In this paper, exact closed-form expressions for outage probability and bit error probability (BEP) are presented for multi-hop decode-and-forward (DF) relaying schemes in conjunction with cooperative diversity, in which selection combining technique is employed at each node. We have shown that the proposed protocol offers remarkable diversity advantage over direct transmission as well as the conventional DF relaying schemes with the same combining technique. We then investigate the system performance when different diversity schemes are employed. It has been observed that the system performance loss due to selection combining relative to maximal ratio combining is not significant. Simulations are performed to confirm our theoretical analysis.

In oceanic flight routes, HF radio and satellite data links have weather restrictions, long propagation delay and low data throughput. In this paper, we propose oceanic aeronautical communications scheme in the VHF band based on ad-hoc communication. The proposed scheme organizes autonomously a multi-hop network that is divided into multiple local network using aircraft to fly long-distance communication and supports a hybrid type of multiple access, which consists of random access and TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) scheme. In addition, several algorithms to apply spatial reuse of transmission to multi-hop long range communication environments have been proposed. The proposed system proves performance improvement on delay time as an effective solution to communicate end-to-end on the oceanic flight routes and strengthens the reliability of oceanic aeronautical communication.
We evaluate the link-level performance of cooperative multi-hop relaying networks with an maximum distance separable (MDS) code. The effect of the code on the link-level performance at the destination is investigated in terms of the outage probability and the spectral efficiency. Assuming a simple topology, we construct an absorbing Markov chain. Numerical results indicate that significant improvement can be achieved by incorporating an MDS code. MDS codes successfully facilitate recovery of the message block at a relaying node due to powerful error-correcting capability, so that it can reduce the outage probability. Furthermore, we evaluate the average number of hops where the message block can be delivered.
Multi-hop relay networks have been widely considered as a promising solution to extend the coverage area and to reduce the deployment cost by deploying the relay stations (RSs) in mobile communication systems. Suitable deployment for the RSs is one of the most important features of the demand nodes (DNs) to obtain a high data transmission rate in such systems. Considering a tradeoff among the network throughput, the deployment budget, and the overall coverage of the systems, efficient RS deployment schemes and corresponding algorithms must be developed and designed. A novel cluster-based RS deployment scheme is proposed in this paper to select the appropriate deployment locations for the relay stations from the candidate positions. To make an ideal cluster distribution, the distances between the DNs are calculated when deploying the RSs. We take into account the traffic demands and adopt a uniform cluster concept to reduce the data transmission distances of the DNs. On the basis of the different candidate positions, the proposed scheme makes an adaptive decision for selecting the deployment sites of the RSs. A better network throughput and coverage ratio can be obtained by balancing the network load among the clusters. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the previously known schemes in terms of the network throughput and the coverage ratio. Additionally, a suitable deployment budget can be implemented in multi-hop relay networks.

In this paper, we analyze the active RFID systems ISO/IEC 18000-7 and ISO/IEC 18000-4. In order to improve the coverage in sensor networks, which consist active RFID tag, we propose RFID multi-hop relay system using active RFID relay tag. To compare the performance between the existing ISO/IEC 18000-7 system and the proposed RFID multi-hop relay system, we introduce new system efficiency measure and sensitivity-based measure of achieved coverage. Also, we analyze the performance of the proposed system and compare it with that of the existing system through MCL (Minimum Coupling Loss) analysis and SLS (System Level Simulation) analysis.

Vehicular communication is one of main convergence technologies which combines information and communication technology (ICT) with vehicle and road industries. In general, vehicular communication adopts IEEE 802.11p standard which is commonly referred as wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE). In this paper, we investigate a multi-hop communication scheme for IEEE 802.11p based communication systems which support both vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. First, we briefly overview the performance of IEEE 802.11p based communication systems. Then, a multi-hop communication scheme is introduced for both broadcast and unicast. The performance of proposed scheme is presented via experimental measurements.

In this paper, a WiMedia Distributed-MAC (D-MAC) protocol is adopted for development of a seamless N-screen wireless service in Indoor and Ship Area Networks. Furthermore, to provide the OSMU (One Source Multi Use) N-screen service through P2P streaming in the seamless D-MAC protocol, a ATMT (Asynchronous Traffic Multi-hop Transmission) technology is proposed and analyzed. In this system, a WiMedia ATMT D-MAC bridge transmits control and managing information to various sensors and instruments, from a central integrated ship area network station. For this technology, a time slot allocation scheme for WiMedia asynchronous traffic and a multi-hop resource reservation scheme are combined to evaluate the performance of each scheme. From simulation results, the proposed ATMT scheme enhances performances in viewpoints of N-screen asynchronous data latency and throughput, compared to the conventional WiMedia D-MAC system.

LED is just a semiconductor which can produce light. Currently, there are active research works on LED lighting technologies according to the growth of energy-saving environmental industry. Especially, LED communication is one of the active research works in these fields. In this paper, we design a LED communication-based multi-hop transmission wireless network system. The designed system consists of a transmission circuit system(transmitter) using LED and a receiving circuit system(receiver) using PD(photo detector) and OP-Amp, and relay system which can support multi-hop wireless network service with PD, OP-Amp, and LED, respectively. The experiments for the designed system are performed as follows. One computer is connected at the end of transmitter and receiver, respectively. There are two relays between transmitter and receiver, and text files are transmitted continuously by using text transmission programming. In this experiment, we test the performance with various baud rates, transmission ranges.

In this paper, we propose a generalized processor sharing - dynamic resource allocation (GPS-DRA) scheme which allocates the required amount of resources to each hop dynamically in cellular-based multi-hop systems. In the hybrid-distributed system considered in this paper, a central controller such as a base station (BS) should allocate resources properly to each hop. However, due to changing channel condition with time, it is difficult to allocate as much amount of resources as each hop needs for transmission. GPS-DRA scheme allocates the required amount of resources dynamically to each hop based on the amount of resources used in previous frames by each hop. The amount of control overhead generated by GPS-DRA scheme can be very small because a central controller doesn't need to collect all link information for resource allocation. Our simulation results show that channel utilization increased about 16% and cell capacity increased about 65% compared to those of fixed resource allocation (FRA) scheme.

Vehicular cloud computing is a new emerging technology that can provide drivers with cloud services to enable various vehicular applications. A vehicular cloud is defined as a set of vehicles that share their own resources. Vehicles should collaborate with each other to construct vehicular clouds through vehicle-to-vehicle communications. Since collaborating vehicles to construct the vehicular cloud have different speeds, directions and locations respectively, the vehicular cloud is constructed in multi-hop communication range. Due to intermittent wireless connectivity and low density of vehicles with the limited resources, the construction of vehicular cloud with multi-hop communications has become challenging in vehicular environments in terms of the service success ratio, the service delay, and the transmitted packet number. Thus, we propose a multi-hop vehicular cloud construction protocol that increases the service success ratio and decreases the service delay and the transmitted packet number. The proposed protocol uses a connection time-based intermediate vehicle selection scheme to reduce the cloud failure probability of multi-hop vehicular cloud. Simulation results conducted in various environments verify that the proposed protocol achieves better performance than the existing protocol.
