Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) is developing a Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite I (KOMPSAT-I) which accommodates Electro-Optical Camera (EOC), Ocean Scanning Multi-spectral Imager (OSMI), and Space Physics Sensor (SPS). The satellite has the weight of about 500kg and will be operated on the 10:50 AM sun-synchronized orbit with the altitude of 685 km. The satellite will be launched in 1999 and its lifetime is expected to be over 3 years. The main mission of EOC is the cartography to provide the images from a remote earth view for the production of 1/25000-scale maps of KOREA. EOC collects 510 ~ 730 nm panchromatic imagery with the ground sample distance(GSD) of 6.6 m and the swath width of 17 km by push broom scanning. EOC also can scan $\pm$45 degree across the ground track using body pointing method. The primary mission of OSMI is worldwide ocean color monitoring for the study of biological oceanography. It will generate 6 band ocean color images with 800 km swath width and 1km GSD by whiskbroom scanning. OSMI is designed to provide on-orbit spectral band selectability in the spectral range from 400 nm to 900 nm through ground command. This flexibility in band selection can be used for various applications and will provide research opportunities to support the next generation sensor design. SPS consists of High Energy Particle Detector (HEPD) and ionosphere Measurement Sensor (IMS). HEPD has missions to characterize the low altitude high-energy Particle environment and to study the effects of radiation environment on microelectronics. IMS measures densities and temperature of electrons in the ionosphere and monitors the ionospheric irregularities at the KOMPSAT orbit.

The change detection algorithms, based on remotely sensed satellite imagery, can be applied to various applications, such as the hazard/disaster analysis and the land monitoring. However, unchanged areas sometimes detected as the changed areas due to various errors in relief displacements and noise pixels, included in the original multi-temporal dataset at the application of unsupervised change detection algorithm. In this research, the object-based changed detection for the high-spatial resolution satellite images is applied by using the IR-MAD (Iteratively Reweighted- Multivariate Alteration Detection), which is one of those representative change detection algorithms. In additionally, we tried to increase the accuracy of change detection results with using the additional information, based on the cross-sharpening method. In the experiment, we used the KOMPSAT-2 satellite sensor, and resulted in the object-based IR-MAD algorithm, representing higher changed detection accuracy than that by the pixel-based IR-MAD. Also, the object-based IR-MAD, focused on cross-sharpened images, increased in accuracy of changed detection, compared to the original object-based IR-MAD. Through these experiments, we could conclude that the land monitoring and the change detection with the high-spatial-resolution satellite imagery can be accomplished efficiency by using the object-based IR-MAD algorithm.
This paper reports the geolocation accuracy of KOMPSAT-3 imagery. KOMPSAT-3 was launched successfully on May 18, 2012 and has been released last March. In this paper, we have checked the geolocation accuracy of initial sensor model, precise sensor model and stereo-and multi-image model using four KOMPSAT-3 images covering the same area. The KOMPSAT-3 images without GCPs provided the geolocation accuracy of about 30m and the geocorrected KOMPSAT-3 images provided the geolocation accuracy of about 1m or less. KOMPSAT-3 stereo- and multi-images models yield threedimensional points with sub-meter accuracy in horizontal and vertical direction. Overall, KOMPSAT-3 showed much improved performance in terms of the geolocation accuracy over KOMPSAT-2. KOMPSAT-3 is expected to be able to replace foreign satellite data with sub-meter accuracy level for achieving accurate geometric information.

The KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT)-2 has a capability to provide a cross-track stereo imagery using two different orbits for generating various spatial information. However, in order to fully realize the potential of the KOMPSAT-2 stereo imagery in terms of mapping, various tests are necessary. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the possibility of mapping using the KOMPSAT-2 stereo imagery. For this, digital plotting was conducted based on the stereoscopic images. Also the Digital Elevation Model(DEM) and an ortho-image were generated using digital plotting results. An accuracy of digital plotting, DEM, and ortho-image were evaluated by comparing with the existing data. Consequently, we found that horizontal and vertical error of the modeling results based on the Rational Polynomial Coefficient(RPC) was less than 1.5 meters compared with the Global Positioning System(GPS) survey results. The maximum difference of vertical direction between the plotted results in this study and the existing digital map on the scale of 1/5,000 was more than 5 meters according as the topographical characteristics. Although there were some irregular parallax on the images, we realized that it was possible to interpret and plot at least seventy percent of the layer which was required the digital map on the scale of 1/5,000. Also an accuracy of DEM, which was generated based on the digital plotting, was compared with the existing LiDAR DEM. We found that the ortho-images, which were generated using the extracted DEM in this study, sufficiently satisfied with the requirement of the geometric accuracy for an ortho-image map on the scale of 1/5,000.
Using stereo images with ephemeris data from the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-1 electro-optical camera (KOMPSAT-1 EOC), we performed geometric modeling for three-dimensional (3-D) positioning and evaluated its accuracy. In the geometric modeling procedures, we used ephemeris data included in the image header file to calculate the orbital parameters, sensor attitudes, and satellite position. An inconsistency between the time information of the ephemeris data and that of the center of the image frame was found, which caused a significant offset in satellite position. This time inconsistency was successfully adjusted. We modeled the actual satellite positions of the left and right images using only two ground control points and then achieved 3-D positioning using the KOMPSAT-1 EOC stereo images. The results show that the positioning accuracy was about 12-17 m root mean square error (RMSE) when 6.6 m resolution EOC stereo images were used along with the ephemeris data and only two ground control points (GCPs). If more accurate ephemeris data are provided in the near future, then a more accurate 3-D positioning will also be realized using only the EOC stereo images with ephemeris data and without the need for any GCPs.

