In order to resolve the energy efficiency in wireless sensor networks, a multihop transmission technique is utilized. However, multihop transmission in wireless sensor networks (WSN) has pros and cons. It reduces total energy consumption, while it may cause a severe decrease in network lifetime. To solve this problem, we suggest the so called strike and bargaining algorithm (SBA). The routing path is determined by wages of nodes. Each node negotiates its wage with their neighbor nodes and determine a reasonable value to reach a optimally balanced point. By analysis and simulations, we show SBA can achieve a near optimal solution.

In multihop cellular network environments, the mobility of nodes is a major obstacle to find a reliable routing path between a mobile node (MN) and the access node (AN). Therefore, in this paper, we propose a fast and reliable neighbor discovery protocol that enables the fast and reliable neighbor discovery by considering the node mobility in the multihop cellular network. The proposed neighbor discovery protocol inhibits the transmission of unnecessary control messages to quickly find a suitable neighbor node (NN) and performs a priority-based access control to transmit control messages without collision in the order of NN desirable to be selected. Simulation results show that the proposed neighbor discovery protocol can discover the NNs faster than the conventional scheme and select a more reliable relay node although the number of neighbor nodes increases and the node mobility increases.

Clustering wireless sensor network is an efficient way to reduce the energy consumption of individual nodes in a cluster. In clustering, multihop routing techniques increase the load of the Cluster head near the sink. This unbalanced load on the Cluster head increases its energy consumption, thereby Cluster heads die faster and create an energy hole problem. In this paper, we propose an Energy Balancing Cluster Head (EBCH) in wireless sensor network. At First, we balance the intra cluster load among the cluster heads, which results in nonuniform distribution of nodes over an unequal cluster size. The load received by the Cluster head in the cluster distributes their traffic towards direct and multihop transmission based on the load distribution ratio. Also, we balance the energy consumption among the cluster heads to design an optimum load distribution ratio. Simulation result shows that this approach guarantees to increase the network lifetime, thereby balancing cluster head energy.
In this paper, we propose the contribution-level-based opportunistic flooding in a wireless multihop network which achieves outstanding transmission efficiency and reliability. While the potential of the the predetermined relay node to fail in its receipt of broadcast packets is due to the inherent instability in wireless networks, our proposed flooding actually increases network reliability by applying the concept of opportunistic routing, whereby relay-node selection is dependent on the transmission result. Additionally, depending on the contribution level for the entire network, the proposed technique enhances transmission efficiency through priority adjustment and the removal of needless relay nodes. We use the NS-3 simulator to compare the proposed scheme with dominant pruning. The analysis results show the improved performance in both cases: by 35% compared with blind flooding from the perspective of the transmission efficiency, and by 20~70% compared to dominant pruning from the perspective of the reliability.

For large multihop networks, large time synchronization (TS) errors can accumulate with conventional methods, such as TPSN, RBS, and FTSP, since they need a large number of hops to cover the network. In this paper, a method combining Concurrent Cooperative Transmission (CCT) and Semi- Cooperative Spectrum Fusion (SCSF) is proposed to reduce the number of hops to cover the large network. In CCT, cooperating nodes transmit the same digitally encoded message in orthogonal channels simultaneously, so receivers can benefit from array and diversity gains. SCSF is an analog cooperative transmission method where different cooperators transmit correlated information simultaneously. The two methods are combined to create a new distributed method of network TS, called the Cooperative Analog and Digital (CANDI) TS protocol, which promises significantly lower network TS errors in multi-hop networks. CANDI and TPSN are compared in simulation for a line network.

Intra-session network coding has been proposed to improve throughput by simplifying scheduling of multi-hop wireless network and efficiency of packet transmission. Multi-rate transmission has been used in multihop wireless networks. An opportunistic routing with multirate shows throughput improvement compared with single rate. In this paper, we propose a method of throughput improvement in multi-hop wireless network by using multi-rate and intra-session network coding. We suggest a method to select an local optimal transmission rate at each node. The maximum throughput is evaluated by using linear programming (LP). To solve the LP, we use MATLAB and lp_solve IDE program. The performance evaluation results show that end-to-end throughput is improved by using multirate and intra-session network coding can achieve better throughput than opportunistic routing.
Since sensor networks consist of sensor nodes with limited energy resources, so efficient energy use of sensor nodes is very important in the design of sensor networks. Sensor nodes consume a lot of energy for data transmission. Clustering technique is used to efficiently use energy in data transmission. Recently, mobile sink techniques have been proposed to reduce the energy load concentrated on the cluster header near a sink node. The CMS(Cluster-based Mobile sink) technique minimizes the generation of control messages by creating a data transmission path while creating clusters, and supports the inter-cluster one-hop transmission. But, there is a case where there is no connectivity between neighbor clusters, it causes a problem of having a long hop data transmission path regardless of local distance. In this paper, we propose a SCBC(Strong connection balancing cluster) to support the path of the minimum number of hops. The proposed scheme minimizes the number of hops in the data transmission path and supports efficient use of energy in the cluster header. This also minimizes a number of hops in data transmission paths even when the sink moves and establishes a new path, and it supports the effect of extending the life cycle of the entire sensor network.

Sensors have limited resources in sensor networks, so efficient use of energy is important. Representative clustering methods, LEACH, LEACHC, TEEN generally use direct transmission methods from cluster headers to a sink node to pass collected data. If clusters are located at a long distance from the sink node, the cluster headers exhaust a lot of energy in order to transfer the data. As a consequence, the life of sensors is shorten and re-clustering is needed. In the process of clustering, sensor nodes consume some energy and the energy depletion of the cluster headers meet another energy exhaustion. A method of transferring data from cluster headers to the sink using neighbor clusters is needed for saving energy. In this paper, we propose a novel routing method using a multi-hop transmission method in cluster sensor networks. This method uses the topology matrix which presents cluster topology. One-hop routing and two-hop routing are proposed in order to increase the energy efficiency.

Over the last five years, relaying or multihop techniques have been intensively researched as means for potentially improving link performance of wireless networks. However, the data rates of relays are often limited because they cannot transmit and receive on the same frequency simultaneously. This limitation has come to the attention of researchers, and recently a number of relay techniques have been proposed specifically to improve the data efficiency of relaying protocols. This paper surveys transmission protocols that employ first single relays, then multiple relays and finally multiple antenna relays. A common feature of these techniques is that novel signal processing techniques are required in the relay network to support increased data rates. This paper presents results and discussion that highlight the advantages of these approaches.
