The motion response of a ship moored in a rectangular harbor excited by long waves has been studied theoretically and experimentally. Experiments are performed in a shallow basin. A ship model is set moored by soft springs at various positions in a model harbor subjected to regular waves with period ranging from 2 to 3 seconds. Wave and ship responses are measured and compared with theory. It is found that theoretical results agree qualitatively with experimental results. The main source of quantitative discrepancies is presumably due to real fluid effects such as separation at the harbor entrance and friction on harbor boundaries.
A vessel/mooring/riser coupled dynamic analysis program in time domain is developed for the global motion simulation of a turret-moored, tanker based FPSO designed for 6000-ft water depth. The vessel global motions and mooring tension are simulated for the non-parallel wind-wave-current 100-year hurricane condition in the Gulf of Mexico. The wind and current forces and moments are estimated from the OCIMF empirical data base for the given loading condition. The numerical results are compared with the OTRC(Offshore Technology Research Center: Model Basin for Offshore Platforms in Texas A&M University) 1:60 model-testing results with truncated mooring system. The system's stiffness and line tension as well as natural periods and damping obtained from the OTRC measurement are checked through numerically simulated static-offset and free-decay tests. The global vessel motion simulations in the hurricane condition were conducted by varying lateral and longitudinal hull drag coefficients, different mooring and riser set up, and wind-exposed areas to better understand the sensitivity of the FPSO responses against empirical parameters. It is particularly stressed that the dynamic mooring tension can be greatly underestimated when truncated mooring system is used.
A semi-submersible drilling rig is regarded as one of the typical offshore structures operated in the field with moderate environments such as the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, and West Africa. Its typical roll and pitch natural periods are around 30 seconds, which avoids prevailing regions of the wave energy spectrum, and their responses in waves are quite acceptable for common operation conditions. But large roll and pitch motions can be induced by wave difference frequency energy spectrum if the metacentric heights of a semi-submersible decrease to small values in some loading conditions, and it is because the roll and pitch natural periods increase and approach to the region where the spectral density of the low frequency wave drift moment has significant value. This paper describes the low frequency roll motion of a semi-submersible that are excited by the wave 2nd order difference frequency energy by a series of model experiments. From the model tests with several different initial metacentric heights (GM), it was observed that a semi-submersible can experience large roll motion due to the wave group spectrum.
The simulation of motion responses of a dolphin-moored ocean structure in shallow water when it cllides with a ship, has been carried out. The equation of motion in the time domain according to Cummin's theory is employed, and solved by making use of the Newmark-${\beta}$ method. The added mass and damping coefficients involved in the equations are abtained from a three-dimensional panel method in the frequency domain. The impact forces due to ship collision are calculated using both the elastic and non-elastic modelings. The mooring forces for dolphin systems of ocean structure are regarded as linear spring forces.
As the offshore oil fields are moved to the deep ocean, the oil production system of FPSO(Floating Production Storage and Offloading System) Type are constructed frequently these days. So, it is very important to estimate the drift motion and damping effects due to the drift motion simultaneously. The components of slow drift motion damping consist of viscous, wave radiation effect and wave drift damping. It is needed to estimate the wave drift damping more accurately than others. The wave drift damping signifies the time-rate of mean wave drift force on oscillating ship or ocean structure which constant speed. In order to calculate this, the 3-Dimensional panel method is employed with the translating and pulsating Green function in the frequency domain. The calculation is carried out for a Series 60 ($C_B$/=0.7) and the results are compared with other numerical ones.
Recently moored offshore vessels like as FPSO(Floating Production Storage Offloading) are frequently deployed in seas for a long time. For successful operation, the motion behavior of such a vessel in waves must be clarified in advance either theoretically or experimentally. It is of particular interest to examine the behavior, when swells are superposed to seas with different incident angle. Such a situation is actually reported in some offshore oilfield. In this paper, the motion of a FPSO in irregular waves including swells is studied in time domain. Hydrodynamic coefficients and wave forces are calculated in frequency domain using three-dimensional singularity distribution method. Time memory function and added mass at infinite frequency are derived by Fourier transform utilizing hydrodynamic damping coefficients. In the process, the numerical accuracy of added mass at infinite frequency is carefully examined in association with free decay simulations. It is found from numerical simulations that swells significantly affect the vertical motion of FPSO mainly because of their longer period compared to the ordinary sea waves. In particular, the roll motion is largely amplified because the dominant period of swell is closer to the roll natural period than that of seas.

