  • A named entity recognition method is used to improve the performance of information retrieval systems, question answering systems, machine translation systems and so on. The targets of the named entity recognition are usually PLOs (persons, locations and organizations). They are usually proper nouns or unregistered words, and traditional named entity recognizers use these characteristics to find out named entity candidates. The titles of books, movies and TV programs have different characteristics than PLO entities. They are sometimes multiple phrases, one sentence, or special characters. This makes it difficult to find the named entity candidates. In this paper we propose a method to quickly extract title named entities from news articles and automatically build a named entity dictionary for the titles. For the candidates identification, the word phrases enclosed with special symbols in a sentence are firstly extracted, and then verified by the SVM with using feature words and their distances. For the classification of the extracted title candidates, SVM is used with the mutual information of word contexts.

  • Valve internal leakage is caused by damage to the internal parts of the valve, resulting in accidents and shutdowns of the piping system. This study investigated the possibility of a real-time leak detection method using the acoustic emission (AE) signal generated from the piping system during the internal leakage of a butterfly valve. Datasets of raw time-domain AE signals were collected and postprocessed for each operation mode of the valve in a systematic manner to develop a data-driven model for the detection and classification of internal leakage, by applying machine learning algorithms. The aim of this study was to determine whether it is possible to treat leak detection as a classification problem by applying two classification algorithms: support vector machine (SVM) and convolutional neural network (CNN). The results showed different performances for the algorithms and datasets used. The SVM-based binary classification models, based on feature extraction of data, achieved an overall accuracy of 83% to 90%, while in the case of a multiple classification model, the accuracy was reduced to 66%. By contrast, the CNN-based classification model achieved an accuracy of 99.85%, which is superior to those of any other models based on the SVM algorithm. The results revealed that the SVM classification model requires effective feature extraction of the AE signals to improve the accuracy of multi-class classification. Moreover, the CNN-based classification can be a promising approach to detect both leakage and valve opening as long as the performance of the processor does not degrade.

  • Solar photovoltaic can provide electrical energy with only radiation, and its use is expanding rapidly as a new energy source. This study predicts the short and long-term PV power generation using actual converter output data of photovoltaic system. The prediction algorithm uses multiple linear regression, support vector machine (SVM), and deep learning such as deep neural network (DNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM). In addition, three models are used according to the input and output structure of the weather element. Long-term forecasts are made monthly, seasonally and annually, and short-term forecasts are made for 7 days. As a result, the deep learning network is better in prediction accuracy than multiple linear regression and SVM. In addition, LSTM, which is a better model for time series prediction than DNN, is somewhat superior in terms of prediction accuracy. The experiment results according to the input and output structure appear Model 2 has less error than Model 1, and Model 3 has less error than Model 2.

  • This paper proposes a statistical regression method for classifying pillars and vehicles in parking area using a single ultrasonic sensor. There are three types of information provided by the ultrasonic sensor: TOF, the peak and the width of a pulse, from which 67 different features are extracted through segmentation and data preprocessing. The classification using the multiple SVM and the multinomial logistic regression are applied to the set of extracted features, and has achieved the accuracy of 85% and 89.67%, respectively, over a set of real-world data. The experimental result proves that the proposed feature extraction and classification scheme is applicable to the object classification using an ultrasonic sensor.

  • In this paper, we propose a gesture recognition system to recognize motions using the shape information of MHI (Motion History Image). The system acquires MHI to provide information on motions from images with input and extracts the gradient images from such MHI for each X and Y coordinate. It extracts the shape information by applying the shape context to each gradient image and uses the extracted pattern information values as the feature values. It recognizes motions by learning and classifying the obtained feature values with a SVM (Support Vector Machine) classifier. The suggested system is able to recognize the motions for multiple people as well as to recognize the direction of movements by using the shape information of MHI. In addition, it shows a high ratio of recognition with a simple method to extract features.

