Various difficulties and inconveniences arise from having a mentally handicapped child in a family and these place many demands on mothers. There are few studies in Korea on these demands nor on what mothers go through with their mentally handicapped daughters' menarche and puberty. The purpose of the study was to examine the experiences of mothers of mentally handicapped daughters, as it relates to their daughters' menarche and the beginning of puberty. With indepth interviews, both in person and by telephone and participant observation the study used a qualitative research methodology to attempt to understand the experiences of these mothers. The data were gathered from October 1995 to April 1996. The subjects for the research included nine mothers of mentally handicapped daughters whose ages ranged from 12 to 18 and who attended one of three special schools located in either Inchon or Seoul. The data were recorded and analyzed : meaningful statements were grouped according to subjects raised by the mothers. Content Analysis was also applied to identify similar content and confirm common experiences. and to highlight concepts and categorized them. The results of this study are as follows. Five categories were identified : mothers' emotional responses to their mentally handicapped daughters' menarche and menstration were of severe despair accompanied by anxiety, guilt, fear, anguish, shame and pity because the mothers were afraid their daughters would not be able to use appropriate hygienic measures during menstration and the mothers felt heavily burdened in having to look them. The mothers also had negative feelings about their daughters' physical development. The experience of mothers related to their daughters' possibilities for marriage and pregnancy were of powerlessness, distress, withdrawal, fear. pity and desperation and they were afraid that their daughters might be violated sexually. The mothers rejected the possibility of marriage and pregnancy for their daughters and instead planned very restricting futures for them. The mothers used various coping methods to bring meaning to their lives. Because the negative emotional responses of the mothers. nurses need to work to empower mothers to overcome these negative responses. Sex education can also play an important role especially for the daughters especially through the use of visual aids. Further, nurses should understand the tearing difficulties of mentally handicapped daughters, what mothers need and also what they experience with their mentally handicapped daughters. In conclusion, nurses should understand the negative experiences of the mothers in relation to their mentally handicapped daughters' menarche, help the mothers cope with the negative. emotions through real life education and counselling. In addition, there is a need for nursing interventions and an administrative system which will minimize the prejudices of society towards handicapped people.
This study integrated mother's control behavior of child's misbehavior within social domain analysis and the framework of attributional models of social cognition. The purpose of this study was to identify, compare and contrast maternal attributions and control responses according to child's age and domains of social behavior, and to investigate that mother's social cognition factors(authoritarian attitude and self competence perception) influence material inference and responses for their child's acts. Then this study was to find out whether mother's attribution would mediate their socialization techniques. For empirical research, 654 mothers with 5.6 year old and 8.9 year old children as subjects answered the structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed by frequencies, t-test, oneway ANOVA, and multiple regression. The major findings were as follows: First, according to child's two domains of misbehavior, there were differences in mothers'attribution and control behavior. Also mothers regarded older child's behavior as more dispositional cause and as more deserving of punishment than younger child's. Second, mother's authoritarian altitude of parenting, self-competence perception, and educational level were significantly related to mother's judgment. Third, the more authoritarian attitude mothers had, the more dispositional factor of children they attributed. And the lower self-competence mothers perceived. the more internal factor of child they attributed. Finally, maternal attributions and control responses are interrelated. When they attributed their children's misdeeds to internal dispositions, they respond with more stronger control behavior. The results suggested maternal social cognition mediate socialization behavior.
The purpose of this study was to defined mothers perception of their infants when the babies were high - risk babies, and to describe the feelings and responses of the mothers following on the birth of high - risk babies and on their hospitalization. The subjects of the study were 30 mothers of high-risk infants at D and M Hospital of E University. Data were collected between August 1993 and June 1994. Using the Neonatal Perception Inventory(NPI ) devised by Broussard to determine the perception of mothers and an open-ended, semi-structured interview which was conducted in the nursery room within 24 to 72 hours after delivery And NPI tested 1 month after the babies were discharged from the NICU also. Data were analyzed using SAS and content analy-sis. The results of this study are as follows ; 1. The mothers tended to perceive their infants positively, regardless of the condition of the infant. Mothers who perceived their infant negatively were slightly increased at 1 month after the babies were discharged from the NICU, but the difference was not statistically significant. 2. Mothers reported that they thought that the newborn can see and hear well, and also they can ex-press themselves. 3. There were many types of response noted such as anxiety, fear, helplessness, pity, resentment, guilt, resignation, hope, relief, appreciation, and feelings of being able to overcome the situation. These were differentiated into positive and negative responses. The finding of positive responses being expressed by mother of high -risk infants while their infants were in NICU was a unique finding especially, appreciation and feelings of being able overcome the situation. The results suggest the need for replication studies and for research on nursing interventions directed at improving the quality of life of high-risk infants and their mother.
The purpose of this study was to examine children's sociability as a function of sex of child, number and sex of sibling, and birth order. Children's responses were compared with mothers' responses on social participation and interpersonal adjustment. Subjects were 506 4th and 5th grade children and their mothers. Results showed that mothers' perceptions of their child's sociability were different from those of the children. 'Number of sibling' differences between only children and others were found, with onlies being most likely to show lower scores in interpersonal adjustment. Sex differences in sociability were clearly demonstrated by both children and mothers; that is, boy's interpersonal adjustment scores were lower than girls' scores. Two-way ANOVA data revealed that second-born boys and first-born girls were most likely to obtain higher scores. For siblings, elder sisters showed the highest interpersonal adjustment scores, regardless of sex of younger sibling.
