  • Quantum beam technology has been expected to develop breakthroughs for nanotechnology during the third basic plan of science and technology (2006~2010). Recently, Green- or Life Innovations has taken over the national interests in the fourth basic science and technology plan (2011~2015). The NIMS (National Institute for Materials Science) has been conducting the corresponding mid-term research plans, as well as other national projects, such as nano-Green project (Global Research for Environment and Energy based on Nanomaterials science). In this lecture, the research trends in Japan and NIMS are firstly reviewed, and the typical achievements are highlighted over key nanotechnology fields. As one of the key nanotechnologies, the quantum beam research in NIMS focused on synchrotron radiation, neutron beams and ion/atom beams, having complementary attributes. The facilities used are SPring-8, nuclear reactor JRR-3, pulsed neutron source J-PARC and ion-laser-combined beams as well as excited atomic beams. Materials studied are typically fuel cell materials, superconducting/magnetic/multi-ferroic materials, quasicrystals, thermoelectric materials, precipitation-hardened steels, nanoparticle-dispersed materials. Here, we introduce a few topics of neutron scattering and ion beam nanofabrication. For neutron powder diffraction, the NIMS has developed multi-purpose pattern fitting software, post RIETAN2000. An ionic conductor, doped Pr2NiO4, which is a candidate for fuel-cell material, was analyzed by neutron powder diffraction with the software developed. The nuclear-density distribution derived revealed the two-dimensional network of the diffusion paths of oxygen ions at high temperatures. Using the high sensitivity of neutron beams for light elements, hydrogen states in a precipitation-strengthened steel were successfully evaluated. The small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) demonstrated the sensitive detection of hydrogen atoms trapped at the interfaces of nano-sized NbC. This result provides evidence for hydrogen embrittlement due to trapped hydrogen at precipitates. The ion beam technology can give novel functionality on a nano-scale and is targeting applications in plasmonics, ultra-fast optical communications, high-density recording and bio-patterning. The technologies developed are an ion-and-laser combined irradiation method for spatial control of nanoparticles, and a nano-masked ion irradiation method for patterning. Furthermore, we succeeded in implanting a wide-area nanopattern using nano-masks of anodic porous alumina. The patterning of ion implantation will be further applied for controlling protein adhesivity of biopolymers. It has thus been demonstrated that the quantum beam-based nanotechnology will lead the innovations both for nano-characterization and nano-fabrication.

  • In the field of the bioinformatics, it plays an important role in predicting functional information or structure information to search similar sequence in biological DB. Biolrgical sequences have been increased dramatically since Human Genome Project. At this point, because the searching speed for the similar sequence is highly regarded as the important factor for predicting function or structure, the SMP(Sysmmetric Multi-Processors) computer or cluster is being used in order to improve the performance of searching time. As the method to improve the searching time of BLAST(Basic Local Alighment Search Tool) being used for the similarity sequence search, We suggest the nBLAST algorithm performing on the cluster environment in this paper. As the nBLAST uses the MPI(Message Passing Interface), the parallel library without modifying the existing BLAST source code, to distribute the query to each node and make it performed in parallel, it is possible to easily make BLAST parallel without complicated procedures such as the configuration. In addition, with the experiment performing the nBLAST in the 28 nodes of LINUX cluster, the enhanced performance according to the increase in the number of the nodes has been confirmed.

  • This research conducts both experimental evaluation and resident's assessment of zero food waste system (ZFWS) in multifamily housing estates in order to explore the feasibility of ZFWS embedded in fermentation and extinction technology utilizing wood chips turned into fertilizer. Having been established in a multifamily housing estate, ZEFWS was proved to be functional and effective. During the 3-month experimental period, the weight between infused food waste and its reactor was reduced significantly enough, and the chemical analysis showed that the concentration of organic compounds went from 87.9% to 75.8%, $H_2O$ decreased from 69.7% to 45.5%, NaCl rose from 0.2% to 0.5%, pH increased from 4.6 to 7.8, and ATP escalated from 505.3 nmol/L to 723.5 nmol/L. Also, the chemical analysis of the output in the experimentation indicated adequacy of the organic fertilizer. In the self-administered questionnaire survey for residents participating in the field project, almost all the respondents viewed that ZFWS can compete with conventional food waste disposal methods and an idealistic way to upcycling food waste into fertilizer.

