In this paper, a 1.5 kW Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (IPMSG) with a power conditioner for the grid integration of a variable-speed wind turbine is developed. The power-conditioning system consists of a series-type 12-pulse diode rectifier powered by a phase shifting transformer and then cascaded to a PWM voltage source inverter. The PWM inverter is utilized to supply sinusoidal currents to the utility line by controlling the active and reactive current components in the q-d rotating reference frame. While the q-axis active current of the PWM inverter is regulated to follow an optimized active current reference so as to track the maximum power of the wind turbine. The d-axis reactive current can be adjusted to control the reactive power and voltage. In order to track the maximum power of the wind turbine, the optimal active current reference is determined by using a simple MPPT algorithm which requires only three sensors. Moreover, the phase angle of the utility voltage is detected using a simple electronic circuit consisting of both a zero-crossing voltage detecting circuit and a counter circuit employed with a crystal oscillator. At the generator terminals, a passive filter is designed not only to decrease the harmonic voltages and currents observed at the terminals of the IPMSG but also to improve the generator efficiency. The laboratory results indicate that the losses in the IPMSG can be effectively reduced by setting a passive filter at the generator terminals.

The major objective of this study is to develop and verify the KAUSAT-5 based on the modular 3U CubeSat standard platform. In the mechanical system design of a 3U standard platform, subsystem and micro equipment functions/performance should be integrated and miniaturized on micro-sized PCBs and electrical capability was maximized to accommodate multiple payloads. KAUSAT-5 is 3U-sized Cubesat which will be operated in Low Earth Orbit(LEO), which implements mainly two scientific missions; one is to observe the Earth through infrared camera and the other is to measure space radiation with a Geiger Muller tube. An additional mission is to verify the equipment(device) such as VSCMG and fuzzy logic-based MPPT internally developed. The results of ETB, qualification and acceptance level environmental tests were shown to verify standard platform and KAUSAT-5 Cubesat.

Wind is an abundant source of natural energy which can be utilized to generate power. Wind velocity does not remain constant, and as a result the output power of wind turbine generators (WTGs) fluctuates. To reduce the fluctuation, different approaches are already being proposed, such as energy storage devices, electric double layer capacitors, flywheels, and so on. These methods are effective but require a significant extra cost to installation and maintenance. This paper proposes to reduce output power fluctuation by controlling kinetic energy of a WTG system. A MW-class pitch-regulated permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is introduced to apply a power fluctuation reducing method. The major advantage of this proposed method is that, an additional energy storage system is not required to control the power fluctuation. Additionally, the proposed method can mitigate shaft stress of a WTG system. Which is reflected in an enhanced reliability of the wind turbine. Moreover, the proposed method can be changed to the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control method by adjusting an averaging time. The proposed power smoothing control is compared with the MPPT control method and verified by using the MATLAB SIMULINK environment.

In order to verify the efficiency or availability and stability of photovoltaic(PV) generation systems, huge system apparatuses are needed, in general, in which an actual size of solar panel, a type of converter system and some amount of load facilities should be installed in a particular location. It is also hardly possible to compare a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control scheme with others under the same weather and load conditions in an actual PV generation system. The only and a possible way to bring above-mentioned problem to be solved is to realize a transient simulation scheme for PV generation systems using real weather conditions such as insolation and surface temperature of solar cell. The authors, in this paper, introduces a novel simulation method, which is based on a real-time digital simulator (RTDS), for PV generation systems under the real weather conditions. Firstly, VI characteristic equation of a solar cell is developed as an empirical formula and reconstructed in the RTDS system, then the real data of weather conditions are interfaced to the analogue inputs of the RTDS. The outcomes of the simulation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed simulation scheme in this paper. The results shows that the cost effective verifying for the efficiency or availability and stability of PV generation systems and the comparison research of various control schemes like MPPT under the same real weather conditions are possible.

