  • AKARI's all-sky survey resolves the far-infrared emission in many thousands of nearby galaxies, providing essential local benchmarks against which the evolution of high-redshift populations can be measured. This review presents some recent results in the resolved galaxy populations, covering some well-known nearby targets, as well as samples from major legacy surveys such as the Herschel Reference Survey and the JCMT Nearby Galaxies Survey. This review also discusses the prospects for higher redshifts surveys, including strong gravitational lens clusters and the AKARI NEP field.

  • In this paper, the numerical simulation of the gas-liquid flow in a cylinder cyclone separator is performed to investigate the flow characteristics using a commercial software, FLUENT, which solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RaNS) equations. First, a single-phase flow with water in a gas-liquid cylinder cyclone(GLCC) separator is simulated and compared with the experiments(Farchi, 1990) and numerical simulations(Erdal, 1997). Then, the characteristics of the multi-phase flow for water-air, mud-only, and mud-air cases are discussed in the view point of the feasibilities for a mud handling system.

  • The article demonstrates a method of studying human health and nutrition by applying a multi-disciplinary approach and examines how humans developed and survived by adjusting to their environment. This process involves physiological, cultural and genetic adaptation both independently and interactively. This study postulates that a sound human health may be the result of balance between nutrition and environmental conditions. It is noted that there is a positive correlation between malaria and fava bean intake, and sickle cell anemia and cassava intake. It is also suggested that the difference in disease structure in soybean and non-soybean consumption cultures can be explained by an ecological approach to studying nutrition. This study further suggest that the relationship between nutrition and socio-cultural system. epidmiological study of nutrition and cultural environment nutrition and conceptual characteristics, nutrition and food intake pattern, nutrition and health sociological functions and the physioloical, cultural and genetic adaptation can all be stimulating research subjects to be studied form and ecological point of view. This article also includes the results from a series of ecological studies conducted by the author investigating the relationship between nutritional status of Korean breast-feeding mothers and the composition of the human milk and also the Vitamin D status of Korean and their lifestyle. • The prediction for tool life is one of the most important factors for increasing reliability, stability, and productivity of manufacturing system. This paper deals with a tool life prediction method in view of reliability assessment for cutting tools. In this study, flank wear was focused among multi-factors deciding the tool wear state. First, tool life was predicted by correlation between flank wear and cutting time, based on the extended Taylor tool life equation of turning, including parameters of cutting speed, feed rate, and cutting depth. Second, each of cutting conditions of end-milling was equivalently converted to apply ball end-mill data to the extended Taylor equation. The web-based prediction program for tool life was developed as one of reliability assessment programs for machine tools.

  • This paper gives a review of finite element model for the analysis of fastening as practical points of view. Different mechanical properties of plate-fastener systems are analyzed. Calculations of the system properties are described as well as the technique of their application in model. Analysis has been performed for calculating the load distribution in multi-joint and the results are compared using the several models. The effects of fastener-hole clearance on the load distribution in multifastener joints are presented. And the stress analysis method have been reviewed for failure analysis of mechanical joint of composite laminate.

  • The Intelligent Space(ISpace) provides challenging research fields for surveillance, human-computer interfacing, networked camera conferencing, industrial monitoring or service and training applications. ISpace is the space where many intelligent devices, such as computers and sensors, are distributed. According to the cooperation of many intelligent devices, the environment, it is very important that the system knows the location information to offer the useful services. In order to achieve these goals, we present a method for representing, tracking and human following by fusing distributed multiple vision systems in ISpace, with application to pedestrian tracking in a crowd. And the article presents the integration of color distributions into particle filtering. Particle filters provide a robust tracking framework under ambiguity conditions. We propose to track the moving objects by generating hypotheses not in the image plan but on the top-view reconstruction of the scene. Comparative results on real video sequences show the advantage of our method for multi-object tracking. Also, the method is applied to the intelligent environment and its performance is verified by the experiments.

  • In view of the rapid development of economics and technology, perilous meteorological and geological conditions often cause natural disasters and result in severe loss of lives and properties in Taiwan. To promote multi-hazard mitigation strategies in an integrated a, pp.oach, the National Science Council established a National Science and Technology Program for Disaster Mitigation in January 1998. This program emphasizes on the implementation of research results in the National Disaster Management System. This paper describes the earthquake loss estimation methodology that is currently developed in Taiwan. Topics of potential earth science hazards (PESH) and building vulnerability analysis are described in detail.

  • In these days, the pollution of marine environment near island at Korean coastal zone caused by the trash, human waste and livestocks excreta become series problem. One of the most economic and efficient way to prevent this pollution problem is to set up island circulating incineration system. In this paper, the results of feasibility study on the application of turtle boat hull form to the incinearting vessel has been summarized especially for the resistance and course keeping point of view.

  • Most structures are expected to deform beyond the limit of linearly elastic behavior when subjected to strong ground motion. Seismic evaluation of structure requires an estimation of the structural performance in terms of displacement demand imposed by earthquakes on the structure. Nonlinear response history analysis(NRHA) is the most rigorous procedure to compute seismic performance among various inelastic analysis methods. But nonlinear analysis procedures necessitate more practical and reliable tools for predicting seismic behavior of structures. This paper presents a nonlinear direct spectrum method(NDSM) to evaluate seismic performance of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural initial elastic period and yield strength from the pushover analysis, especially for MDF(multi degree of freedom) system. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the accuracy and reliability of this method from a point of view of various earthquakes and structure parameters.