  • This study investigated the patterns of acquiring anti-mycobacterial resistance in individuals who were susceptible to all anti-mycobacterial drugs in their initial treatment. From 2010 to 2019, anti-mycobacterial drug susceptibility tests were conducted on patients who were referred to the Green Cross Laboratories. The test results of 594 anti-mycobacterial drug sensitivity tests were collected at 111 medical institutions. The first test results had 594 cases in which all anti-mycobacterial drugs were susceptible. Isoniazid (INH), rifampin (RIF), streptomycin (SM), and quinolone (QUI) showed the highest single-resistant conversion rates. Out of 56 patients, 17 patients (30.4%) showed a high conversion rate of resistance to both INH and RIF. The tracking period was analyzed from a minimum of 98 days to 1,862 days, and an average of 435.6 days for INH, and a minimum of 108 days to 1,673 days, with an average of 457.7 days for RIF. In the case of tuberculosis patients who are susceptible to all anti-mycobacterial drugs, it is considered that the conversion to resistant and multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) must be confirmed through an anti-mycobacterial susceptibility test after 3 months. It is hoped that this study will help the national tuberculosis management project to improve public health.

  • If the safety factor does not secure the safety factor suggested in the design standard at the slope design stage, the safety factor is secured by installing an anchor. Stability analysis is used to verify the effect of reinforcing the slope of the anchor, but in this process, most of the anchor construction intervals are assumed to be equal and analyzed. For economical and effective slope reinforcement, stability analysis is required by adjusting the anchor construction interval. In this study, the effect of the anchor construction interval on the change of the safety factor of the slope was identified. Stability analysis was performed by setting a virtual slope with two berms and different anchor construction intervals. As a result of the analysis, the stability of the slope is secured when the anchor spacing of the lower surface is narrowed and the anchor gaps of the upper and middle surfaces are wider than when anchors are installed at the same intervals on the upper, middle, and lower surfaces of the slope. The result was a 15% reduction in the amount of anchors. This means that, rather than reinforcing anchors at the same intervals, it is economical and effective to have an economical and effective reinforcement effect to vary the anchor construction intervals according to the slope characteristics.

  • In January 2022, a new legislation was enforced to enhance the safety of underground construction. Consequently, a comprehensive assessment of underground safety is now an integral part of the planning process, including an evaluation of its impact. Ensuring the stability of temporary retaining walls during underground excavation has become paramount, prompting a heightened focus on the assessment of underground safety. This study delves into the analysis of the Multi-axis Flat Continuous Soil Cement Wall retaining wall (MFS) construction method. This method facilitates the expansion of wall thickness in the ground and provides flexibility in selecting and spacing H-piles. Through laboratory model tests, we scrutinized the load-displacement behavior of the wall, varying the H-pile installation intervals using the MFS method. Additionally, a 3-dimensional numerical analysis was conducted to explore the influence of H-pile installation intervals and sizes on the load for different thicknesses of the MFS retaining wall. The displacement analysis yielded the calculation of the height of the arching effect acting on the wall. To further our understanding, a design method was introduced, quantitatively analyzing the results of axial force and shear force acting on the wall. This involved applying the maximum arching height, calculated by the MFS method, to the existing member force review method. The axial force and shear force, contingent on the H-pile installation interval and size applied to the MFS retaining wall, demonstrated a reduction effect ranging from 24.6% to 62.9%.

