  • Mitochondrion is an important intracellular organelle controlling energy production essential for cell survival. In addition, it is closely related to cellular apoptosis and necrosis. Linear, branched, circular, and ball-shaped mitochondria have been reported. Recent research suggests that mitochondrial morphology may reflect functional status of the cell. In this study, we investigated the density and ratio of the each morphological categories of mitochondria in a few normal cultured cells; astrocyte, HeLa and COS7 cells, of which metabolic activities are different, with high voltage electron microscopy. The absolute number and relative number per unit area of mitochondria was largest in astrocyte. But, the proportion of different mitochondrial shape was similar among cells. These results shows the numerical profiles but not morphological profiles of mitochondria are related to the metabolic activity of each cell line.

  • In this study, characteristics of TiAl alloy and SCM440 (Cr-Mo steel) have been investigated with the various joining condition by servo motor type friction welder. The experimental factors of friction welder used in this study are spindle revolution, friction speed, and distance, upset speed and distance, respectively. Servo motor type friction welder could be controlled by the level of oil pressure, and it could be performed by position control dependence of electrical energy. Mechanical properties and morphology of welded interface were characterized by various joining condition. This aroused due to the bond strength dependence on friction heat and size of the heat affected zone. Therefore, it is necessary to have enough friction heat and decreased heat affected zone for good friction welding between dissimilar metals. An optimum bond was obtained between TiAl alloy and SCM440 by controlling friction speed and distance. At the spindle revolution 4,000 rpm, friction speed 120 mm/min, friction distance 15 mm, the bond strength was found to be 312 MPa.

  • Electrochemical anodization has been interested due to its useful way for the nano-scale architecture of metal oxides obtained from a metal substrate. By using this method, it is easy to control the morphology of the oxide materials by controlling electrochemical conditions. Among oxide materials obtained from the transition metals such as Ti, V, W, etc., in this paper, the morphological study of anodized $TiO_2$ was employed at various voltage conditions in fluoric based electrolyte, and the effects of applied voltage (sweep rate and retention time) on the tube morphologies were investigated. Furthermore, by using anodization of tungsten substrate (W), we fabricated the porous structure of $WO_3$ and provided merits of tailored structure for the hybridization of inorganic and organic materials as electrochromic (EC) applications. The hybrid porous $WO_3$ shows multi-chromic properties during the EC reactions at specific voltage conditions. From these results, the anodization process with tailoring nano-structure is one of the promising methods for EC applications.

  • The advantage of plasma-sprayed coating is their good resistance against thermal shock due to the porous state of the coated layer with a consequently low Youngs modulus. However, the existence of many pores with a bimodal distribution and a laminar structure in the coating reduces coating strength and oxidation protection of the base metals. In order to counteract these problems, there have been many efforts to obtain dense coatings by spraying under low pressure or vacuum and by controlling particle size and morphology of the spraying materials. The aim of the present study is to survey the effects of the HIP treatment between 1100 and 130$0^{\circ}C$ on plasma-sprayed oxide coating of A1$_2$O$_3$, A1$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$on the metal substrate (type C18N10T stainless steel). These effects were characterized by phase identification, Vickers hardness measurement, and tensile test before and after HIPing. These results show that high-pressure treatment has an advantage for improving adhesive strength and Vickers hardness of plasma-sprayed coatings.

  • Over the last several decades, innovative light-harvesting devices have evolved to achieve high efficiency in solar energy transfer. Research on the mechanisms for plasmon resonance is very desirable to overcome the conventional efficiency limits of photovoltaics. The influence of localized surface plasmon resonance on hot electron flow at a metal-semiconductor interface was observed with a Schottky diode composed of a thin silver layer on $TiO_2$. The photocurrent is generated by absorption of photons when electrons have enough energy to travel over the Schottky barrier and into the titanium oxide conduction band. The correlation between the hot electrons and the surface plasmon is confirmed by matching the range of peaks between the incident photons to current conversion efficiency (IPCE, flux of collected electrons per flux of incident photons) and UV-Vis spectra. The photocurrent measured on Ag/$TiO_2$ exhibited surface plasmon peaks; whereas, in contrast to the Au/$TiO_2$, a continuous Au thin film doesn't exhibit surface plasmon peaks. We modified the thickness and morphology of a continuous Ag layer by electron beam evaporation deposition and heating under gas conditions and found that the morphological change and thickness of the Ag film are key factors in controlling the peak position of light absorption.

