Ancient monuments of Greek and Roman classical architecture usually consist of multi-drum columns that are constructed of stone blocks placed on top of each other. Several research studies deal with the seismic behaviour of such structures, since earthquakes are common causes of destruction of such monuments. This paper investigates the effect of multiple earthquakes on the seismic performance of multi-drum columns, through numerical simulations and parametric analyses. The Discrete Element Method and an appropriate contact model have been implemented in a specially developed software application that is able to efficiently perform the necessary simulations in two dimensions. Specifically, various strong ground excitations are used in series for the computation of the collective final deformation of multi-drum columns. In order to calculate this cumulative deformation for a series of ground motions, the individual deformation of the column for each excitation is computed and then used as initial conditions for the next earthquake excitation. Various multi-drum columns with different dimensions are also considered in the analyses in order to examine how the geometric characteristics of columns can affect their seismic sequence behaviour, in combination with the excitation frequency content.

M152, used for aircraft engine compressor cases, causes many problems in the cutting process due to its high hardness and high toughness. Characterized by a concave cylindrical center, aircraft engine compressor cases are thin but have multiple side holes to connect with internal parts. Thus, deformation occurs despite the jig sustaining the inside. The object of this study was to lessen the deformation arising from drilling by improving the drilling jig for aircraft engine compressor cases. To this end, an aircraft engine compressor case modeled with SolidWorks was analyzed with ANSYS under real conditions. Then, to secure reliability, the analyzed deformation was compared with the actual deformation. Based on the results, the effects of the improved drilling jig for aircraft engine compressor cases were verified.
Deformation measurement of large scale structures, such as the ground beds of high-rise buildings, tunnels, bridge, and railways, are important for insuring service quality and safety. The pose-relay videometrics method and displacement-relay videometrics method have already presented to measure the pose of non-intervisible objects and vertical subsidence of unstable areas, respectively. Both methods combine the cameras and cooperative markers to form the camera series networks. Based on these two networks, we propose two novel videometrics methods with closed-loop camera series network for deformation measurement of large scale structures. The closed-loop camera series network offers "closed-loop constraints" for the camera series network: the deformation of the reference points observed by different measurement stations is identical. The closed-loop constraints improve the measurement accuracy using camera series network. Furthermore, multiple closed-loops and the flexible combination of camera series network are introduced to facilitate more complex deformation measurement tasks. Simulated results show that the closed-loop constraints can enhance the measurement accuracy of camera series network effectively.

Dynamic stability of a rotary oscillating cantilever beam is presented in this study. Using the stretch deformation instead of the conventional axial deformation, three linear partial differential equations are derived from Hamilton's principle and transformed into dimensionless forms. Stability diagrams of the first order approximate solutions are obtained by using the multiple scale perturbation method. The stability diagrams show that relatively large unstable regions exist near the combination of the first chordwise bending natural frequency and the first stretch natural frequency. This result is verified by using the generalized -$\alpha$ method.

Thermal error compensation has been developed for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining center with moving heat sources. The thermal error in CNC machining center has an effect on machining accuracy more than the geometric error does. Thus, temperature distributions of a spindle unit have been analyzed numerically by a Finite Differential Method and experimentally by an infrared (IR) camera in this study. A multiple variable method has been derived to estimate the thermal deformation of the machine origin stably and effectively after measuring deformation and temperature data. The experimental results for a vertical machining center have shown that the thermal errors of the machine origins were reduced more than 30% by the developed method.

Recently, the concern for displacement-based design has been increased as a performance based design method in which the deformation capacity of structure becomes so important. In this paper, a process is presented to accurately evaluate the deformation capacity of multistory RC frame structure. In the calculation of drift of frame, the deformation of beam and column as well as the deformation of anchorage and joint are considered. From the comparison between previous test and calculation results, the usefulness of the process is verified. The proposed process is also applied to the multiple story RC frame buildings(5, 10, 15 stories) designed to have strong column-weak beam. The results showed that the deformation capacity of the buildings could be not properly evaluated when deformations of anchorage and joint were ignored.

The deformation and fracture behaviors of a bulk amorphous metal, Zr-based one (Zr$\_$41.2/Ti$\_$13.8/Cu$\_$12.5/Ni$\_$10/Be$\_$22.5/: Vitreloy), were investigated over a strain rate range (7x10$\^$-4/~4 s$\^$-1/). The uniaxial compression test and the indentation test using 3mm-diameter WC balls were carried out under quasi-static loading conditions. As a result, at the uniaxial compressive state, the fracture stress of the material was very high (~1,700MPa) and the elastic strain limit was about 2%. The fracture strength showed a strain rate independent behavior up to 4 s$\^$-1/. Using indentation tests, the plastic deformation behavior of the Zr-based BAM up to a large strain value of 15% could be achieved, even though it was the deformation under locally constrained condition. The Meyer hardness of the Zr-based BAM measured by static indentation tests was about 5 GPa and it revealed negligible strain hardening behavior. At indented sites, the plastic indentation occurred forming a crater and well-developed multiple shear bands were generated around it along the direction of 45 degree when the indentation load exceeded 7kN. With increasing indentation load, shear bands became dense. The fracture surface of the specimen after uniaxial compressive tests showed vein-like pattern, typical morphology of many BAMs.

The object of this thesis is an analytical study on flexural deformation of high strength concrete structures using reliability theory. Using the established experimental data that have been presented in various documents the stress-strain relationship curves of high strength(500kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$)models are proposed. Based on both methods of logarithm regression analysis and multiple regression analysis adopted in order to establish the relationships between design parameters, response random variables and flexural deformation analyzed using Monte Carlo simulation and Simpson composite formula. Additional random variables are introduced to incorporate both the confidence in the analytical accuracy of engineering mechanics associated with structural response quantities and the uncertainty in the construction quality control. The result is expected to accomodate other important design parameter of high strength concrete design in treating reliability theory that practicing engineers, structural engineering often face.
The strain rate sensitivity index, m, plays an important role in plastic deformation at elevated temperatures. It is affected by strain rate, temperature, and the microstructure of the material. The strain rate sensitivity index has been used as a constant in numerical analysis of plastic forming at a specified strain rate and temperature. However, the value of m varies as deformation proceeds at an elevated temperature and a certain strain rate. Thus, in this present study, the value of m has been characterized as a function of strain by multiple tensile jump tests for AZ31 magnesium alloy sheet, and the variation of m has been discussed in conjunction with the microstructural observations before and after deformation. The experimental results show that the variation of m is dependent on the temperature and strain rate. Grain growth with dynamic recrystallization also affects the variation of m.
