An Exact Algorithm for the vehicle scheduling problem with multiple depots and multiple vehicle types (복수차고 복수차중 차량 일정 문제의 최적 해법)

  • This vehicle scheduling problem with multiple depots and multiple vehicle types (VMM) is to determine the optimal vehicle routes to minimize the total travel costs. The object of this paper is to develope an exact algorithm for the VMM. In this paper the VMM is transformed into a mathematical model of the vehicle problem with multiple depots. Then an efficient branch and bound algorithm is developed to obtain an exact solution for this model. In order to enhance the efficiency, this algorithm emphasizes the follows; First, a heuristic algorithm is developed to get a good initial upper bound. Second, an primal-dual approach is used to solve subproblems which are called the quasi-assignment problem, formed by branching strategy is presented to reduce the number of the candidate subproblems.

A Vehicle Routing Problem with Double-Trip and Multiple Depots by using Modified Genetic Algorithm (수정 유전자 알고리듬을 이용한 중복방문, 다중차고 차량경로문제)

  • The main purpose of this study is to find out the optimal solution of the vehicle routing problem considering heterogeneous vehicle(s), double-trips, and multi depots. This study suggests a mathematical programming model with new numerical formula which considers the amount of delivery and sub-tour elimination and gives optimal solution by using OPL-STUDIO(ILOG). This study also suggests modified genetic algorithm which considers the improvement of the creation method for initial solution, application of demanding point, individual and last learning method in order to find excellent solution, survival probability of infeasible solution for allowance, and floating mutation rate for escaping from local solution. The suggested modified genetic algorithm is compared with optimal solution of the existing problems. We found the better solution rather than the existing genetic algorithm. The suggested modified genetic algorithm is tested by Eilon and Fisher data(Eilon 22, Eilon 23, Eilon 30, Eilon 33, and Fisher 10), respectively.

A Simulation Study for the Inventory Pooling Effect (재고풀링효과의 시뮬레이션 연구)

  • We analyzed the effect of inventory pooling on the system where multiple depot was used to replenish retailers and where inventories are kept only on the depots. Inventory pooling consists of inventory integration and inventory exchange. We used simulation for checking the cost saving effect of reducing the number of depot (Inventory Integration) for the case when inventories kept on every depots are commonly used for all retailers when certain depot have stock out for their retailer assigned to them (Inventory Exchange) with the constraint of service level. Simulation on wide range of parameter settings results show that cost saving effect from inventory integration diminishes when transportation cost between depot and retailers or stock out cost, or retailer number increases. The effect becomes stronger when the demands on retailers have bigger variance or average. Also the results show that the cost saving effect from inventory exchange becomes stronger on the same situation when inventory integration effect becomes stronger.

  • Urban transit operation corporations perform repetitive work to investigate the EMU, electric multiple unit, by some fixed maintenance cycle. The quality of maintenance work usually depends on workers' know-how. Though some information to support the maintenance work is digitalized and provided to workers, it is not great help to them because of its non systematic structure. The information includes drawings, manuals, work results, work history, fault history, etc. The maintenance workers want to access the information anytime anywhere, and make an effect to promote the efficiency of maintenance for EMU. But it is difficult to achieve that without some structured information system which is able to use in work area. So we develop maintenance information system for EMU for about 4 years from 2002 to 2005. In this paper we present the configuration and characteristics of this system, and the results of the evaluation test. We install the system in two depots, Changdong and Jichuk, belonged to SeoulMetro to evaluate its efficiency and estimate its economic benefits.

A Simulation Study for the Inventory Policy in the 2 Echelon System (시뮬레이션을 통한 2단계 재고시스템에서의 재고정책 비교연구)

  • We analyzed the effect of three different types of inventory systems for saving the total cost using simulation on the system where multiple depots and many retailers disperse on the limited area. Three types of inventory systems are single echelon system with inventory exchange and two-echelon system and the variant two-echelon system. Variant two echelon system is the two-echelon system where the inventory transshipmentsare allowed on every two stage inventory echelons. Inventories kept on every retailer are commonly used for all retailers when certain retailer has stock-out. And when all retailers are stock-out, inventories kept on every depot are commonly used for the retailers whose assigned depots are stock-out. These all three systems are simulated with the constraint of service level on wide range of parameter settings. Simulation results show that cost saving effect appear clear for single echelon system and two-echelon system when shortage cost portion and transportation cost portion becomes large respectively irrespective of depot number. Variant two echelon system seems to be superior to two other systems when transportationcost portion becomes very small. But this superiority is not proved in terms of statistics. So we may conclude that the variant two echelon system may be useless with the higher administrative efforts due to frequent inventory exchange. Also we note that the traditional two echelon system becomes inferior to two other systems in terms of statistics when service level becomes high or when demand variance becomes very large. And inventory integration effect that cost becomes saved when depot number decrease, diminishes when transportation cost or stock-out cost increases irrespective of inventory systems.

