As the testing instrument for seismic research, the multi-platform shaking table system of SESTEC in the Pusan National University was introduced to suggest the multi-support shaking table testing methods and also to investigate its ability and applicability. 2 spans single-pylon cable-stayed bridge model, 3 spans girder bridge model and nuclear piping system model are presented and the acceleration and displacement table feedbacks of the each tests are compared to verify the simultaneous excitation ability in time domain and frequency domain.
Skewed bridges, being irregular structures with complicated dynamic behavior, are more susceptible to earthquake damage. Reliable seismic-resistant design of skewed bridges can be achieved by accurate determination of nonlinear seismic demands. However, the effect of geometric characteristics on the response modification factor (R-factor) is not accounted for in bridge design practices. This study attempts to investigate the effects of changes in the number of spans, skew angle and bearing stiffness on R-factor values and to assess the seismic fragility of skewed bridges. Results indicated that changes in the skew angle had no significant effect on R-factor values which were in consonance with code-prescribed R values. Also, unlike the increase in the number of spans that resulted in a decrease in the R-factor, the increase in bearing stiffness led to higher R-factor values. Findings of the fragility analysis implied that although the increase in the number of spans, as well as the increase in the skew angle, led to a higher failure probability, greater values of bearing stiffness reduced the collapse probability. For practicing design engineers, it is recommended that maximum demands on substructure elements to be calculated when the excitation angle is applied along the principal axes of skewed bridges.

This paper compares the seismic response control performance of linear and non-linear models fer tuned liquid damper (TLD). The existing linear and nonlinear TLD models were used for the numerical analysis of single degree of freedom (SDOF) and multi degree of freedom (MDOF) systems with TLD. The nonlinear model considers the variation of the frequency and damping of the TLD with varying excitation amplitude while the linear one has the invariant parameters. Numerical analysis results from SDOF systems indicate that the nonlinear model shows about 5% better control performance than linear one when the mass ratio is 2% and the optimal parameters for reducing peak responses are dependent on the characteristics of the excitation earthquake loads.
An integrated optimal structural design method for a diagrid structure and control device was developed. A multi-objective genetic algorithm was used and a 60-story diagrid building structure was developed as an example structure. Artificial wind and earthquake loads were generated to assess the wind-induced and seismic responses. A smart tuned mass damper (TMD) was used as a structural control system and an MR (magnetorheological) damper was employed to develop a smart TMD (STMD). The multi-objective genetic algorithm used five objectives including a reduction of the dynamic responses, additional stiffness and damping, mass of STMD, capacity of the MR damper for the integrated optimization of a diagrid structure and a STMD. From the proposed method, integrated optimal designs for the diagrid structure and STMD were obtained. The numerical simulation also showed that the STMD provided good control performance for reducing the wind-induced and seismic responses of a tall diagrid building structure.
The story shear force distributions of most seismic design codes generally reflect the influences of higher vibration modes based on the elastic deformations of structures. However, as the seismic design allows for the plastic behavior of a structure, the story shear force distribution shall be effective after it is yielded due to earthquake excitation. Hence this study conducted numerical analyses on the story shear force distributions of most seismic design codes to find out the characteristics of how a structure is damaged between stories. Analysis results show that the more forces are distributed onto high stories, the lower its concentration is and the more energy is absorbed. From the results, this study proposes the optimum story shear force distribution and its calculation formula that make the damages uniformly distributed onto whole stories. Consequently, the story damage distribution from the optimum calculation formula was considerably more stable than existing seismic design codes.

The dynamic characterization of a three-story auxiliary building in a nuclear power plant (NPP) constructed with a monolithic reinforced concrete shear wall is investigated in this study. The shear wall is subjected to a joint-research, round-robin analysis organized by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, South Korea, to predict seismic responses of that auxiliary building in NPP through a shake table test. Five different intensity measures of the base excitation are applied to the shaking table test to get the acceleration responses from the different building locations for one horizontal direction (front-back). Simultaneously to understand the global damage scenario of the structure, a frequency search test is conducted after each excitation. The primary motivation of this study is to develop a nonlinear numerical model considering the multi-layered shell element and compare it with the test result to validate through the modal parameter identification and floor responses. In addition, the acceleration amplification factor is evaluated to judge the dynamic behavior of the shear wall with the existing standard, thus providing theoretical support for engineering practice.

When adjacent tall buildings experience earthquake excitation, structural pounding may happen. In order to mitigate seismic pounding damage to adjacent structures, many studies have been done to date. Tuned mass dampers (TMD) are widely used for reduction of dynamic responses of building structures subjected to earthquake excitations. If a TMD is shared between adjacent buildings and it shows good control performance, it will be effective and economic means to reduce seismic responses of adjacent structures. In this study, control performance of a shared tuned mass damper (STMD) for seismic response reduction of adjacent buildings has been evaluated. For this purpose, two 8-story example buildings were used and multi-objective genetic algorithms has been employed for optimal design of the stiffness and damping parameters of the STMD. Based on numerical analyses, it has been shown that a STMD can effectively control dynamic responses and reduce the effect of pounding between adjacent buildings subjected to earthquake excitations in comparison with a traditional TMD.

Base isolation system is widely used for reduction of dynamic responses of structures subjected to seismic load. Recently, research on a smart base isolation system that can effectively reduce dynamic responses of the isolated structure without accompanying increases in base drifts has been actively conducted. In this study, a smart base isolation system was applied to an arch structure subjected to seismic excitation and its control performance for reduction of seismic responses was evaluated. In order to make a smart base isolation system, 4kN MR dampers and low damping elastomeric bearings were used. Seismic response control performance of the proposed smart base isolation system was compared to that of the optimally designed lead-rubber bearing(LRB) isolation system. To this end, an artificial ground motion developed based on KBC2009 design response spectrum was used as a seismic excitation. Fuzzy control algorithm was used to control MR damper in the smart base isolation system and multi-objective genetic algorithm was employed to optimize the fuzzy controller. Based on numerical simulation results, it has been shown that the smart base isolation system can drastically reduce base drifts and seismic responses of the example arch structure in comparison with LRB isolation system.
In this study, numerical analyses were conducted to investigate the load transfer mechanisms and dynamic responses between the vertical shaft and the surrounding soil using a dynamic analysis method and a pseudo-static method (called response displacement method, RDM). Numerical solutions were verified against data from the literature. A series of parametric studies was performed with three different transient motions and various surrounding soils. The results showed that the soil stratigraphy and excitation motions significantly influenced the dynamic behavior of the vertical shaft. Maximum values of the shear force and bending moment occurred near an interface between the soil layers. In addition, deformations and load distributions of the vertical shaft were highly influenced by the amplified seismic waves on the vertical shaft constructed in multi-layered soils. Throughout the comparison results between the dynamic analysis method and the RDM, the results from the dynamic analyses showed good agreement with those from the RDM calculated by a double-cosine method.
The study considers earthquake shake table testing of bending-torsion coupled structures under multi-component stationary random earthquake excitations. An experimental procedure to arrive at the optimal excitation cross-power spectral density (psd) functions which maximize/minimize the steady state variance of a chosen response variable is proposed. These optimal functions are shown to be derivable in terms of a set of system frequency response functions which could be measured experimentally without necessitating an idealized mathematical model to be postulated for the structure under study. The relationship between these optimized cross-psd functions to the most favourable/least favourable angle of incidence of seismic waves on the structure is noted. The optimal functions are also shown to be system dependent, mathematically the sharpest, and correspond to neither fully correlated motions nor independent motions. The proposed experimental procedure is demonstrated through shake table studies on two laboratory scale building frame models.