This paper presents the design for the kinematic structure of a system for an automatically moored 6000 ton autonomous ship in a port, and the process and results of optimal design for the link cross-sectional shape. We propose an automatic mooring system with a PPP type serial manipulator structure capable of linear motion in the XYZ axis. The mooring force applied by the mooring system was derived with dynamics simulation tool "ADAMS". The design goal is the minimization of the cross-sectional area of the link. Constrains include compressive stress and shear stress. The optimization problems were solved by using the sequential quadratic programing method implemented in the fmincon package. The shape of the cross section was assumed to be rectangle. Through future research, we plan to manufacture automatic mooring system for 6000ton class autonomous ship.
During the loading/offloading operation of a liquefied natural gas carrier (LNGC) that is moored in a side-by-side configuration with an offshore plant, sloshing that occurs due to the partially filled LNG tank and the interactive effect between the two floating bodies are important factors that affect safety and operability. Therefore, a time-domain software program, called CHARM3D, was developed to consider the interactions between sloshing and the motion of a floating body, as well as the interactions between multiple bodies using the potential-viscous hybrid method. For the simulation of a floating body in the time domain, hydrodynamic coefficients and wave forces were calculated in the frequency domain using the 3D radiation/diffraction panel program based on potential theory. The calculated values were used for the simulation of a floating body in the time domain by convolution integrals. The liquid sloshing in the inner tanks is solved by the 3D-FDM Navier-Stokes solver that includes the consideration of free-surface non-linearity through the SURF scheme. The computed sloshing forces and moments were fed into the time integration of the ship's motion, and the updated motion was, in turn, used as the excitation force for liquid sloshing, which is repeated for the ensuing time steps. For comparison, a sloshing motion coupled analysis program based on linear potential theory in the frequency domain was developed. The computer programs that were developed were applied to the side-by-side offloading operation between the offshore plant and the LNGC. The frequency-domain results reproduced the coupling effects qualitatively, but, in general, the peaks were over-predicted compared to experimental and time-domain results. The interactive effects between the sloshing liquid and the motion of the vessel can be intensified further in the case of multiple floating bodies.

The motion response of a ship moored in a rectangular harbor excited by long waves has been studied theoretically and experimentally. Within the framework of potential theory, matched asymptotic expansion techniques are exployed to analyze the problem. The fluid domain is divided into the ocean and the harbor regions for the analysis of wave response in a harbor without ship. The wave responses in both the ocean and the harbor sides are solved first independently in terms of Green's functions, which are the solutions of the Helmholtz equation satisfying appropriate boundary conditions. Slender body approximations are used to obtain the velocity jumps across the ship, which are associated with the symmetric motion modes of the ship. Unknowns contained in each solution are finally determined by matching at an intermediate zone between two neighboring regions. Theoretical results predict the ship motion qualitatively well. The main source of quantitative discrepancies is presumably due to real fluid effects such as separation at the harbor entrance and friction on harbor boundaries.
Recently, since there are several problems in space, the infra-structure and the facilities in the contiguity of the existing harbors due to the trend of enlarging the container capacity of the large container vessel, a special floating platform named as the Mobile Harbor has been proposed conceptually as an effective solution of those problems. Two kinds of hull shapes, a conventional mono-hull type and a catamaran type, are proposed as midway feeders to transfer containers to the harbor on land from a large container ship on near shore. In this study, the motion response and mooring analysis are carried out for comparing the global performance of two types of Mobile Harbor. Robot arm mooring facility specially is devised and newly tried to use for the safe fixation of a large container ship and the Mobile Harbor on near shore. It would be expected for this comparison study to give a guideline to design the efficient hull form for a midway loader.
