Practical Use Technology for Robot Control in BCI Environment based on Motor Imagery-P300 (동작 상상-P300 기반 BCI 환경에서의 로봇 제어 실용화 기술)

  • BCI (Brain Computer Interface) is technology to control external devices by measuring the brain activity, such as electroencephalogram (EEG), so that handicapped people communicate with environment physically using the technology. Among them, EEG is widely used in various fields, especially robot agent control by using several signal response characteristics, such as P300, SSVEP (Steady-State Visually Evoked Potential) and motor imagery. However, in order to control the robot agent without any constraint and precisely, it should take advantage of not only a signal response characteristic, but also combination. In this paper, we try to use the fusion of motor imagery and P300 from EEG for practical use of robot control in BCI environment. The results of experiments are confirmed that the recognition rate decreases compared with the case of using one kind of features, whereas it is able to classify each both characteristics and the practical use technology based on mobile robot and wireless BCI measurement system is implemented.

  • Brain Computer Interface (BCI) is a communication pathway between devices (computers) and human brain. It treats brain signals in real-time basis and discriminates some information of what human brain is doing. In this work, we develop a EEG BCI system using a feature extraction such as common spatial pattern (CSP) and a classifier using Fisher linear discriminant analysis (FLDA). Two-class EEG motor imagery movement datasets with both cued and uncued are tested to verify its feasibility.

A Comparative Analysis of Motor Imagery, Execution, and Observation for Motor Imagery-based Brain-Computer Interface (움직임 상상 기반 뇌-컴퓨터 인터페이스를 위한 운동 심상, 실행, 관찰 뇌파 비교 분석)

  • Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a technology that allows users with motor disturbance to control machines by brainwaves without a physical controller. Motor imagery (MI)-BCI is one of the popular BCI techniques, but it needs a long calibration time for users to perform a mental task that causes high fatigue to the users. MI is reported as showing a similar neural mechanism as motor execution (ME) and motor observation (MO). However, integrative investigations of these three tasks are rarely conducted. In this study, we propose a new paradigm that incorporates three tasks (MI, ME, and MO) and conducted a comparative analysis. For this study, we collected Electroencephalograms (EEG) of motor imagery/execution/observation from 28 healthy subjects and investigated alpha event-related (de)synchronization (ERD/ERS) and classification accuracy (left vs. right motor tasks). As result, we observed ERD and ERS in MI, MO and ME although the timing is different across tasks. In addition, the MI showed strong ERD on the contralateral hemisphere, while the MO showed strong ERD on the ipsilateral side. In the classification analysis using a Riemannian geometry-based classifier, we obtained classification accuracies as MO (66.34%), MI (60.06%) and ME (58.57%). We conclude that there are similarities and differences in fundamental neural mechanisms across the three motor tasks and that these results could be used to advance the current MI-BCI further by incorporating data from ME and MO.

  • In this study, we evaluated the EEG based BCI algorithm using common spatial pattern to find realistic applicability using neurofeedback EEG based BCI algorithm - EEG mode, feature vector calculation, the number of selected channels, 3 types of classifier, window size is evaluated for 10 subjects. The experimental results have been evaluated depending on conditioned experiment whether neurofeedback is used or not In case of using neurofeedback, a few subjects presented exceptional but general tendency presented the performance improvement Through this study, we found a motivation of development for the specific classifier based BCI system and the assessment evaluation system. We proposed a need for an optimized algorithm applicable to the robust motor imagery evaluation system with more useful functionalities.

  • Among several technologies related to human brain, Brain Computer Interface (BCI) system is one of the most notable technologies recently. Conventional BCI for direct communication between human brain and machine are discomfort because normally electroencephalograghy(EEG) signal is measured by using multichannel EEG sensor. In this study, we propose 2-channel EEG sensor-based application control system which is more convenience and low complexity to wear to get EEG signal. EEG sensor module and system algorithm used in this study are developed and designed and one of the BCI methods, Motor Imagery (MI) is implemented in the system. Experiments are consisted of accuracy measurement of MI classification and driving control test. The results show that our simple wearable system has comparable performance with studies using multi-channel EEG sensor-based system, even better performance than other studies.

  • In this paper we present a method of feature extraction for motor imagery single trial EEG classification, where we exploit nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) to select discriminative features in the time-frequency representation of EEG. Experimental results with motor Imagery EEG data in BCI competition 2003. show that the method indeed finds meaningful EEG features automatically, while some existing methods should undergo cross-validation to find them.

Performance Evaluation of EEG-BCI Interface Algorithm in BCI(Brain Computer Interface)-Naive Subjects (뇌컴퓨터접속(BCI) 무경험자에 대한 EEG-BCI 알고리즘 성능평가)

  • The Performance research about EEG-BCI algorithm in BCI-naive subjects is very important for evaluating the applicability to the public. We analyzed the result of the performance evaluation experiment about the EEG-BCI algorithm in BCI-naive subjects on three different aspects. The EEG-BCI algorithm used in this paper is composed of the common spatial pattern(CSP) and the least square linear classifier. CSP is used for obtaining the characteristic of event related desynchronization, and the least square linear classifier classifies the motor imagery EEG data of the left hand or right hand. The performance evaluation experiments about EEG-BCI algorithm is conducted for 40 men and women whose age are 23.87${\pm}$2.47. The performance evaluation about EEG-BCI algorithm in BCI-naive subjects is analyzed in terms of the accuracy, the relation between the information transfer rate and the accuracy, and the performance changes when the different types of cue were used in the training session and testing session. On the result of experiment, BCI-naive group has about 20% subjects whose accuracy exceed 0.7. And this results of the accuracy were not effected significantly by the types of cue. The Information transfer rate is in the inverse proportion to the accuracy. And the accuracy shows the severe deterioration when the motor imagery is less then 2 seconds.

  • Recent advances in computer science enabled people with severe motor disabilities to use brain-computer interfaces (BCI) for communication, control, and even to restore their motor disabilities. This paper reviews the most recent works of BCI in stroke rehabilitation with a focus on methodology that reported on data collected from stroke patients and clinical studies that reported on the motor improvements of stroke patients. Both types of studies are important as the former advances the technology of BCI for stroke, and the latter demonstrates the clinical efficacy of BCI in stroke. Finally some challenges are discussed.

  • 이 논문에서는 최근 활발히 연구되고 있는 BCI 실험에서 센서 위치의 변화에 따른 정확도 감소를 줄이는 방법을 알아본다. 이를 위해 특징추출 방법에서 많이 사용되는 두 가지 방법 (Power Spectrum Density, Phase Lock Value) 을 비교 및 평가 한다. motor imagery BCI 실험 결과 phase정보를 이용하는 Phase Lock Value가 달라지는 센서 위치에 덜 민감하다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
