  • On-site monitoring of vegetable growth parameters, such as leaf length, leaf area, and fresh weight, in an agricultural field can provide useful information for farmers to establish farm management strategies suitable for optimum production of vegetables. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are currently gaining a growing interest for agricultural applications. This study reports on validation testing of previously developed vegetable growth estimation models based on UAV-based RGB images for white radish and Chinese cabbage. Specific objective was to investigate the potential of the UAV-based RGB camera system for effectively quantifying temporal and spatial variability in the growth status of white radish and Chinese cabbage in a field. RGB images were acquired based on an automated flight mission with a multi-rotor UAV equipped with a low-cost RGB camera while automatically tracking on a predefined path. The acquired images were initially geo-located based on the log data of flight information saved into the UAV, and then mosaicked using a commerical image processing software. Otsu threshold-based crop coverage and DSM-based crop height were used as two predictor variables of the previously developed multiple linear regression models to estimate growth parameters of vegetables. The predictive capabilities of the UAV sensing system for estimating the growth parameters of the two vegetables were evaluated quantitatively by comparing to ground truth data. There were highly linear relationships between the actual and estimated leaf lengths, widths, and fresh weights, showing coefficients of determination up to 0.7. However, there were differences in slope between the ground truth and estimated values lower than 0.5, thereby requiring the use of a site-specific normalization method.

  • Patient dose verification is one of the most important parts in quality assurance of the treatment delivery for radiation therapy. The dose distributions may be meaningfully improved by modulating two dimensional intensity profile of the individual high energy radiation beams In this study, a new method is presented for the pre-treatment dosimetric verification of these two dimensional distributions of beam intensity by means of a charge coupled device video camera-based fluoroscopic device (henceforth called as CCD-VCFD) as a radiation detecter with a custom-made software for dose calculation from fluorescence signals. This system of dosimeter (CCD-VCFD) could reproduce three dimensional (3D) relative dose distribution from the digitized fluoroscopic signals for small (1.0$\times$1.0 cm$^2$ square, ø 1.0 cm circular ) and large (30$\times$30cm$^2$) field sizes used in intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). For the small beam sizes of photon and electron, the calculations are performed In absolute beam fluence profiles which are usually used for calculation of the patient dose distribution. The good linearity with respect to the absorbed dose, independence of dose rate, and three dimensional profiles of small beams using the CCD-VCFD were demonstrated by relative measurements in high energy Photon (15 MV) and electron (9 MeV) beams. These measurements of beam profiles with CCD-VCFD show good agreement with those with other dosimeters such as utramicro-cylindrical (UC) ionization chamber and radiographic film. The study of the radiation dosimetric technique using CCD-VCFD may provide a fast and accurate pre-treatment verification tool for the small beam used in stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and can be used for verification of dose distribution from dynamic multi-leaf collimation system (DMLC).

  • An efficient modeling and management of a large amount of surface data for a wide rage of geographic information play an important role in determining the functionality of 3D geographic information system. It has been put many efforts to design and manage an effective way to enhence the manipulation of the data by considering geometry type and data structures. Recently, DEM(Data Elevation Model) and TIN(Triangulated Irregular Network) are used for representing surface data. In this paper, we propose a 3D data processing method. The method utilizes the major properties of DEM and TIN, respectively. Furthermore, by approximating DEM with a TIN of an appropriate resolution, we can support a fast and realistic surface modeling. We implement the structure with the following 4 level stages. The first is an optimal resolution of DEM which represent all of wide range of geographic data. The second is the full resolution DEM which is a subarea of original data generated by user's selection in our implemeatation. The third is the TIN approximation of this data with a proper resolution determined by the relative position with the camera. And the last step is multi-resolution TIN data whose resolution is dynamically decided by considering which direction user take notice currently. Specially, the TIN of the last step is designed for realtime camera navigation. By using the structure we implemented realtime surface clipping, efficient approximation of height field and the locally detailed surface LOD(Level of Detail). We used the initial 10-meter sampling DEM data of Seoul, KOREA and implement the structure to the 3D Virtual GIS based on the Internet.

