  • This study investigated causal relations between mother's parenting, self-efficacy, perceived social support, stress, and parenting behaviors, Child's temperament, and the mediational role of mother's parenting self-efficacy. Participants were 404 Korean children and their mothers living in Seoul, Korea. Results showed that mother's parenting self-efficacy was positively related to mother's Warmth-Acceptance, social support, and child's temperament. On the other hand, mother's parenting self-efficacy was negatively related to. mother's Rejection-Restriction, mother's Permissiveness-Nonintervention, and mother's stress. Structural equation modeling indicated that mother's parenting self-efficacy was a significant mediator of the relation between mother's perceived social support and stress, child's temperament, and mother's parenting behaviors including Warmth-Acceptance, Rejection-Restriction and Permissiveness-Nonintervention Child's temperament had an indirect effect on mother's Rejection-Restriction and Permissiveness Nonintervention.

  • This study examined effects of children's emotionality and emotion regulation, and maternal parenting behaviors on children's peer competence. Subjects were 222 4- and 5-year-olds children and their mothers. Classroom teachers rated each child's peer competence and emotion regulation; mothers responded to questionnaires on their child's emotionality and on their own parenting behavior. Results of this study were : (1) children's positive and negative emotionality and emotion regulation influenced children's peer competence. (2) Mother's warm and encouraging behaviors were also associated with children's peer competence. (3) Children's emotion regulation rather than negative emotion and mother's warm and encouraging behaviors predicted peer competence. Child characteristics were stronger predictors than parenting behaviors.

  • This study examined the effects of academic self-concept (internal factor) and maternal parenting behaviors (external factor) on academic delay of gratification (ADOG). Additionally, models predicting ADOG were compared between Korean and Malaysian children. The participants of this study were 100 Korean third graders and their mothers, and 100 Malaysian third graders and their mothers. The children completed the modified versions of the Academic Delay of Gratification Scale for Children, and Academic Self-Concept Questionnaire. The mothers completed the Parenting Attitude Test. Pearson's correlation tests, independent t-tests, and multiple regression analyses were conducted to test the research hypotheses. The results showed that Korean children reported higher ADOG and academic self-concept scores than that of Malaysian children. Moreover, academic self-concept was found to have a significant positive effect on ADOG among both Korean and Malaysian children. There was no significant gender difference in ADOG for both Korean and Malaysian children. However, the effects of maternal parenting behaviors on ADOG were only detected among the Malaysian children, particularly on Achievement Press. That is, only for the Malaysian children, maternal pressure about academic achievement was found to have a significant positive effect on ADOG. In conclusion, only academic self-concept was found to be a significant predictor explaining the variance in ADOG among Korean children. On the other hand, academic self-concept and maternal parenting behaviors were shown as significant predictors explaining the variance in ADOG among Malaysian children.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to review the relationship between parenting daily hassles (PDHs), parenting burden and maltreatment as perceived by Korean and Japanese mothers raising children. In addition, the influence of parenting support, efficiency and satisfaction on child maltreatment were also reviewed. Methods: Data were gathered through self-administered questionnaires given to the mothers using the childcare center in both countries. As for the final procedure, 820 Korea and 700 Japan mothers were statistically processed, and data were analyed through factor analysis and path analysis. Result: The results showed that in both countries, parenting burden caused by PDHs significantly affected physical and mental maltreatment. parenting efficiency and satisfaction as a buffering factor could inhibit mental maltreatment. However, among buffering factors, Korean parenting mothers chose parenting efficiency and Japanese parenting mothers did parenting satisfaction. Conclusions: Based on the findings, it is needed parenting mothers are offered on opportunity to take health education programs and to understand their child's behaviors and learn parent's roles of parenting. In addition, local community support is desired.

The level of parenting efficacy was $2.72{\pm}0.36$ and adaptation stress level was $3.35{\pm}0.47$ showing perceived hostility the highest and homesickness the lowest. Participants with moderate to severe PTSD accounted for 79.5% of the mothers, and 75% of them reported symptoms for 3 months or more. Authoritative parenting behavior showed negative relationships with parenting efficacy, cultural crisis and fear, adaptation stress and PTSD. Conclusion: Mothers who have defected from showed negative parenting behaviors and high adaptation stress level and PTSD while parenting efficacy was high. These findings indicate that parenting intervention programs which can guide these mothers towards positive parenting behaviors need to be developed.

  • This study examined the role of maternal attribution in parenting behaviors of mothers who have a child with developmental disabilities. Using an attributional model, it assessed whether maternal attributions about the child's knowledge, capacity, expectation, and responsibility for behavior problems have effects on maternal behaviors of affect, authoritarian control, and overprotect. The sample consisted of 161 mothers of elementary children with developmental disabilities. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that maternal attribution about the child's capacity for misbehavior had positive influence on maternal affect and negative influence on authoritarian control behaviors, and that maternal attribution of responsibility for misbehavior positively influenced maternal authoritarian control and overprotect behaviors. Also, maternal attribution about the child's knowledge for misbehavior had negative influence on maternal overprotect behaviors. In addition, such background factors as number of disability, maternal education, and job of mother were significant predictors for maternal attribution, while maternal self-esteem was a strong significant predictor for mothering behaviors. The findings suggest the importance of maternal attributions in parenting.

  • A sample of 654 elementary school children(330 boys and 324 girls) and their mothers responded to three questionnaires regarding mother's job satisfaction and parenting behavior and children's problem behavior. Results showed that working mothers perceived themselves as more permissive/neglecting compared with non-working mothers. Children of working mothers perceived themselves as hyperactive, anxious, withdrawn, aggressive, and immature. Parenting of working mothers with higher job satisfaction was more warm/accepting; their daughters perceived themselves as less anxious, withdrawn, and immature than children of mothers with lower job satisfaction. Children of rejecting/restrictive working mothers, especially girls, reported hyperactive, withdrawn, aggressive, and immature behaviors. Children of permissive/neglecting working mothers were immature. Warm/accepting parenting of working mothers played mediating roles between their job satisfaction and maturity of their daughters' behavior.

  • Maternal interactions during mother-child problem solving tasks were analyzed by marital satisfaction, parenting stress, and child attachment security. Forty 36-to 52-month-old children and their mothers were observed at home. Mothers' ratings of marital satisfaction and parenting stress were collected by questionnaires, and Attachment Q-set assessed child attachment security. Marital satisfaction and child attachment security were negative1y related to parenting stress. Marital satisfaction, parenting stress, and attachment security were related to maternal behaviors. The relations between child's attachment security and maternal behaviors were mediated by parenting stress. Stronger child attachment security was related to lower parenting stress, which in turn contributed to competent maternal behaviors during problem solving.
