimens were tested at each type of the test to statistically evaluate many changes in response during testing and differences in response between each type of the test. In cyclic tests, there were decreses (relaxations) in the peak stresses and hysteresis, increases in the slack strains, and during lower peak strain level (3%) cyclic block after higher peak strain level (4%) cyclic block in the C-type tests. Considering the results of this study and those of the other study of multiple cyclic tests with rest periods by Hubbard and Chun, 1985, recovery phenomena during the rest periods occurred predominantly at the beginning of the rest periods. Consistently in both studies, the effects of rest periods were small and transient compared to the effects of the cyclic extensions. The recovery with cycles at lower peak strain level (3%) after higher peak strain level (4%) in the C-type test has not been previously documented. This recovery seems to be a natural phenomena in tissue behavior so that collagenous structures recover during periods of decreased demand.
