The design, construction and performance test of a convenient multi-purpose irradiator is described. A multi-purpose irradiator using Cesium-137 has been developed for studies of low dose radiation effects in biology and for calibration of Thermo Luminescent dosimeter(TLD). During the operation, three rods of radioactive material which are 10cm in length revolve 180 degrees and irradiate biological samples, or TLD, and return to their shielded position, after the programmed time. A programmable Logic Controller(PLC) controls the sequence of operation, interlock, motor rotation and safety system. The rotation speed of biological samples can vary up to 20 RPM. A real time monitoring system was also incorporated to check and control the operation status of the irradiator. The capacity of the irradiation chamber was 4.5 liters. The isodose distribution at arbitrary vertical planes was measured by using film dosimetry. The dose-rate was 0.13 cGy/min in air and 0.11 cGy/min in water equivalent material in the case of Cesium-137. Range of activity was 2 Ci. The homogeneity of dose distribution in the chamber was ${\pm}$7%. The actual radiation level on the surface was within permissible levels. The irradiator had a maximum 0.35 mR/min radiation leakage on its surface.

The objective of this study is to design and manufacture a fuel pump with the plunger diameter of 4 mm and stroke of 7 mm that can be mounted in a small single-cylinder four-stroke agricultural diesel engine, and to investigate the performance characteristics of the pump. The combustion pressure in a cylinder was reproduced by forming the back pressure of 1, 6, 11, 16 and 21 bar with a nitrogen gas in the home-manufactured modeling cylinder. In the experiment, the discharge pressure was measured at the spot of 1 cm away from the discharge port of a developed fuel pump. The delivery pressure and delivery flow rate were measured at the spot of 30 cm away from the discharge port of the pump, and the pump efficiency was calculated. The pump motor speed was changed from 600 to 800, 1000, 1200 and 1400 rpm. It is found that the delivery feed rate of fuel pump is increased as the rotational speed is raised, and is decreased as the back pressure, compression pressure in the cylinder, is increased. Also, the pump efficiency is reduced as the rotational speed and back pressure are increased.
This study was conducted to develop the semi-crawler type mini-forwarder that can be operated comfortable small-scale logging operation in the steep terrain and also used at a variety of operations such as the civil work in erosion control and forest-road. Considering the minimum turning radius and the width of forest operation road, the total length, width and loading capacity of the semi-crawler type mini-forwarder is 5,750 mm, 1,900 mm and $2.5m^{3}$, respectively. The maximum engine power is 96ps at 3600 rpm. Selected hydraulic pumps are consists of two main pumps and two sub-main pumps. Main hydraulic pumps are utilized to running motor of the front wheel and rear crawler. Sub-main pumps are utilized to the actuation parts such as steering, crane, out-rigger and dump cylinder. The transmission was adapted as the HST (Hydro-Static Transmission) system. The driving parts are designed and manufactured as the front wheel type and the rear crawler type. The steering type was manufactured as the ackerman type. Driving control parts type was designed and manufactured as driver's seat type of normal cars. It is also attached on auxiliary equipments such as winch, log grapple and out-rigger. The traveling speed of the semi-crawler type mini-forwarder in forest road was 5.3 km/hr to 7.7 km/hr.
A scaled version of a roller rig is developed to demonstrate the dynamic characteristics of a railway vehicle for academic purposes. This rig is designed based on Jaschinski's similarity law. It is scaled to 1/10 of actual size and allows 9-DOF motion to examine the up and down vibration of a train set. The test rig consists of three sub-hardware components: (i) a driving roller mechanism with a three-phase AC motor and an inverter, (ii) a bogie structure with first and second suspensions, and (iii) the vehicle body. The motor of the rig is capable of 3,600rpm, allowing the test to simulate a vehicle up to a maximum speed of 400Km/hr. Because bearings and joints are properly connected to the sub-structures, various motion analyses, such as a lateral, pitching, and yawing motion, are allowed. The slip motion between the rail and the wheel set is also monitored by several sensors mounted in the rig. After the construction of the hardware, an experiment is conducted to obtain the natural frequencies of the dynamic behavior of the specimen. First, the test rig is run and data are collected from six sets of accelerometers. Then, a numerical analysis of the model based on the ADAMS program is derived. Finally, the measurement data of the first three fundamental frequencies are compared to the analytical result and the validation of the test rig is conducted. The results show that the developed roller rig provides good accuracy in simulating the dynamic behavior of the vehicle motion. Although the roller rig designed in this paper is intended for academia, it can easily be implemented as part of a dynamic experiment of a bogie and a vehicle body for a high-speed train as part of the research efforts in this area.

