Wavelet Thresholding Techniques to Support Multi-Scale Decomposition for Financial Forecasting Systems

  • Detecting the features of significant patterns from their own historical data is so much crucial to good performance specially in time-series forecasting. Recently, a new data filtering method (or multi-scale decomposition) such as wavelet analysis is considered more useful for handling the time-series that contain strong quasi-cyclical components than other methods. The reason is that wavelet analysis theoretically makes much better local information according to different time intervals from the filtered data. Wavelets can process information effectively at different scales. This implies inherent support for multiresolution analysis, which correlates with time series that exhibit self-similar behavior across different time scales. The specific local properties of wavelets can for example be particularly useful to describe signals with sharp spiky, discontinuous or fractal structure in financial markets based on chaos theory and also allows the removal of noise-dependent high frequencies, while conserving the signal bearing high frequency terms of the signal. To data, the existing studies related to wavelet analysis are increasingly being applied to many different fields. In this study, we focus on several wavelet thresholding criteria or techniques to support multi-signal decomposition methods for financial time series forecasting and apply to forecast Korean Won / U.S. Dollar currency market as a case study. One of the most important problems that has to be solved with the application of the filtering is the correct choice of the filter types and the filter parameters. If the threshold is too small or too large then the wavelet shrinkage estimator will tend to overfit or underfit the data. It is often selected arbitrarily or by adopting a certain theoretical or statistical criteria. Recently, new and versatile techniques have been introduced related to that problem. Our study is to analyze thresholding or filtering methods based on wavelet analysis that use multi-signal decomposition algorithms within the neural network architectures specially in complex financial markets. Secondly, through the comparison with different filtering techniques results we introduce the present different filtering criteria of wavelet analysis to support the neural network learning optimization and analyze the critical issues related to the optimal filter design problems in wavelet analysis. That is, those issues include finding the optimal filter parameter to extract significant input features for the forecasting model. Finally, from existing theory or experimental viewpoint concerning the criteria of wavelets thresholding parameters we propose the design of the optimal wavelet for representing a given signal useful in forecasting models, specially a well known neural network models.

  • The impact of adding additional Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) criteria is demonstrated because current research shows MCDA for flood damage has been applied using only a few criteria but for better results the MCDA approach needs to apply more criteria for evaluating the alternatives. By adding additional criteria into MCDA, the capability to make the best alternatives more diverse and show the decision maker more differences in the scores of the alternatives to allow the decision maker to discriminate is significantly improved. The target region for a demonstration application of the methodology was the Suyoung River Basin in Korea. The 1991 Gladys flood event and five different return periods were used as a case study to demonstrate the proposed methodology of evaluation of various flood damage reduction alternatives.

  • The occurrence of ductile fracture is the working limit of many metal forming processes. It is necessary to predict the criteria and to apply the condition in a process design. Over the years. the way for clarifying conditions have been studied and presented. However such a way needs lots of experiments and analysis. In this study, in order to determine the critical damage value of a used material Cu 4N, it was performed a tensile test and FEM analysis by using DEFORM 2D. For applying the obtained critical damage value it was also performed a upsetting test by using DEFORM 2D. The way of determining a critical damage value which is presented in this study will make possible to find easily it which is one of the working limit factor. And the way of determining a critical damage value will make possible to find in multi-pass drawing process.

Multi-Criteria Decision Making Based Logistics Brokerage Agents (다기준 의사결정 기반의 물류중개 에이전트)

  • In this paper we deal with the logistics brokerage process in which a logistics agent intermediates between vehicle owners and shippers for matching empty vehicles and freights. Based on the Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methodology, the proposed agent system matches the most preferred empty vehicle to the shipper and the most preferred freight to the vehicle owner. In the proposed agent system, an MCDM based sensitivity analysis is also used for supporting decision makers under negotiations. Among various MCDM methodologies, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is utilized in this paper. Although AHP is one of the most popular MCDM methodologies, AHP needs a number of pair-wise comparisons for assessing alternatives and hence may give excessive decision making burden to the decision makers. In this paper, in order to reduce the decision making burden, a preference function based estimation method is proposed. We can expect that the MCDM based logistics brokerage agent can be used as an efficient and effective tool for e-logistics marketplaces on the internet.