  • Stereo cameras are the most widely used sensing systems for automated machines including robots to interact with their three-dimensional(3D) working environments. The position of a target point in the 3D world coordinates can be measured by the use of stereo cameras and the camera calibration is an important preliminary step for the task. Existing camera calibration techniques can be classified into two large categories - linear and nonlinear techniques. While linear techniques are simple but somewhat inaccurate, the nonlinear ones require a modeling process to compensate for the lens distortion and a rather complicated procedure to solve the nonlinear equations. In this paper, a method employing a neural network for the calibration problem is described for tackling the problems arisen when existing techniques are applied and the results are reported. Particularly, it is shown experimentally that by utilizing the function approximation capability of multi-layer neural networks trained by the back-propagation(BP) algorithm to learn the error pattern of a linear technique, the measurement accuracy can be simply and efficiently increased.

  • We have designed and manufactured the Earth observation camera (EOC) of multi-purpose infrared imaging system (MIRIS). MIRIS is a main payload of the STSAT-3, which will be launched in late 2012. The main objective of the EOC is to test the operation of Korean IR technology in space, so we have designed the optical and mechanical system of the EOC to fit the IR detector system. We have assembled the flight model (FM) of EOC and performed environment tests successfully. The EOC is now ready to be integrated into the satellite system waiting for operation in space, as planned.

  • The one-person producing system is that planning program, arrangements, composition, taking pictures and edition are all done by only one person. In the reality of the producing systems of the broadcasting programs, as the number of the broadcasting stations, which apply one-person producing systems, is gradually increasing, the study on the change is going on. In this study I grasped the merits and demerits of both systems ; multi men producing system and one-person producing system. And then I analyzed the sudden change of the method of the producing programs into one using the 6m digital camera. The merits of producing programs by means of the 6m digital cameras are following ; the mobility of producing programs, a close contact with the source, the enlargement of the diversity of the contents and cutting down expenses. The demerits of it are following ; a lowering of the degree of completion and the unstableness of an image. Nowadays because of the enlargement of the rate of the outsourcing production, the number of the independent production studios rapidly increased. From the viewpoint of cutting down expenses and the diversity of contents, the number of broadcasting programs produced by means of one-person producing broadcasting program system is increasing.

  • We conducted thermal analyses and cooling tests of the space observation camera (SOC) of the multi-purpose infrared imaging system (MIRIS) to verify passive cooling. The thermal analyses were conducted with NX 7.0 TMG for two cases of attitude of the MIRIS: for the worst hot case and normal case. Through the thermal analyses of the flight model, it was found that even in the worst case the telescope could be cooled to less than $206^{\circ}K$. This is similar to the results of the passive cooling test (${\sim}200.2^{\circ}K$). For the normal attitude case of the analysis, on the other hand, the SOC telescope was cooled to about $160^{\circ}K$ in 10 days. Based on the results of these analyses and the test, it was determined that the telescope of the MIRIS SOC could be successfully cooled to below $200^{\circ}K$ with passive cooling. The SOC is, therefore, expected to have optimal performance under cooled conditions in orbit.

  • To generate a complete 3D model from depth images of multiple RGB-D cameras, it is necessary to find 3D transformations between RGB-D cameras. This paper proposes a convenient view calibration technique using a spherical object. Conventional view calibration methods use either planar checkerboards or 3D objects with coded-pattern. In these conventional methods, detection and matching of pattern features and codes takes a significant time. In this paper, we propose a convenient view calibration method using both 3D depth and 2D texture images of a spherical object simultaneously. First, while moving the spherical object freely in the modeling space, depth and texture images of the object are acquired from all RGB-D camera simultaneously. Then, the external parameters of each RGB-D camera is calibrated so that the coordinates of the sphere center coincide in the world coordinate system.

  • Recently, interests in space information data are increasing due to the initiation of spatial information open platform service by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The purpose of this study is optimizing management and storing of the texture data, one kinds of 3D-spatial data. First, extract 3D-spatial data through the aerial triangulation and 3D-writing using raw image taken with the Multi-directional aerial camera and the vertical aerial camera. And develop the method to create single texture data and related technique by align and place corresponding 3D-spatial data to optimal storage space. Through experiment, the results show effect of 8 times of storage capacity reduction compared to existing single-file storage method, additionally, new method can improve file management efficiency in comparison with multiple file storage method. The results of this study can be cornerstone of three-dimensional space information management when dealing with bulk data, and utilizations will be enhanced through the further studies and algorithm improvement.
