  • Motion Estimation is an essential module in video encoders based on international standards such as H.263 and MPEG. Many fast motion estimation algorithms have been proposed in order to reduce the computational complexity of a well-known full search algorithms(FS). However, these fast algorithms can not work efficiently in DSP processors recently developed for video processing. To solve for this. we propose an efficient motion estimation scheme optimized in the DSP processor like Philips TM1300. A motion vector predictor is pre-estimated and a small search range is chosen in the proposed scheme using strong motion vector correlation between a current macro block (MB) and its neighboring MB's to reduce computation time. An MPEG-4 SP@L3(Simple Profile at Level 3) encoding system is implemented in Philips TM1300 to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. In that processor, we can achieve better performance using our method than other conventional ones while keeping visual quality as good as that of the FS.

  • Motion Estimation(ME) has been developed to reduce the redundant data in digital video signal. ME is an important part of video encoding system, However, it requires huge computational complexity of the encoder part, and fast motion search methods have been proposed to reduce huge complexity. Multi- view video is obtained by capturing on a three-dimensional scene with many cameras at different positions and its complexity increases in proportion to the number of cameras. In this paper, we proposed an efficient motion method which chooses a search pattern adaptively by using the temporal-spatial correlation of the block and the characteristics of the block. Experiment results show that the computational complexity reduction of the proposed method over TZ search method and FS method can be up to 70~75% and 99% respectively while keeping similar image quality and bit rates.

  • The correlation search method yields velocity information by tracking scatter patterns between medical image frames. The displacement vector between a target region and the best correlated search region indicates the magnitude and direction of the inter-frame motion of that particular region. However, if the noise sources in the target region and the search region are correlated Gaussian, then the cross-correlation technique fails to work well because it estimates the cross-correlation of both signals and noises. In this paper we develop a new correlation search method which seeks the best correlated third-order statistics between a target and the search region to suppress the effect of correlated Gaussian noise sources. Our new method yields better estimations of velocity than the conventional cross-correlation method.

  • By modeling the block matching algorithm as a function of the correlation of image blocks, we derive search patterns for fast block matching motion estimation. The proposed approach provides an analytical support lot the diamond-shape search pattern, which is widely used in fast block matching algorithms. We also propose a new fast motion estimation algorithm using adaptive search patterns and statistical properties of the object displacement. In order to select an appropriate search pattern, we exploit the relationship between the motion vector and the block differences. By changing the search pattern adaptively, we improve motion prediction accuracy while reducing required computational complexity compared to other fast block matching algorithms.

  • There is the temporal correlation of the video sequence between the motion vector of current block and the motion vector of the previous block. If we can obtain useful and enough information from the motion vector of the same coordinate block of the previous frame, the total number of search points used to find the motion vector of the current block may be reduced significantly. In this paper, we propose the block-matching motion estimation using an adaptive initial search point by the predicted motion information from the same block of the previous frame. And the first search point of the proposed algorithm is moved an initial point on the location of being possibility and the searching process after moving the first search point is processed according to the fast search pattern. Simulation results show that PSNR(Peak-to-Signal Noise Ratio) values are improved UP to the 1.05dB as depend on the image sequences and improved about 0.33~0.37dB on an average. Search times are reduced about 29~97% than the other fast search algorithms. Simulation results also show that the performance of the proposed scheme gives better subjective picture quality than the other fast search algorithms and is closer to that of the FS(Full Search) algorithm.

  • In general, the swing motion of the crane is controlled and suppressed by activating the trolley motion. In many papers reported by us, we suggested a new type of anti-sway control system of the crane. In the proposed control system, a small auxiliary mass(moving-mass) is installed on the spreader and the swing motion is controlled by moving the auxiliary mass. The actuator reaction against the auxiliary mass applies inertial control forces to the container in order to reduce the swing motion in the desired manner. The measuring system is based on laser sensor or others. However it is not so useful in real world. Especially, in this paper, the image sensor is used to measures the motions of the spreader and the measured data are fed back to the controller in real time. The applied image processing technique is a kind of robust template matching method which is named Vector Code Correlation (VCC) and devised to consider the real environmental conditions. And the $H_{\infty}$ based control technique is applied to suppress swing motion of the crane. And the experimental result shows that the proposed measurement system based on image sensor and control system is useful and robust to disturbances.

  • FRUC (Frame Rate Up-Conversion) technique needs an effective frame interpolation algorithm using motion information between adjacent neighboring frames. In order to have good visual qualities in the interpolated frames, it is necessary to develop an effective detection and interpolation algorithms for occluded regions. For this aim, this paper proposes an effective occluded region detection algorithm through the adaptive forward and backward motion searches and also by introducing the minimum value of normalized cross-correlation coefficient (NCCC). That is, the proposed scheme looks for the location with the minimum sum of absolute differences (SAD) and this value is compared to that of the location with the maximum value of NCCC based on the statistics of those relations. And, these results are compared with the size of motion vector and then the proposed algorithm decides whether the given block is the occluded region or not. Furthermore, once the occluded regions are classified, then this paper proposes an adaptive interpolation algorithm for occluded regions, which still exist in the merged frame, by using the neighboring pixel information and the available data in the occluded block. Computer simulations show that the proposed algorithm can effectively classify the occluded region, compared to the conventional SAD-based method and the performance of the proposed interpolation algorithm has better PSNR than the conventional algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast Motion Estimation (ME) algorithm for low computational complexity based on spatial correlations. The proposed algorithm uses the motion vector of neighboring blocks, to decide the location of initial searching point. The number of searching point decreases by changing the location of initial searching point. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm reduces searching points about $7{\sim}13%$ and increases PSNR about $0.1{\sim}0.5$(dB) compared with conventional algorithm.

  • Multi-view video is obtained by capturing one three-dimensional scene with many cameras at different positions. Multi-view video coding requires high computational complexity. To reduce computational complexity and maintain the image quality, an effective early termination motion estimation method is proposed in this paper. The proposed method exploiting the characteristic of motion vector distribution uses a hierarchical search strategy. This strategy method consists of multi-grid square search pattern, modified diamond search pattern, small diamond search pattern and raster search pattern. Experiment results show that the speedup improvement of the proposed method over TZ search method and FS(Full Search) method JMVC (Joint Multiview Video Coding) can be up to 1.7~4.5 times and 90 times faster respectively while maintaining similar video quality and bit rates.