  • With the development of media, the methods for the documentation of intangible cultural heritage have been also developed and diversified. As well as the previous analogue ways of documentation, the have been recently applying new multi-media technologies focusing on digital pictures, sound sources, movies, etc. Among the new technologies, the documentation of intangible cultural heritage using the method of 'Motion Capture' has proved itself prominent especially in the fields that require three-dimensional documentation such as dances and performances. Motion Capture refers to the documentation technology which records the signals of the time varing positions derived from the sensors equipped on the surface of an object. It converts the signals from the sensors into digital data which can be plotted as points on the virtual coordinates of the computer and records the movement of the points during a certain period of time, as the object moves. It produces scientific data for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage, by displaying digital data which represents the virtual motion of a holder of an intangible cultural heritage. National Research Institute of Cultural Properties (NRICP) has been working on for the development of new documentation method for the Important Intangible Cultural Heritage designated by Korean government. This is to be done using 'motion capture' equipments which are also widely used for the computer graphics in movie or game industries. This project is designed to apply the motion capture technology for 3 years- from 2005 to 2007 - for 11 performances from 7 traditional dances of which body gestures have considerable values among the Important Intangible Cultural Heritage performances. This is to be supported by lottery funds. In 2005, the first year of the project, accumulated were data of single dances, such as Seungmu (monk's dance), Salpuri(a solo dance for spiritual cleansing dance), Taepyeongmu (dance of peace), which are relatively easy in terms of performing skills. In 2006, group dances, such as Jinju Geommu (Jinju sword dance), Seungjeonmu (dance for victory), Cheoyongmu (dance of Lord Cheoyong), etc., will be documented. In the last year of the project, 2007, education programme for comparative studies, analysis and transmission of intangible cultural heritage and three-dimensional contents for public service will be devised, based on the accumulated data, as well as the documentation of Hakyeonhwadae Habseolmu (crane dance combined with the lotus blossom dance). By describing the processes and results of motion capture documentation of Salpuri dance (Lee Mae-bang), Taepyeongmu (Kang seon-young) and Seungmu (Lee Mae-bang, Lee Ae-ju and Jung Jae-man) conducted in 2005, this report introduces a new approach for the documentation of intangible cultural heritage. During the first year of the project, two questions have been raised. First, how can we capture motions of a holder (dancer) without cutoffs during quite a long performance? After many times of tests, the motion capture system proved itself stable with continuous results. Second, how can we reproduce the accurate motion without the re-targeting process? The project re-created the most accurate motion of the dancer's gestures, applying the new technology to drew out the shape of the dancers's body digital data before the motion capture process for the first time in Korea. The accurate three-dimensional body models for four holders obtained by the body scanning enhanced the accuracy of the motion capture of the dance.

  • Cost of construction project have to be estimated based on drawing before execution. Cost estimate and check would be performed numerously for preparing general outline of requirements and determining the budget at conceptual planning stage, for obtaining decision on every matter related to design, specification, construction and cost at design stage, and for predicting bidding cost. Thus, importance of cost estimation cannot emphasize too much in construction. However, there are lack of standard estimation method, process, and cost analysis method, that square foot estimation method is as used as eyer, in Korea. Thus, This research present the direction for improving cost estimation and management in construction; It is demanded that establishing standard data base methodology, multi-level database model CUBE, and standard cost planning process, choosing cost estimation methodology according to objectives and cost planning process, and making more experts.

  • Today, the outreach of National Meteorological Service such as PC cluster based Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) technique is vigorous in the world wide. In this regard, WMO (World Meteorological Organization) asked KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) to formulate a regional project, which cover most of RA II members, using similar technical system with KMA's. In that sense, Meteorological Research Institute (METRI) in KMA developed Mongolian NWP System (MNWPS) based on PC cluster and transferred the technology to Weather Service Center in Mongolia. The hybrid parallel algorithm and channel bonding technique were adopted to cut cost and showed 41% faster performance than single MPI (Message Passing Interface) approach. The cluster technique of Beowulf type was also adopted for convenient management and saving resources. The Linux based free operating system provide very cost effective solution for operating multi-nodes. Additionally, the GNU software provide many tools, utilities and applications for construction and management of a cluster. A flash flood event happened in Mongolia (2 September 2003) was selected for test run, and MNWPS successfully simulated the event with initial and boundary condition from Global Data Assimilation and Prediction System (GDAPS) of KMA. Now, the cluster based NWP System in Mongolia has been operated for local prediction around the region and provided various auxiliary charts.
