In order to improve the productivity of cold forging at low production cost, an integrated system's approach is necessary in handling the material preparation and the optimum process design, considering the forming machines, tooling, and operation including quality control. As the first step toward this approach, an expert system for multi-stage cold forging process design for fasteners with various head geometries is developed using Prolog language on IBM 486 PC. For effective representation of the complex part geometries, the system uses the multiple element input, and the forward inference scheme in determination of the initial billet size and intermediate forging steps. In order to determine intermediate steps, the basic empirical rules for extrusion, heading, and trimming were applied. The required forming loads and global strain distributions at each forging step were calculated and displayed on the PC monitor. The designed process sequence drawing can be obtained by AutoCAD. The developed system will be useful in reducing trial and error of design engineers in determining the diameter and height of the initial cylindrical billet from the final product geometry and the intermediate necessary sequences.

In this part, an implicit time dependent solution is presented for the Boltzmann transport equation discretized by the analytic coarse mesh finite difference method (ACMFD) over the spatial domain as well as the simplified P3 (SP3) for the angular variable. In the first part of this work we proposed a SP3-ACMFD approach to solve the static eigenvalue equations which provide the initial conditions for temp dependent equations. Having solved the 3D multi-group SP3-ACMFD static equations, an implicit approach is resorted to ensure stability of time steps. An exponential behavior is assumed in transverse integrated equations to establish a relationship between flux moments and currents. Also, analytic integration is benefited for the time-dependent solution of precursor concentration equations. Finally, a multi-channel one-phase thermal hydraulic model is coupled to the proposed methodology. Transient equations are then solved at each step using the GMRES technique. To show the sufficiency of proposed transient SP3-ACMFD approximation for a full core analysis, a comparison is made using transport peers as the reference. To further demonstrate superiority, results are compared with a 3D multi-group transient diffusion solver developed as a byproduct of this work. Outcomes confirm that the idea can be considered as an economic interim approach which is superior to the diffusion approximation, and comparable with transport in results.

An inverse finite element approach is employed for more capability to design the optimum blank shape from the desired final shape with small amount of expense and computation time For multi-stage sheet metal forming processes numerical analysis is expense difficult to carry out the to its complexities and convergence problem. It also requires lots of computation time. For the analysis of elliptic cup with large aspect ratio intermediate sliding constraint surfaces are difficult to describe. in this paper multi-stage finite element inverse analysis is applied to multi-stage elliptic cup drawing processes to calculate intermediate blank shapes and strain distributions in each stages. To describe intermediate sliding constraint surfaces an analytic scheme is introduced to deal with merged-arc type sliding surfaces.
Preliminary results are reported on ship detection using coherence images computed from cross-correlating images of multi-look-processed dual-polarization data (HH and HV) of ENVISAT ASAR. The traditional techniques of ship detection by radars such as CFAR (Constant False Alarm Rate) rely on the amplitude data, and therefore the detection tends to become difficult when the amplitudes of ships images are at similar level as the mean amplitude of surrounding sea clutter. The proposed method utilizes the property that the multi-look images of ships are correlated with each other. Because the inter-look images of sea surface are covered by uncorrelated speckle, cross-correlation of multi-look images yields the different degrees of coherence between the images and water. The polarimetric information of ships, land and intertidal zone are first compared based on the cross-correlation between HH and HV. In the next step, we examine the technique when the dual-polarization data are split into two multi-look Images.
Based on the multi-attribute utility theory (MAUT), we present a survey method to measure consumer preferences. The multi-attribute utility theory has been used to make decisions in OR/MS field; however, we show that the method can be effectively used to estimate the demand for new services by measuring individual level utility function. Because conjoint method has been widely used to measure consumer preferences for new products and services, we compare the pros and cons of two consumer preference survey methods. Further, we illustrate how swing weighing method can be effectively used to elicit customer preferences especially for new telecommunications services, Multi-attribute utility theory is a compositional approach for modeling customer preference, in which researchers calculate overall service utility by summing up the evaluation results for each attribute. On the contrary, conjoint method is a decompositional approach, which requires holistic evaluations for profiles. Partworth for each attribute is derived or estimated based on the evaluation, and finally consumer preferences for each profile are calculated. However, if the profiles are quite new and unfamiliar to the survey respondents, they will find it very difficult to accurately evaluate the profiles. We believe that the multi-attribute utility theory-based survey method is more appropriate than the conjoint method, because respondents only need to assess attribute level preferences and not holistic assessment. We chose swing weighting method among many weight assessment methods in multi-attribute utility theory, because it is designed to perform in a simple and fast manner. As illustrated in Clemen and Reilly (2001), to assess swing weights, the first step is to create the worst possible outcome as a benchmark by setting the worst level on each of the attributes. Then, each of the succeeding rows "swings" one of the attributes from worst to best. Upon constructing the swing table, respondents rank order the outcomes (rows). The next step is to rate the outcomes in which the rating for the benchmark is set to be 0 and the rating for the best outcome to be 100, and the ratings for other outcomes are determined in the ranges between 0 and 100. In calculating weight for each attribute, ratings are normalized by the total sum of all ratings. To demonstrate the applicability of the approach, we elicited and analyzed individual-level customer preference for new telecommunication services-WiBro and HSDPA. We began with a randomly selected 800 interviewees, and reduced them to 432 because other remaining ones were related to the people who did not show strong intention for subscription to new telecommunications services. For each combination of content and handset, number of responses which favored WiBro and HSDPA were counted, respectively. It was assumed that interviewee favors a specific service when expected utility is greater than that of competing service(s). Then, the market share of each service was calculated by normalizing the total number of responses which preferred each service. Holistic evaluation of new and unfamiliar service is a tough challenge for survey respondents. We have developed a simple and easy method to assess individual level preference by estimating weight of each attribute. Swing method was applied for this purpose. We believe that estimating individual level preference will be quite flexibly used to predict market performance of new services in many different business environments.