This study explored age and sex differences in preschoolers' narrative representations of their mothers. Subjects were 120 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-year-old children, with 15 boys and 15 girls in each age group. Using the MacArthur Story Stem Battery(Bretherton et al., 1990), observations were made to obtain children's narrative representations of their mothers. content themes and emotional responses. Boys' representations were more negative and less positive than girls' regardless of their age. Boys talked about more aggressive themes and showed more anxiety and less joy. Five and 6-year-old children had less negative and disciplinary representations of their mothers than 3- and 4-year-olds. Six-year-olds showed less prosocial themes than 3- and 5-years, and fewer aggressive themes than 3-and 4-year while they showed less joy, distress and concern responses than 3-years.
The purpose of this study was to analyze coping behavior types of mothers of autistic children. Through the use of Q methodology using a sample of 23 pairs of mothers and therapists, four factors were derived that account for the coping strategies of mothers of children with autism. The mothers of the first type have either accepted their child's disability and their own situation. For the second type, the mothers engaged in therapeutic work for their child with a positive attitude. These mothers accepted their child as a family member. The third type shared ambivalent feelings and responses regarding their child's disability. And the last type expressed concerns and difficulties related to the situation. They tried to get social support to deal with the stressful situation. The agreement of mothers'psychological adjustment from the exports'and mothers'perceptive was found to be 52%.
The purpose of this study was to explore the types of mother's language and literacy information as they collaborated to write a letter during a 10-minute session. Subjects of the study consisted of 60 mothers and their children 10 boys and 10 girls each at the age of 3,4 and 5 The mothers' teaching language was analyzed on the basis of hoffman(1987)'s study and the types of information thant mothers and children exchanged during writing letters was analyzed by Burns and Casbergue (1992)'s categories. Frequency percentages and χ2 tests were used to analyze the data. The resuls of this study were as follows. 1. The types of the mothers' teaching language from the most to the least were mother-initiated statements mother-initiated questions and mother's responses to child's efforts. There were significant differences according to children's age in mothers' language. In the mother-initiated questions request questions were used most frequently and followed by interrogation questions and invitation questions next. The statements initiated by mothers were directive comments informative comments supportive comments insistence comments and invitation comments in order. Mothers' responses to child's efforts were corrects/controls additional cues confirmation promotion and praise in order. In all three types of the teaching language significant promotion and praise in order. In all three types of the teaching language significant differences were found according to children's age. 2. The types of information about writing were spelling content off task/preparation mechanical conventions and conceptual meaning of writing in order. Significant differences were found according to children's age. In the age group of 4-and 5-year-olds the mothers exchanged more information about spelling than the mothers of 3-years-olds who frequently used information about content and off task or preparation of writing the letter.
The social behaviors of 177(84 girls, 93 boys) 5-6 year olds were rated by the SCBE teacher questionnaire. Mothers reported on their reactions to children's negative emotions and on children's emotionality by questionnaires. Results showed that girls' emotionality was related to maternal punitive responses and their withdrawn behaviors. Maternal emotion-focused reponses were associated with boys' social behaviors. Maternal distress reactions were correlated with girls' prosocial behaviors; maternal punitive responses were related to girls' prosocial and withdrawn behaviors. Maternal emotion-focused responses were associated with girls' aggressive behaviors. Partial correlation analysis indicated girls' emotionality was not related to their withdrawn behaviors when maternal punitive responses were taken into account.
The purpose of this study was to find out adolescents' and their mothers' responses to the minimum standard of age suggested by previous research not to share bedroom among parents and child, children of the opposite sex, or children of the same sex. The data from 310 pairs of junior school students and their mothers were analyzed. The results showed that the percentages of agreements to the suggested ages were not the same. Adolescents were in general more likely flexible to the minimum age than were their mothers. The age standard of the opposite sex children over 10 years old must not share a bedroom was the most agreeable both to child and mother. Both mother and adolescents' children were more likely flexible to the rule that parents should not should not share a bedroom with a child over age 5. However, they were serious about sharing a bedroom between same sex children regardless age. Further research should reveal precisely the age standard represent the high agreement among the family members.
The Purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of breastfeeding using a phenomenological research methodology The sample consisted of 9 primiparous mothers who had breastfed their babies at least for 3 consecutive months. Data were collected from January 10 to February 28, 1998 through interviewing. The research question was “What was the meaning of breastfeeding to breastfeeding mothers\ulcorner” Responses to non-structured open-ended question was audio-recorded during the interview. Data were analyzed using the phenomenological method of Colazzi. From the protocols, significant statements about meaning of breastfeeding were clustered into 8 themes. Mothers perceived meaning of breastfeeding as feeling of unification through tie, expression of love, gift, nutritional supplement, duty as a mother, nurturing. mystery, and identity. From the results of this study, breastfeeding mothers perceived breastfeeding positively, so nurses need to encourage mothers to breastfeed her baby and develop program which can promote successful breastfeeding.
