  • A multiblock grid generation has been applied to a Navier-Stokes design procedure of a axial-flow compressors. A multiblock structure simplifies the creation of structured H-grids about complex turbomachinery geometries and facilitate the creation of a grid in the tip flow region. The numerical algorithm adopts the combination of the algebraic and elliptic method to create the internal grids efficiently and quickly. The input module is made of the results of the preliminary design, i.e., flow-path, aerodynamic conditions along the spanwise direction, and the blade profile data. The final grids generated from each module of the system are used as the preprocessor for the performance prediction of the sectional blade, the blade-stacking process and the three-dimensional flow simulation inside the blade passage. Application to the blade design of the LP compressor was demonstrated to be very reliable and practical in support of design activities. This customized system are coupled strongly with the design procedure of the turbomachinery cascades using the Navier-Stokes technique.

The input module is made of the results of the preliminary design, i.e., flow-path, aerodynamic conditions along the spanwise direction, and the blade profile data. The final grids generated from each module of the system are used as the preprocessor for the performance prediction of the single row cascades and the flow simulation inside the multi staegd blade passage. Application to low pressure compressor of industrial gas turbine engines was demonstrated to be very reliable and practical in support of design activities.

  • Numerical study of three-dimensional turbulent flow in a forward curved centrifugal fan is presented. Standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates are used to consider the turbulent flow field and complex geometry. Finite Volume approach is adopted for discretization scheme and structured grid system is used to help convergence. Multiblock grid system is used for flow field and divided into five domains that are inlet, outlet, impeller, tip clearance and scroll. It is assumed that the flow field is steady state and incompressible. This numerical work is performed with commercial CFD-ACE code developed by CFD Research Corporation, and the results are compared wi th the experimental data

  • Since the previous cut-and-try design algorithm require much cost and time, it has recently been concerned the automatic design technique using the CFD and optimum design algorithm. In this study, the Navier-Stokes equations is solved to consider the more detail viscous flow informations of cascade interaction and O-H multiblock grid system is generated to impose an accurate boundary condition. The cubic-spline interpolation is applied to handle a relative motion of a rotor to the stator. To validate present procedure, the time averaged aerodynamic loads are compared with experiment and good agreement obtained. Once the N-S equations have been solved, the computed aerodynamic loads may be used to computed the sensitivities of the aerodynamic objective function. The Modified Method of feasible Direction(MMFD) is usef to compute the

  • An interactive mode of grid generation system has been developed for a Navier-Stokes design procedure of axial flow compressors. The present grid generator adopts the multiblock H-grid structure, which simplifies the creation of computational grids about complex turbomachinery geometries and facilitate the manipulation of multiple grid blocks for multirow flow fields. The numerical algorithm adopts the combination of the algebraic and elliptic method to create the internal grids efficiently and quickly. The system consists of four separated modules, which are linked together with a common graphical user interface. The system input is made of the results of the preliminary design. The final grids generated from each module of the system are used as the preprocessor for the performance prediction of the two-or three-dimensional flow simulation inside the blade passage. Application to the blade design of the LP compressor was demonstrated to be very reliable and practical in support of design activities. This customized system are coupled strongly with the design procedure of the turbomachinery cascades using the Navier-Stokes technique.

  • The present work solved 3D incompressible RANS equations on a rotating, multi-blocked grid system to efficiently analyze ducted marine propulsor with the interaction of propeller guidevane and annular duct. To handle the interface boundary between the guidevane and the propeller, a sliding multiblock technique based on the cubic spline interpolation was applied. To validate the present code, a turbine flow was simulated and the time-averaged pressure coefficients were compared with experiment. After the code validation, the flowfield around a ducted marine propeller with pre-swirl guidevane was simulated.

  • The present work solved 3D incompressible RANS equation on a rotating, non-orthogonal multi-blocked grid system to efficiently analyze ducted marine propulsor with rotor-stator interaction. To handle the interface boundary between a rotor and a stator maintaining the conservative property, the sliding multiblock technique using the cubic spline interpolation and the bilinear interpolation technique were applied. To validate present code, a turbine flow having rotor- stator interaction was simulated. Time averaged pressure coefficients were compared with experiments and good agreement was obtained. After the code validation, the flowfield around a single-stage ducted marine propulsor was simulated.

  • The numerical analysis of a waterjet propulsion system was performed to provide detail understanding of complicated flow phenomena including interactions of intake duct, rotor, stator, and contracted discharge nozzle. The incompressible RANS equations were solved on moving multiblocked grid system. To handle interface boundary between rotor and stator, the sliding multiblock method was applied. The numerical results were compared with experiments and good agreement was obtained. The complicated viscous flow features of the waterjet, such as secondary flow inside the intake duct, the recovery of axial flow by the role of the stator, and tip and hub vortex, etc. were well analyzed by the present simulation. The performance of thrust and torque was also predicted.

  • The flow analysis of the axial fan of rotary burner was performed by SIMPLE(Semi Implicit Method for Pressure Linked Equations) algorithm and finite volume mothod performed in the case of 3-D, incompressible, turbulent flow. In this study, the coordinate transformation was adapted for the complex geometry of axial fan, and the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and wall function method were used for analysis of turbulent flow. Multi-block grid system was used for flow field and divided into four domains such as the inlet, outlet, flow field of rotating vane, and tip clearance. Fan rotation was simulated by rotational motion using MRF(Multiple Rotating Reference Frame) in steady, incompressible state flow.

These numerical results are compared with the experimental data inside a rotor and at the fan outlet. Most important flow features are captured through this numerical approach. Finally details of flow field inside a fan are described and analyzed.
