The red mud generated from bauxite during the Bayer alumina production process has been regarded as an industrial waste due to the high alkaline property and high content of Na. Despite of its environmental problem, various studies for recovery of the valuable resources from red mud has been also carried out because of high content (25.7 wt.% as Fe2O3 in this study) of iron in red mud. In order to recover the iron resource in the red mud, microwave heating experiments were performed with adding of activated carbon and elemental sulfur to the red mud. Through the microwave heating the powdered red mud mixtures converted to porous and vitrified solid aggregates. The vitrified aggregates produced by microwave heating are composed of goethite, zero valent iron (Fe0), pyrrhotite and pyrite. And then, the microwave heating samples were dissolved in the aqua regia solution, and Fe precipitates were obtained as a Fe-chlorides by adding of NaCl salt in the aqua regia solution. The Fe recovery rates in the Fe-chloride precipitates showed differences depending on the experimental mixture conditions, and Fe grades of the end products are 49.0 wt.%, 58.0 wt.% and 59.5 wt.% under mixture conditions of red mud, red mud + activated carbon, and red mud + activated carbon + elemental S, respectively. The Fe content of 56.0 wt.% is generally known as the grade value of Fe in a iron ore for iron production, and the Fe grades of microwave heating samples with adding activated carbon and elemental S in this study are higher than the grade value of 56.0 wt.%.

Red mud is an industrial by-product produced during the manufacturing aluminum hydroxide ($Al(OH)_3$) and aluminum oxide($Al_2O_3$) from Bauxite ores. In Korea, approximately 2 tons of red mud in a sludge form with 50% moisture content is produced when 1ton of $Al_2O_3$ is produced through the Bayer process. In the paper, dispersion characteristics of liquefied red mud that does not require heating and grinding process for recycling were investigated through viscosity and sediment index. The results showed that the sediment index of liquefied red mud increased but viscosity of that decreased with a higher W/R ratio. Also we proposed the range of initial viscosity from 2000cP to 8000cP and target sedimentation index below 20% at elapsed time 180days for stable dispersion of liquefied red mud.
The mud shrimp Upogebia major (Upogebiidae: Decapoda: Crustacea) is a common species on muddy and sandy mud tidal flats in the west coast of Korea. They reside in Y-shaped burrows that can extend up to more than 2 meters below the sediment surface. They feed on suspended detritus carried into their burrow by the beating of their pleopods and captured by their hairy first two pairs of thoracic legs. Mud shrimp burrows provide a habitat for a variety of small organisms such as crabs, shrimps, polychaetes, and mollusks. Ovigerous females are observed from December to May. Females deposit eggs only once per breeding season. They start hatching in March and the pelagic larvae of first zoea appear in March and April, followed by benthic settlement in May. Growth over the first year is rapid, and females deposit their first eggs in the third breeding season, 31 months after their settlement. Adult shrimps live for 4~5 years. Depth of the burrow increases with body length. The deep burrows provide refuge from predators and physical stress, allowing the shrimps to survive for a long time. The mud shrimps supply oxygen-rich water to their deep burrows, and exert a great influence on the structure and metabolism of the tidal flat benthic community. However, recently this type of mud shrimp has posed a serious threat to the Korean clam industry along the west coast of Korea. The extensive burrowing shrimp populations suddenly invaded the tidal flats from 2010 where the clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) are raised. As a consequence, clam production has decreased by about 10% over the past three years in some Korean clam beds. Therefore, the objective of this study is to review the biology of this mud shrimp in order to seek solutions to control the burrowing of these shrimps.
Effect of amount of red mud and processing method on the tensile and impact properties of polymers were investigated when the red mud was added as a filler to polypropylene (PP), low density polyethylene (LDPE) and PP/LDPE blend. Especially in case of PP, increase in the tensile strength, elongation at break and absorbed energy was observed when extrusion was carried out more than two times. Tensile strength showed a very remarkable increase when master batch was used in comparison with simple multiple extrusion. In case of LDPE, 10% addition of red mud resulted in the increase of tensile modulus and impact strength, while 20% addition caused a decrease in the same properties. Addition of 5% EVA could reverse this trend. Addition of 20% red mud to PP/LDPE blend gave a decrease in impact strength but 5% EPR compatibilizer could improve the impact properties. Above results showed that the processing method is a very important factor in the utilization of red mud as a plastic fillers and master batch is one of the very effective way of red mud addition.
As the preceding research for the design of gangway in the next generation high speed train, the aero-acoustic noise at the gangway is calculated. For this purpose, the shape of gangway with mud flaps is assumed as the two-dimensional cavity. Then, 5 gap sizes between mud flaps of gangway are selected and parametric study is performed according to the gap sizes. From this study, the aerodynamic features such as vortex shedding, pressure, etc. are computed. Also, the aero-acoustic properties of tonal noise and overall noise are analyzed at the 3 locations of microphone and the relation between the gap size of mud flap and the noise level is assessed. Through this study, it is shown that the noise characteristics of base and specific models are better than those of other models.

Red mud is an inorganic by-product obtained from the mineral processing of alumina from Bauxite ores. A highly alkali inorganic waste product with a pH level over 11, red mud in its original state negatively impacts the ecosystem, so appropriate treatment is necessary. The development of alkali activated slag-red mud cement can be a representative study aimed at recycling the strong alkali of the red mud as a construction material. However, Alkali-activated binders that use sodium activators have been reported to be more vulnerable to efflorescence. Therefore, in this study, the compressive strength, pore characteristics, water absorption, elution characteristics, and efflorescence properties of alkali-activated slag cement mortar were assessed according to their red mud substitution ratio.

This paper aims to recycle red mud from a byproduct in the alumina industry as an alternative raw material for depleted natural resources. In order to apply red mud as a ceramic material, red mud ceramics were prepared according to mixing and temperature in a laboratory environment. Compared with KS L 4201 in terms of compression ratios and absorptions, it is found that two kinds of conditions for one type and three conditions for two types meet the standard. When red mud is used as a clay brick raw material, the substitution ratio of red mud is 10% or less, and the firing temperature is considered to be appropriate at $1200^{\circ}C$. In order to apply red mud to clay brick raw material in actual field, various samples and firing temperature should be considered in the future.

Recently, as the national policy of green growth is promoted, construction field also makes an effort to reduce CO2 gas released when producing cement continuously. In other words, as the method solving environmental pollution and resources exhaustion, lots of mineral material compounds such as blast furnace slag powder which is industrial by-product, fly ash, red mud, etc. are examined to bo used as the substitute good of cement Therefore this study is to investigate the hardening characteristics of alumino-silicate inorganic binder using red-mud used as a accelerator of industrial by-product such as fly ash and blast furnace slag powder according to curing temperature. As a result, it is effective to use red-mud as the accelerator of inorganic binder with other additory accelerators.