In recent years, mechanical systems such as high speed vehicles and railway trains moving on elastic beam structures have become a very important issue to consider. In this paper, a general approach, which can predict the dynamic behavior of a constrained mechanical system moving on a flexible beam structure, is proposed. Various supporting conditions for the foundation support are considered for the elastic beam structure. The elastic structure is assumed to be a non-uniform and linear Bernoulli-Euler beam with a proportional damping effect. Combined differential-algebraic equation of motion is derived using the multi-body dynamics theory and the finite element method. The proposed equations of motion can be solved numerically using the generalized coordinate partitioning method and predictor-corrector algorithm, which is an implicit multi-step integration method.

This paper proposes an evolutionary computation approach for automated design of mechanical structures especially in its early stage of design phases. Due to the known characteristics of the stage, the approach basically involves a synthetic design method with the composition of building blocks representing the elements of mechanical objects. In order for the building blocks to be more suitable for representation and evolution of mechanical structures, Elementary Cell Blocks (ECBs) are introduced as new building blocks. A new Darwinian evolution process for the new building blocks is also necessarily involved in the approach. We have demonstrated the implementation of the approach with the design of multi-step gear systems.

This paper addresses a welding task sequencing for robot arc welding process planning. Although welding task sequencing is an essential step in the welding process planning, it has not been considered through a systematic approach, but it depends rather on empirical knowledge. Thus, an effective task sequencing for robot arc welding is required. Welding perations can be classified by the number of welding robots. Genetic algorithms are applied to tackle those welding task sequencing problems. A genetic algorithm for traveling salesman problem (TSP) is utilized to determine welding task sequencing for a MultiWeldline-SingleLayer problem. Further, welding task sequencing for multiWeldline-MultiLayer welding is investigated and appropriate genetic algorithms are introduced. A random key genetic algorithm is also proposed to solve multi-robot welding sequencing : MultiWeldline with multi robots. Finally, the genetic algorithm are implemented for the welding task sequencing of three dimensional weld plate assemblies. Robot welding operations conforming to the algorithms are simulated in graphic detail using a robot simulation software IGRIP.
We need to flatten the brain cortex to smooth surface, sphere, or 2D plane in order to view the buried sulci. The rendered 3D surface of the segmented white matter and gray matter does not have the topology of a sphere due to the partial volume effect and segmentation error. A surface without correct topology may lead to incorrect interpretation of local structural relationships and prevent cortical unfolding. Although some algorithms try to correct topology, they require heavy computation and fail to follow the deep and narrow sulci. This paper proposes a method that corrects topology of the rendered surface fast, accurately, and automatically. The proposed method removes fractions beside the main surface, fills cavities in the inside of the main surface, and removes handles in the surface. The proposed method to remove handles has three-step approach. Step 1 performs smoothing operation on the rendered surface. In Step 2, vertices of sphere are gradually deformed to the smoothed surfaces and finally to the boundary of the segmented white matter and gray matter. The Step 2 uses multi-resolutional approach to prevent the deep sulci from geometrical intersection. In Step 3, 3D binary image is constructed from the deformed sphere of Step 2 and 3D surface is regenerated from the 3D binary image to remove intersection that may happen. The experimental results show that the topology is corrected while principle sulci and gyri are preserved and the computation amount is acceptable.
Using appropriate transformations, the differential equation for flexural free vibration of a cantilever bar with variably distributed mass and stiffness is reduced to a Bessel's equation or an ordinary differential equation with constant coefficients by selecting suitable expressions, such as power functions and exponential functions, for the distributions of stiffness and mass. The general solutions for flexural free vibration of one-step bar with variable cross-section are derived and used to obtain the frequency equation of multi-step cantilever bars. The new exact approach is presented which combines the transfer matrix method and closed form solutions of one step bars. Two numerical examples demonstrate that the calculated natural frequencies and mode shapes of a 27-storey building and a television transmission tower are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental data. It is also shown through the numerical examples that the selected expressions are suitable for describing the distributions of stiffness and mass of typical tall buildings and high-rise structures.