  • Automatic Video Surveillance System (AVSS) has become important to computer vision researchers as crime has increased in the twenty-first century. As a new branch of AVSS, baggage detection has a wide area of security applications. Some of them are, detecting baggage in baggage restricted super shop, detecting unclaimed baggage in public space etc. However, in this paper, a detection & classification framework of baggage is proposed. Initially, background subtraction is performed instead of sliding window approach to speed up the system and HSI model is used to deal with different illumination conditions. Then, a model is introduced to overcome shadow effect. Then, occlusion of objects is detected using proposed mirroring algorithm to track individual objects. Extraction of rotational signal descriptor (SP-RSD-HOG) with support plane from Region of Interest (ROI) add rotation invariance nature in HOG. Finally, dynamic human body parameter setting approach enables the system to detect & classify single or multiple pieces of carried baggage even if some portions of human are absent. In baggage detection, a strong classifier is generated by boosting similarity measure based multi layer Support Vector Machine (SVM)s into HOG based SVM. This boosting technique has been used to deal with various texture patterns of baggage. Experimental results have discovered the system satisfactorily accurate and faster comparative to other alternatives.

  • This study aims at developing and applying a hybrid model to the wind power prediction (WPP). The hybrid model for a very-short-term WPP (VSTWPP) is achieved through analytical data, multiple linear regressions and least square methods (MLR&LS). The data used in our hybrid model are based on the historical records of wind power from an offshore region. In this model, the WPP is achieved in four steps: 1) transforming historical data into ratios; 2) predicting the wind power using the ratios; 3) predicting rectification ratios by the total wind power; 4) predicting the wind power using the proposed rectification method. The proposed method includes one-step and multi-step predictions. The WPP is tested by applying different models, such as the autoregressive moving average (ARMA), support vector machine (SVM), and artificial neural network (ANN). The results of all these models confirmed the validity of the proposed hybrid model in terms of error as well as its effectiveness. Furthermore, forecasting errors are compared to depict a highly variable WPP, and the correlations between the actual and predicted wind powers are shown. Simulations are carried out to definitely prove the feasibility and excellent performance of the proposed method for the VSTWPP versus that of the SVM, ANN and ARMA models.

  • In this paper, we present a wearable intelligent device based on multi-sensor for monitoring human activity. In order to recognize multiple activities, we developed activity recognition algorithms utilizing an image sensor and a 3-axis accelerometer sensor. We proposed a grid?based optical flow method and used a SVM classifier to analyze data acquired from multi-sensor. We used the direction and the magnitude of motion vectors extracted from the image sensor. We computed the correlation between axes and the magnitude of the FFT with data extracted from the 3-axis accelerometer sensor. In the experimental results, we showed that the accuracy of activity recognition based on the only image sensor, the only 3-axis accelerometer sensor, and the proposed multi-sensor method was 55.57%, 89.97%, and 89.97% respectively.

  • In this paper, we evaluated prediction accuracy of Euler angle spectrograph classification method using a convolutional neural networks (CNN) for hand gesture recognition in augmented reality (AR) cognitive rehabilitation system based on Leap Motion Controller (LMC). Hand gesture recognition methods using a conventional support vector machine (SVM) show 91.3% accuracy in multiple motions. In this paper, five hand gestures ("Promise", "Bunny", "Close", "Victory", and "Thumb") are selected and measured 100 times for testing the utility of spectral classification techniques. Validation results for the five hand gestures were able to be correctly predicted 100% of the time, indicating superior recognition accuracy than those of conventional SVM methods. The hand motion recognition using CNN meant to be applied more useful to AR cognitive rehabilitation training systems based on LMC than sign language recognition using SVM.

  • Working memory (WM), which plays a vital role in daily activities, is a memory system that temporarily stores and processes information when people are engaged in complex cognitive activities. The influence of music on WM has been widely studied. In this work, we conducted a series of n-back memory experiments with different task difficulties and multiple trials on 14 subjects under the condition of no music and Alpha wave leading music. The analysis of behavioral data show that the change of music condition has significant effect on the accuracy and time of memory reaction (p<0.01), both of which are improved after the stimulation of Alpha wave music. Behavioral results also suggest that short-term training has no significant impact on working memory. In the further analysis of electrophysiology (EEG) data recorded in the experiment, auto-regressive (AR) model is employed to extract features, after which an average classification accuracy of 82.9% is achieved with support vector machine (SVM) classifier in distinguishing between before and after WM enhancement. The above findings indicate that Alpha wave leading music can improve WM, and the combination of AR model and SVM classifier is effective in detecting the brain activity changes resulting from music stimulation.