Plasticity Model for Directional Nonlocal Crack Damage of Concrete (콘크리트의 방향적 비국소 균열 손상을 위한 소성모델)

  • To describe the effect of the numerous and various oriented microcracks on the compressive and tensile concrete behaviors, the directional nonlocality is defined. The plasticity model using multiple failure criteria is developed for RC planar members in tension-compression. The crack damages are defined in the pre-determined reference orientations, and then the total crack damage is calculated by integrating multi-oriented crack damages. To describe the effect of directional nonlocality on the anisotropic tensile damage, based on the existing test results, the nonlocal damage factor is defined in each reference orientation. The reduced compressive strength in the cracked concrete is defined by the multi-oriented crack damages defined as excluding the tensile normal plastic strain from the compressive equivalent plastic strain. The proposed model is implemented to finite element analysis, and it is verified by comparisons with various existing panel test results.

  • This paper suggests a method for optimal power assignment of the satellite transponder input carriers in the Multi-level & Multi-bandwidth system. The interference and the noise effects analyzed for the optimal power assignment are intermodulation product caused by the nonlinear transponder characteristics, adjacent channel interference, co-channel interference, and thermal noise in the satellite link. The Fletcher- Powell algorithm is used to determine the optimal input carrier power. The performance criteria for optimal power assignment is classified into 4 categories according to the CNR of destination receiver earth station to meet the requirement for various satellite link environment. We have performed mathematical analysis of objective functions and their derivatives for use in the Fletcher-Powell algorithm, and presented various simulation results based on mathematical analysis. Since the satellite link, it is meaningful to model and analyze these effects in a unified manner and present the method for optimal power assignment of transponder input carriers.

  • LBS services is a user-centric location based information service, where its importance has been discussed as an essential engine in an Ubiquitous Age. We aimed to develop an ontology reasoning system that enables users to derive recommended results suitable through selection standard reasoning according to various users' preferences. In order to achieve this goal, we designed the Geo-ontology system which enabled the construction of personal characteristics of users, knowledge on personal preference and knowledge on spatial and geographical preference. We also integrated a function of reasoning relevant information through the construction of Cost Value ontology using multi-criteria decision making by giving weight according to users' preference.

Multi-potential capacity for reinforced concrete members under pure torsion

  • Unlike the existing truss models for shear and torsion analysis, in this study, the torsional capacities of reinforced concrete (RC) members were estimated by introducing multi-potential capacity criteria that considered the aggregate interlock, concrete crushing, and spalling of concrete cover. The smeared truss model based on the fixed-angle theory was utilized to obtain the torsional behavior of reinforced concrete member, and the multi-potential capacity criteria were then applied to draw the capacity of the member. In addition, to avoid any iterative calculation in the existing torsional behavior model, a simple strength model was suggested that considers key variables, such as the effective thickness of torsional member, principal stress angle, and strain effect that reduces the resistance of concrete due to large longitudinal tensile strain. The proposed multi-potential capacity concept and the simple strength model were verified by comparing with test results collected from the literature. The study found that the multi-potential capacity could estimate in a rational manner not only the torsional strength but also the failure mode of RC members subjected to torsional moment, by reflecting the reinforcing index in both transverse and longitudinal directions, as well as the sectional and material properties of RC members.

  • A novel multi-criteria decision making strategy is developed for the construction of industrial symbiosis network in eco-industrial park and the strategy is applied to the construction of acid/alkali wastewater neutralization network in Yeosu industrial complex. Acid (or alkali) wastewater is commonly generated in chemical industries, and it can be used as neutralizing agent for alkali (or acid) wastewater generated from another source. As a consequence, a large-scale industrial symbiosis network for wastewater neutralization can be constructed in petrochemical complexes where a large amount of acid/alkali wastewater is generated. In this study, substance flow model is constructed which describes the wastewater neutralization network and multi-criteria decision making strategy is applied to find a few candidate for industrial symbiosis network.

  • The requirements of multi-resolution models of feature-based solids, which represent an object at many levels of feature detail, are increasing for engineering purposes, such as analysis, network-based collaborative design, virtual prototyping and manufacturing. To provide multi-resolution models for various applications, it is essential to generate adequate solid models at varying levels of detail (LOD) after feature rearrangement, based on the LOD criteria. However, the non-commutative property of the union and subtraction Boolean operations is a severe obstacle to arbitrary feature rearrangement. To solve this problem we propose history-based Boolean operations that satisfy the commutative law between union and subtraction operations by considering the history of the Boolean operations. Because these operations guarantee the same resulting shape as the original and reasonable shapes at the intermediate LODs for an arbitrary rearrangement of its features, various LOD criteria can be applied for multi-resolution modeling in different applications.
