In this paper, we proposed the recognition system of car license plates to mitigate traffic problems. The processing sequence of the proposed algorithm is as follows. At first, a license plate segment is extracted from an acquired car image using morphological features and color information, and noises are eliminated from the extracted license plate segment using line scan algorithm and Grassfire algorithm, and then individual codes are extracted from the license plate segment using edge tracking algorithm. Finally the extracted individual codes are recognized by an FCM algorithm. In order to evaluate performance of segment extraction and code recognition of the proposed method, we used 100 car images for experiment. In the results, we could verify the proposed method is more effective and recognition performance is improved in comparison with conventional car license plate recognition methods.
Microscopic examination for the morphological estimation of wear debris on the oil-lubrcated moving system is an accepted method for machine condition and fault diagnosis. However wear particle anaysis has not been widely accepted industry because it is dependent on expert interpretation of particle morphology and relies on subjective assessment criteria. This paper was undertaken to estimate the morphology of wear debris on the oil-lubricated movig system by computer image analysis. The wear test was performed under different sliding conditions using a wear test device made in our laboratory and wear testing specimen of the pin-on-disk-type was rubbed in pararline series base oil. In order to describe characteristics of debris of various shape and size, four shape parameters (50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity) have been developed and outlined in the paper. A system using such techniques promises to obviate the need for subjective, human interpretation of particle morphology in machine condition monitoring.

It can be effective on failure diagnosis of oil-lubricated tribological system to analyze operating conditions with morphological characteristics of wear debris in a lubricated machine. And it can be recognized that results are processed threshold images of wear debris. But it is needed to analyse and identify a morphology of wear debris in order to predict and estimate a operating condition of the lubricated machine. If the morphological characteristics of wear debris are identified by the computer image analysis and the neural network, it is possible to recognize the friction condition. In this study, wear debris in the lubricating oil are extracted from membrane filter (0.45 ${\mu}m$) and the quantitative value fur shape parameters of wear debris was calculated through the computer image processing. Four shape parameters were investigated and friction condition was recognized very well by the neural network.
This paper proposes a new VLSI architecture for morphological filters and presents its chip design and implementation. The proposed architecture can significantly reduce hardware costs compared with existing architecture by using a feedback loop path to reuse partial results and a decoder/encoder pair to detect maximum/minimum values. In addition, the proposed architecture requires one common architecture for both diltion and erosion and fewer number of operations. Moreover, it can be easily extended for larger size morphologica operations. We developed VHDL (VHSIC hardware description language) models, performed logic synthesis using the SYNOPSYS CAD tool. We used the SOG (sea-of-gate) cell library and implemented the actual chip. The total number of gates is only 2,667 and the clock frequency is 30 MHz that meets real-time image processing requirements.
The morphological analysis of wear debris can provide early a failure diagnosis in lubricated moving system. It can be effective to analyze operating conditions of oil-lubricated tribological system with shape characteristics of wear debris in a lubricant. But, in order to predict and recognize an operating condition of lubricated machine, it is needed to analyze and to identify shape characteristics of wear debris. Therefore, If the morphological characteristics of wear debris are recognized by computer image analysis using the neural network algorithm, it is possible to recognize operating condition of hydraulic driving members. In this study, wear debris in the lubricating oil are extracted by membrane filter (0.45 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), and the quantitative values of shape parameters of wear debris are calculated by the digital image processing. This shape parameters are studied and identified by the artificial neural network algorithm. The result of study could be applied to prediction and to recognition of the operating condition of hydraulic driving members in lubricated machine systems.
Sunspots usually appear in a group which can be classified by certain morphological criteria. In this study we examine the moments which are statistical parameters computed by summing over every pixels of contours, in order to quantify the morphological characteristics of a sunspot group. The moments can be additional characteristics to the sunspot group classification such as McIntosh classification. We are developing a program for image processing, detection of contours and computation of the moments using continuum images from SOHO/MDI. We apply the program to count the sunspot numbers from 303 continuum images in 2003. The sunspot numbers obtained by the program are compared with those by SIDC. The comparison shows that they have a good correlation (r=89%). We are extending this application to automatic sunspot classification (e.g., McIntosh classification) and flare forecasting.
In this study, an optical imaging method was developed for the measurements of the sizes and velocities of droplets in sprays. Double-exposure single-frame spray images were captured by the imaging system. An image processing program was developed for the measurements of the sizes and positions of individual particles including separation of the overlapped particles and particle tracking and pairing at two time instants. To recognize and separate overlapping particles, the morphological method based on watershed segmentation as well as separation using the perimeter and convex hull of image was used consecutively. Better results in separation were obtained by utilization of both methods especially for the multiple or heavily-overlapped particles. The match probability method was adopted for particle tracking and pairing after identifying the positions of individual particles and it produced good matching results even for large particles like droplets in sprays. Therefore, the developed optical imaging method could provide a reliable way of analyzing the motion and size distribution of droplets produced by various sprays and atomization devices.

Morphological analysis is used for searching sentences and understanding context. As most morpheme analysis methods are based on predefined dictionaries, the problem of a target word not being registered in the given morpheme dictionary, the so-called unregistered word problem, can be a major cause of reduced performance. The current practical solution of such unregistered word problem is to add them by hand-write into the given dictionary. This method is a limitation that restricts the scalability and expandability of dictionaries. In order to overcome this limitation, we propose a novel method to automatically expand a dictionary by means of use-case analysis, which checks the validity of the unregistered word by exploring the use-cases through web crawling. The results show that the proposed method is a feasible one in terms of the accuracy of the validation process, the expandability of the dictionary and, after registration, the fast extraction time of morphemes.

Soil is a rich source of saprobic and pathogenic fungi in crop cultivation areas. Compared with that of the fruit trees, scarce information is available regarding the fungi present in orchard soils in Korea. We sampled rhizosphere soils of apple and pear trees from several orchards in Cheongju, Anseong, and Cheonan, Korea. During the processing of soil fungi, seven unrecorded species of the phylum Ascomycota were isolated. These included Acrocalymma walkeri, Clonostachys krabiensis, Coniella vitis, Cosmospora diminuta, Lasiobolidium spirale, Penicillium vallebormidaense, and Pseudothielavia arxii. All the species were identified and described based on morphological characteristics and molecular analysis of the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region and the large subunit of nuclear ribosomal RNA gene and partial β-tubulin gene (BenA) sequences. Descriptions and illustrations of the morphological characteristics are provided.