  • It is necessary to estimate the operating cost for constructing an urban railway system. The present study was thus carried out to develop an estimation function of the operating cost for a MRT(Medium-sized Rapid Transit) system. We selected seven independent variables that could influence the operating cost: the rolling stocks, the number of trains in operation, the length of the lines, the number of stations, the number of passengers per day, the frequency of train operation, and the number of depots. We performed a multiple regression using Excel. Three types of regression functions were thereupon developed. All of them proved to be appropriate after comparing the results of the estimated cost. It will therefore be possible to use one of these three types, depending on the assumptions of the independent variables.

Comparison of Dipogenic and Osteogenic Potentials of Visceral and Subcutaneous Adipose Stem Cells of Human (인체 피하지방과 내장지방에서 유래한 줄기세포의 지방분화 및 골분화 능력 차이)

  • Purpose: Adipose tissue contains a population of pluripotent stem cells capable of differentiating along multiple mesenchymal cell lineages. It is well known that fat depots from different part of our body shows different nature not only in morphological aspect but also physiologic aspect. The authors compared the adipogenic potentials and osteogenic potentials of adipose stem cells from different anatomical sites of human. Methods: After laparotomy by surgery team, the authors isolated these adipose stem cells successfully from 7 men with an average age of 58, and induced differentiation along adipogenic and osteogenic lineages in vitro. On the 14th day, cells cultured in adipogenic media differentiated into adipocytes in vitro, as evidenced by positive Oil Red O staining of lipid vacuoles. On the 21st day, cells cultured in osteogenic media differentiated into osteoblasts in vitro as demonstrated by Alizarin red staining of a calcified extracellular matrix. Results: After exposure to adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation medium, subcutaneous adipose stem cells were found to possess greater adipogenic and osteogenic potentials than cells isolated from visceral adipose tissues. Conclusion: This study indicates that adipogenic and osteogenic potentials of adipose stem cells vary by their anatomical sites, with subcutaneous adipose stem cells exhibiting higher adipogenic and osteogenic potential than those isolated from visceral fat.

A Study for Solving Multi-Depot Dial-a-Ride Problem Considering Soft Time Window (다수차고지와 예약시간 위반을 고려한 교통약자 차량 서비스에 대한 연구)

  • Dial-a-ride is the most widely available transit service for disabled persons or seniors in the United States and Europe. This paper studies a static dial-a-ride problem considering multiple depots, heterogeneous vehicles, and soft time windows. In this paper, we apply a heuristic based on clustering first-routing second(HCR) to a real-world large dial-a-ride problem from Maryland Transit Administration(MTA). MTA's real operation is compared with the results of developed heuristic for 24 cases. The objective function of the proposed model is to minimize the total cost composed of the service provider's cost and the customers' inconvenience cost. For the comparison, the objective function values of HCR do not include waiting cost, delay cost, and excess ride cost. The objective function values from HCR are better than those from MTA's operation for all cases. This result shows that our heuristic method can make the real operation better and more efficient.

A Development of Multi-Period Bus Scheduling Model (다시간대에 대한 버스 스케줄링 모형 개발)

  • The Purpose of this Paper is to develop a multi-period bus scheduling model, in which a decomposition technique is applied. In general a bus scheduling requires a vast amount of calculation. Thus, a bus scheduling is a very complicated problem even with a single depot and is almost unable to obtain the optimal solution theoretically with many depots. In this paper in order to simplify the problem, the whole operating hours of a day are partitioned into several time periods. In one period, the same headways are maintained. For one period, the bus scheduling is simple and the solution applying the FIFO(First-In, First-Out) Principle is the optimal. However, connection between Periods remains as another scheduling Problem with a reduced problem size. This paper suggests how to connect bus schedules of consecutive periods efficiently, minimizing the operating cost. Through case studies for multiple routes with a single depot, this decomposition technique is proved to be effective practically.

  • The Advanced countries including Japan, USA and European countries are adopting automatic system(e.g., auto-measurement using CCD camera) for measuring pantograph sliding plate and wheel abrasion to minimize manpower for E.M.U(Electric Multiple Unit) inspection and maintenance as part of management rationalization of railroad Corporation since late 1980's. In Korea, as part of scheme of business rationalization, automatic system for measuring pantograph sliding plate and wheel abrasion started to draw industry attention since late 1990s, and the system started to be installed in newly built depots of Korea Railroad Corporation since 2002. This study hopefully provides the base for realizing business rationalization and applying the advanced technology developed by Korea, the country of powerful IT basis, to overseas railroad organizations by examining automatic system for measuring pantograph sliding plate abrasion using existing CCD cameras produced domestically and in foreign countries to study cases(organizations in Korea) for improvement of measurement, management and inspection of pantograph sliding plate abrasion using CCD cameras with new cutting-edge technology; and by applying the study result to railroad organizations in metropolitan areas in Korea.