Minimizing the cylinder wear and the consumption rate of cylinder oil in a large two-stroke diesel engine is of great economic importance. A motor-driven cylinder lubricator for Sulzer RT-flex large two-stroke diesel engines developed by authors is in need of improving the lubricating system to lubricate cylinder parts optimally by an electronically controlled quill device according to changes of engine load and revolution speed. In order to apply the developed accumulating distributor to an integrated cylinder lubricator by the electronically controlled system as the third research stage, the lubricating system is improved in the electronically controlled quill device with a solenoid valve. In this study, the effects of lubricator revolution speed, driving pressure(or plunger stroke) and cylinder back pressure on oil feed rate and lubrication inequality rate are investigated by using the integrated cylinder lubricator system with an accumulated distribution by the electronic control(I.C.S.), and the oil feed rate and lubrication inequality rate of I.C.S. are compared with those of the motor-driven cylinder lubricator by the electronically controlled quill system equipped with an accumulating distributor(E.D.S.). It is found that the oil feed rate of I.C.S. is smaller than that of E.D.S. due to the reduction of delivery velocity by the higher delivery pressure, and the variances of lubrication inequality rate for I.C.S. have become smaller than those of E.D.S. as the driving pressure in all experimental conditions increases, except for the driving pressure of 26 bar(plunger stroke 2 mm) at the cylinder lubricator speed of 120 rpm.
The paper presents the rotordynamic performance measurements and model predictions of a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) air compressor supported on gas foil bearings (GFBs). The rotor has an impeller on one end and a thrust runner on the other end. The front (impeller side) and rear (thrust side) gas foil journal bearings (GFJBs) are located between the impeller and thrust runner to support the radial loads, and a pair of gas foil thrust bearings are located on both sides of the thrust runner to support the axial loads. The test GFJBs have a partial arc shim foil installed between the top foil and bump strip layers to enhance hydrodynamic pressure generation. During the rotordynamic performance tests, two sets of orthogonally installed eddy-current displacement sensors measure the rotor radial motions at the rotor impeller and thrust ends. A series of speed-up and coast-down tests to 100k rpm demonstrates the dominant synchronous (1X) rotor responses to imbalance masses without noticeable subsynchronous motions, which indicates a rotordynamically stable rotor-GFB system. Finite element analysis of the rotor determines the rotor free-free (bending) natural modes and frequencies well beyond the maximum rotating frequency. The predicted damped natural frequencies and damping ratios of the rotor-GFB system reveal rotordynamic stability over the speeds of interest. The imbalance response predictions show that the predicted critical speeds and rotor amplitudes strongly agree with the test measurements, thus validating the developed rotordynamic model.

An experimental investigation of an early injection strategy was conducted on a small single cylinder common-rail DI diesel engine to reduce the oxides of nitrogen($NO_x$) emission. The main objectives of this study were to investigate the emissions, performance and combustion characteristics in a diesel engine with early and two-stage injections. The two- stage injection was conducted to reduce the wall-wetting of early injected fuels on the cylinder wall or to promote the ignition of premixed charge. The engine test was performed at conditions of 1500rpm, injection timing ranging from TDC to BTDC $80^{\circ}$. The experimental results show that $NO_x$ emissions were decreased in both cases of early injection and two stage injection compared to the conventional diesel combustion by the near TDC injection. However, soot and products of incomplete products (i.e. HC and CO) are slightly increased. Also, the second injection near TDC promoted the ignition of premixed fuel, therefore, IMEP was increased.

In high-density hard disk drives, the slider should be made to fly close to the magnetic recording disk to generate better signal resolution and at an increasingly high velocity to achieve better data rate. The slider disk interaction in CSS (contact-start-stop) mode is an important source of particle generation. Contamination particles in the hard disk drive can cause serious problems including slider crash and thermal asperities. We investigated the number and the sizes of particles generated in the hard disk drive, operating at increasing disk rotational speeds, in the CSS mode. CNC (condensation nucleus counter) and PSS (particle size selector) were used for this investigation. In addition, we examined the particle components by using SEM (scanning electron microscopes), AES (auger electron spectroscopy), and TOF-SIMS (time of flight-secondary ions mass spectrometry). The increasing disk rotational speed directly affected the particle generation by slider disk interaction. The number of particles that were generated increased with the disk rotational speed. The particle generation rate increased rapidly at motor speeds above 8000 rpm. This increase may be due to the increased slider disk interaction. Particle sizes ranged from 14 to 200 nm. The particles generated by slider disk interaction came from the lubricant on the disk, coating layer of the disk, and also slider surface.
Hot air heater with light oil combustion is used as the most common heater for greenhouse heating in the winter season. Hot air heaters of 256,246 units have been supplied as main greenhouse heating equipment until 2008 and greenhouse heating cost has reached to 620 billions won in Korea. In order to improve the thermal efficiency of the hot air heater and to reduce the expenses for greenhouse heating, prototype hot air heater was manufactured and tested in this experiment. The heat exchanger of tested prototype hot air heater was circular and hexagonal pipe type and inline and stagger arrangement type. Capacity of the heating was 43,062 kJ/h and total heat transfer area of the heat exchanger was $10.728\;m^2$. According to the performance test, it could supply heat of 38,240 to 35,100 kJ/h depending on the fan motor speed of 1,740~1,220 rpm, respectively. Thermal efficiency of hot air heater was 87.0% to 80.8% in the same conditions. As a result, thermal efficiency of hot air heater with hexagonal pipe-stagger arrangement heat exchanger developed in this study was higher 10.2% than that of conventional hot air heater and heating energy saving rate of 14.3% increased.
Separation of particles based on different sizes, detection of pathogenic bacteria and isolation of leukocytes from whole blood are typical applications of spiral or helical microchannels. The present study focuses on developing a CD4+ T-cell counting device for monitoring HIV/AIDS patients with the aid of a helical minichannel used for a sample cartridge. For the experiment, $10{\mu}m$ sized microbeads were used for visualization with a fluorescence imaging system. Alignment of microbeads was investigated in a stationary and spinning sample cartridge filled with glycerol-water mixtures of different densities. The helical minichannel was spun using a DC motor controlled by an Arduino board with a Bluetooth shield. It was found that when the sample cartridge was made stationary, no bead alignment was achieved for a medium with density (0% and 20% glycerol) lower than that of the beads, but when it was spun at 2000-3000 rpm for 1-4 min, an alignment was obtained at the top of the channel facilitating optical detection and enumeration of those microbeads. Since an alignment of microbeads was achieved for a medium with density as that of blood plasma, the same approach can be applied for aligning and counting CD4+ T-lymphocytes in whole blood samples collected from patients.