  • Semiconducting amorphous InGaZnO (a-IGZO) has attracted significant research attention as improved deposition techniques have made it possible to make high-quality a-IGZO thin films. IGZO thin films have several advantages over thin film transistors (TFTs) based on other semiconducting channel layers. The electron mobility in IGZO devices is relatively high, exceeding amorphous Si (a-Si) by a factor of 10 and most organic devices by a factor of $10^2$. Moreover, in contrast to other amorphous semiconductors, highly conducting degenerate states can be obtained with IGZO through doping, yet such a state cannot be produced with a-Si. IGZO thin films are capable of mobilities greaterthan 10 $cm^2$/Vs (higher than a-Si:H), and are transparent at visible wavelengths. For oxide semiconductors, carrier concentrations can be controlled through oxygen vacancy concentration. Hence, adjusting the oxygen partial pressure during deposition and post-deposition processing provides an effective method of controlling oxygen concentration. In this study, we deposited IGZO thinfilms at optimized conditions and then analyzed the film's electrical properties, surface morphology, and crystal structure. Then, we explored how to generate IGZO thin films using DC magnetron sputtering. We also describe the construction and characteristics of a bottom-gate-type TFT, including the output and transfer curves and bias stress instability mechanism.

  • The Cu and CuSn/PVP nanofibers were fabricated by electrospinning method by controlling various parameters. The precursor solution was prepared with copper(II) acetate monohydrate ($Cu(CH_3COO)_2$) and tin chloride dihydrate ($SnCl_2{\cdot}2H_2O$), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) for adjusting viscosity. The fabricated nanofibers were calcined at 873 K in Ar atmospheric environment for 5 hours to remove the solvent and polymer. The morphology and diameter of nanofibers were measured by optical microscopy (OM) with Motic image plus 2.0 program. The components and chemical environment were investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). From the XPS survey spectra, we confirmed that CuSn/PVP nanofibers were successfully fabricated. The XPS peaks of C 1s and N 1s were remarkably decreased after calcination of the nanofibers at 873 K. It implies that the PVP was completely decomposed after calcination at 873 K.

  • We present a novel and simple method to enable spatially selective $ZnAl_2O_4$ nanocrystal formation on the surface of $B_2O_3$-$Al_2O_3$-ZnO-CaO-$K_2O$ glass by employing localized laser heating. Optimized precipitation of glass-ceramics containing nanocrystals doped with $Eu^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ ions was performed by controlling $CO_2$ laser power and scan speed. Micro-x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealed the mean size and morphology of nanocrystals, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy showed the lateral distribution of elements in the imaged area. Laser power and scan speed controled annealing temperature for crystalization in the range of 1.4-1.8 W and 0.01-0.3 mm/s, and changed the size of nanocrystals and distribution of dopant ions. We also report more than 20 times enhanced downshift visible emission under ultraviolet excitation, and 3 times increased upconversion emission from $Eu^{3+}$ ions assisted by efficient sensitizer $Yb^{3+}$ ions in nanocrystals under 980 nm excitation. The confocal microscope revealed the depth profile of $Eu^{3+}$ ions by showing their emission intensity variation.

  • Development of biodegradable implants for treatment of complex bone fractures has recently become one of the priority areas in biomedical materials research. Multifunctional corrosion resistant and bioactive coatings containing hydroxyapatite $Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6(OH)_2$ and magnesium oxide MgO were obtained on Mg-Mn-Ce magnesium alloy by plasma electrolytic oxidation. The phase and elemental composition, morphology, and anticorrosion properties of the coatings were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The PEO-layers were post-treated using superdispersed polytetrafluoroethylene powder. The duplex treatment considerably reduced the corrosion rate (>4 orders of magnitude) of the magnesium alloy. The use of composite coatings in inducing bioactivity and controlling the corrosion degradation of resorbable Mg implants are considered promising. We also applied the plasma electrolytic oxidation method for the formation of the composite bioinert coatings on the titanium nickelide surface in order to improve its electrochemical properties and to change the morphological structure. It was shown that formed coatings significantly reduced the quantity of nickel ions released into the organism.

  • processes at the origin of the star formation in the galaxies over the last 10 billions years. While it was proposed in the past that merging of galaxies has a dominant role to explain the triggering of the star formation in the distant galaxies having high star formation rates. In the opposite, more recent studies revealed scaling laws linking the star formation rate in the galaxies to their stellar mass or their gas mass. The small dispersion of these laws seems to be in contradiction with the idea of powerful stochastic events due to interactions, but rather in agreement with the new vision of galaxy history where the latter are continuously fed by intergalactic gas. I was especially interested in one of this scaling law, the relation between the star formation (SFR) and the stellar mass (M*) of galaxies, commonly called the main sequence of star forming galaxies. I have studied this main sequence, SFR-M*, in function of the morphology and other physical parameters as the radius, the colour, the clumpiness. The goal was to understand the origin of the sequence's dispersion related to the physical processes underlying this sequence in order to identify the main mode of star formation controlling this sequence. This work needed a multi-wavelength approach as well as the use of galaxies profile simulation to distinguish between the different galaxy morphological types implied in the main sequence.