Photovoltaic and fuel cell systems can be used as power source in mobile robots. At this time the photovoltaic system generally generate power in daytime. The starting time of fuel cell is slower than the lithium battery. To compensate for these disadvantages, a battery charge-discharge system is used. Especially the bi-directional converter is used mainly in the charge-discharge method. The controller in a buck converter controls the input voltage of the converter to meet the maximum power point tracking(MPPT) performance. First of all, the simulations of hybrid system for battery charge-discharge system in each step simulated using solar and fuel cell modeling as input source in PSIM. Experiment of the buck and bi-directional converter system is conducted through using photovoltaic/fuel cel simulator(pCube) instead of solar and fuel cell. This hybrid system for battery charge discharge using photovoltaic/fuel cell generates emergency power for the communication system in mobile robot.
This paper presents a dual-algorithm search method (GWO-GSO) combining grey wolf optimization (GWO) and golden-section optimization (GSO) to realize maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for photovoltaic (PV) systems. First, a modified grey wolf optimization (MGWO) is activated for the global search. In conventional GWO, wolf leaders possess the same impact on decision-making. In this paper, the decision weights of wolf leaders are automatically adjusted with hunting progression, which is conducive to accelerating hunting. At the later stage, the algorithm is switched to GSO for the local search, which play a critical role in avoiding unnecessary search and reducing the tracking time. Additionally, a novel restart judgment based on the quasi-slope of the power-voltage curve is introduced to enhance the reliability of MPPT systems. Simulation and experiment results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can track the global maximum power point (MPP) swiftly and reliably with higher accuracy under various conditions.

This study aims to develop a fully passive smart sensing tag utilizing RF (Radio Frequency) energy harvesting technology at UHF (Ultra High Frequency) band of 915MHz. To optimize the power collected under various radiated conditions, an efficient energy harvesting module exploiting a boost circuit with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is employed. Specifically, the proposed tag features two orthogonal antennas to enhance its capability of both energy scavenging and data transmissions. The experimental result shows that the developed smart sensor tag can scavenge an RF input power of as low as 0.19mW at a distance of 4 meters for a 3.6Vdc output. Furthermore, the proposed smart sensor tag performs the feasibility of completely autonomous monitoring food freshness at 2 meters with a low-power sensor array.
The importance of ESS has been emphasized due to stabilization of power demand due to deterioration of network reliability and expansion of renewable energy sources. ESS (Energy Storage System) stores the remaining power and uses it when necessary to meet the power demand, and build the ESS system mainly in conjunction with solar and wind power. In this paper, we propose a home PV Charging Module using the Master-Slave method which is effective for low insolation. After designing the module, Fast MPPT algorithm is applied to generate the maximum output from the nonlinear output characteristics of the PV modules. The average power value for the input of PV Charging Module was 296.90 W and the output power was 289.60 W, which averaged 97.54%.

An Off grid or remote solar electric systems are an energy supply to our home or to our companies without the utility of Grid at all. Off grid solar systems are very important for those who live in remote locations especially for developing countries where getting the electric grid is extremely expensive, inconvenient or for those who doesn't need to pay a monthly bill with the electric bill in general. The main critical components of any solar power system or renewable energy harvesting systems are the energy storage systems and its charge controller system. Energy storage systems are the essential integral part of a solar energy harvesting system and in general for all renewable energy harvesting systems. To provide an optimal solution of both high power density and high energy density at the same time we have to use hybrid energy storage systems (HESS), that combine two or more energy storage technologies with complementary characteristics. In this present work, design and simulation we use two storage systems supercapacitor for high power density and lithium based battery for high energy density. Here the system incorporates fast-response supercapacitors to provide power to manage solar smoothing and uses a battery for load shifting. On this paper discuss that the total energy throughout of the battery is much reduced and the typical thermal stresses caused by high discharge rate responses are mitigated by integrating supercapacitors with the battery storage system. In addition of the above discussion the off grid solar electric energy harvesting presented in this research paper includes battery and supercapacitor management system, MPPT (maximum power point tracking) system and back/boost convertors. On this present work the entire model of off grid electric energy harvesting system and all other functional blocks of that system is implemented in MATLAB Simulink.
