  • Objectives : This study was conducted for objective verification of effects of spiral taping therapy for the patients with motor disturbance. Methods : To verify whether spiral taping therapy is effective for treating motor disturbance from cervical sprain, 28 patients were randomly allocated into the control and experiment groups. Then 23 subjects who fulfilled the experiment requirements were measured for lateral rotation angle using the goniometer. Changes in rotation were observed and compared. Control group received acupuncture and herbal acupuncture treatment, whileas the experiment group received spiral taping therapy in addition. Results : Differences in age and the degree of motor disturbance were disregarded in comparison of the groups prior to rendering treatments. For the control group, significant changes were observed after the second treatment until the termination of treatment. For the experiment group, significant changes were observed after the first treatment until the termination of treatment. Difference between the groups was insignificant but experiment group with spiral taping therapy showed better results. Conclusion : Spiral taping therapy can be an effective complementary treatment method for treating neck motor disturbance. Further studies in the subject should be conducted to yield more concrete verification.

  • Choosing an auspicious day originated from cosmobiological concepts which were prevalent in traditional society. This method was devised to minimize the damage and maximize the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion. It is found in most of Asian traditional medicine and still regarded as important in Tibet. In Korea, historical records show that various rules were applied to make certain pills, enhance physical condition, avoid illness and to get medical care. Strict rules were also applied to avoid inauspicious days when using acupuncture and moxibustion. But this tradition lost chance of proper evaluation due to involuntary and rapid westernization. Chimgutaekilpyonjip was published in early Chosun dynasty collecting almost all existing methods from the Huangdineijing to Sung-Chin-Yuan medicine. DonguiBogam Yirimchalyo and Chimgukyunghumbang succeeded these methods in separate ways. But they are similar at particular points. In many clinical cases of Seungjeongwonilgi, most methods written in DonguiBogam were used to choose auspicious days, In this study, the characteristic of Chimgutaekilpyonjip and other medical texts of Chosun are compared by analyzing the contents regarding choosing an auspicious day. Secondly, clinical records of Seungjeongwonilgi are examined to assess their practical use. Studying and evaluating the past theories could help accelerate the procedure of setting a proper standard in our times.

Methods: Key words "Obesity", "Menopause", "Herb medicine", "Acupuncture", "Moxibustion", "Catgut embedding" were searched on 9 database systems (PubMed Central, Cochrane Controlled Register of Trials, Embase, China Academic Journals, Korean Traditional Knowledge Portal, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System, Korean Studies Information Service System, National Digital Science Library, DBpia) on April 30th 2019. Results: 1 case report and 17 clinical trials were collected in accordance with the selection and exclusion criteria. Among the 17 trials, 6 were randomized controlled trials, 1 was controlled clinical trial, and 10 were single-arm trials. The types of intervention were herb medicine, electroacupuncture, acupuncture, auricular acupuncture, warm needle acupuncture, moxibustion, laser acupuncture, and catgut embedding. The study design, study results and method of intervention were analyzed. Conclusions: 1 case report described the effectiveness of pharmacopuncture, 4 trials described the effectiveness of herbal medicine, 2 of electroacupuncture, 1 of laser acupuncture, and 2 of catgut embedding. Among the 17 trials, 2 studies showed that herbal medicine treatment was more effective than no treatment or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and 1 study showed that electroacupuncture was more effective than hormone therapy. All of 18 selected studies reported the effectiveness of weight reduction and abdominal obesity reduction after the traditional Korean medicine treatment for obesity in menopausal women.

  • This study examined the perception of the royal family and scholars, focusing on the records of the royal family and literary collections in the late Joseon Dynasty, and attempted to present the process of accepting this content in Korea through domestic and foreign medical documents and other literature. The perception of this content in the late Joseon Dynasty can be said to be a characteristic to the history of acupuncture and moxibustion in the Joseon period. This seems to have occurred after the middle of the Joseon Dynasty, when both acupuncture and medicine were commonly performed on the king. This content was generally recognized by Joseon's scholars because it had been in books read by the scholars before it was mentioned directly in the medical book. Korean medical books were influenced by Uihakyimmun, and this content continued steadily in various medical books. Since the books containing this content were test subjects for the medical exam, it can be assumed that they were generally accepted by doctors in the late Joseon Dynasty.