The rational polynomial coefficients (RPC) model is a generalized sensor model that is used as an alternative solution for the physical sensor model for IKONOS of the Space Imaging. As the number of sensors increases along with greater complexity, and the standard sensor model is needed, the applicability of the RPC model is increasing. The RPC model has the advantages in being able to substitute for all sensor models, such as the projective, the linear pushbroom and the SAR. This report aimed to generate a RPC model from the physical sensor model of the KOMPSAT-1(Korean Multi-Purpose Satellite) and aerial photography. The KOMPSAT-1 collects 510~730 nm panchromatic imagery with a ground sample distance (GSD) of 6.6 m and a swath width of 17 km by pushbroom scanning. The least square solution was used to estimate the RPC. In addition, data normalization and regularization were applied to improve the accuracy and minimize noise. This study found that the RPC model is suitable for both KOMPSAT-1 and aerial photography.
The first Korean remote sensing satellite, Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT-1), is going to be launched in 1999. This will carry a 7m resolution Electro-Optical Camera (EOC) for earth observation. The primary mission of the KOMPSAT-1 is to acquire stereo imagery over the Korean peninsular for the generation of 1:25,000 cartographic maps. For this mission, research is being carried out to assess the possibilities of automated or semi-automated mapping of EOC data and to develop, if necessary, such enabling tools. This paper discusses the issue of automated DEM generation from EOC data and identifies some important aspects in developing a for DEM generation system from EOC data. This paper also presents the current status of the development work for such a system. The development work has focused on sensor modelling, stereo matching and DEM interpolation techniques. The performance of the system is shown with a SPOT stereo pair. A DEM generated from a commercial software is also presented for comparison. The paper concludes that the proposed system creates preferable results to the commercial software and suggests future developments for successful generation of DEM for EOC data.
Remote sensing is the science and art of obtaining information about an object, area or phenomenon through the analysis of data acquired by a device that is not in contact with the object, area, or phenomenon under investigation./sup 1)/ EOC (Electro -Optical Camera) sensor loaded on the KOMPSAT-1 (Korea Multi- Purpose Satellite-1) performs the earth remote sensing operation. EOC can get high-resolution images of ground distance 6.6m during photographing; it is possible to get a tilt image by tilting satellite body up to 45 degrees at maximum. Accordingly, the device developed in this study enables to obtain images by photographing one pair of tilt image for the same point from two different planes. KOMPSAT-1 aims to obtain a Korean map with a scale of 1:25,000 with high resolution. The KOMPSAT-1 developed automated feature extraction system based on stereo satellite image. It overcomes the limitations of sensor and difficulties associated with preprocessing quite effectively. In case of using 6, 7 and 9 ground control points, which are evenly spread in image, with 95% of reliability for horizontal and vertical position, 3-dimensional positioning was available with accuracy of 6.0752m and 9.8274m. Therefore, less than l0m of design accuracy in KOMPSAT-1 was achieved. Also the ground position error of ortho-image, with reliability of 95%, is 17.568m. And elevation error showing 36.82m was enhanced. The reason why elevation accuracy was not good compared with the positioning accuracy used stereo image was analyzed as a problem of image matching system. Ortho-image system is advantageous if accurate altitude and production of digital elevation model are desired. The Korean map drawn on a scale of 1: 25,000 by using the new technique of KOMPSAT-1 EOC image adopted in the present study produces accurate result compared to existing mapping techniques involving high costs with less efficiency.
The ultimate goal of satellite development is to use information obtained from satellites. Therefore, national-levelsatellite development program should include not only hardware development, but also infrastructure establishment and application technology development for information utilization. Until now, Korea has developed various satellites and has been very useful in weather and maritime surveillance as well as various disasters. In particular, KOMPSAT (Korea Multi-purpose Satellite) images have been used extensively in agriculture, forestry and marine fields based on high spatial resolution, and has been widely used in research related to precision mapping and change detection. This special issue aims to introduce a variety of recent studies conducted using KOMPSAT optical and SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images and to disseminate related satellite image application technologies to the public sector.
The massive green tide occurred every summer in the Yellow Sea since 2008, and many studies are being actively conducted to estimate the coverage of green tide through analysis of satellite imagery. However, there is no satellite images selection criterion for accurate coverage calculation of green tide. Therefore, this study aimed to find a suitable satellite image from for the comparison of the green tide coverage according to the spatial resolution of satellite image. In this study, Landsat ETM+, MODIS and GOCI images were used to coverage estimation and its spatial resolution is 30, 250 and 500 m, respectively. Green tide pixels were classified based on the NDVI algorithm, the difference of the green tide coverage was compared with threshold value. In addition, we estimate the proportion of the green tide in one pixel through the Linear Spectral Unmixing (LSU) method, and the effect of the difference of green tide ratio on the coverage calculation were evaluated. The result of green tide coverage from the calculation of the NDVI value, coverage of green tide usually overestimate with decreasing spatial resolution, maximum difference shows 1.5 times. In addition, most of the pixels were included in the group with less than 0.1 (10%) LSU value, and above 0.5 (50%) LSU value accounted for about 2% in all of three images. Even though classified as green tide from the NDVI result, it is considered to be overestimated because it is regarded as the same coverage even if green tide is not 100% filled in one pixel. Mixed-pixel problem seems to be more severe with spatial resolution decreases.
