In order to evaluate the antimicrobial function of natural herb extracts as antimicrobial agent or packaging material for the preservation of foods and greenhouse produce, the water extract of chopi (Zanthoxylum piperitum DC.) was prepared and its antimicobial activity was determined. In the paper disk test its antimicrobial activity was increased in proportion to its concentraion. The growth of microorganisms was completely inhibited above 500ppm of its concentration. It showed wide spectrum of thermal(40 to 180oC) and pH(4 to 10) stabilities. In the electronic microscopic observation(TEM and SEM) of microbial morphological change it showed to decrease the activation of physiological enzymes and to lose the function of cell membranes. Even in the activation test of galactosidase, it seemed to weaken the osmotic function of cell membranes remarkably in comparison with chloroform and its activation corresponded to 40~50% of toluene. Zanthoxylum piperitum DC. extract seemed to be an excellent antimicrobial for the inhibition of food borne microorganisms as well as the pre servation of greenhouse produces.

Tageteserecta flower like zinc oxide nanostructures composed of hexagonal nanorods were synthesized via sonochemical method at room temperature. The synthesized nanomaterials exhibited wurtzite hexagonal phase structure with the single crystalline nature. The diameter of the individual nanorods that constitute the flower shaped zinc oxide structures is in the range of 120-160 nm. The sonication time effectively determined the morphological properties of the prepared materials. The catalytic activity of prepared zinc oxide nanostructures towards N-formylation reactions were evaluated without any surface modification and the nanostructures exhibited good reaction yield with the prompt recyclability behavior.
An endophytic fungus strain DYSJ3 was isolated from a stem of Aphanamixis grandifolia Blume, which was identified as Aspergillus versicolor based on the morphological characteristics, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and calmodulin gene sequences analyses. A. versicolor DYSJ3 exhibited strong antagonistic activity against Colletotrichum musae, C. gloeosporioides and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense with the inhibition rates of 61.9, 51.2 and 55.3% respectively. The antifungal metabolites mainly existed in the mycelium of A. versicolor DYSJ3, and its mycelial crude extract (CE) had broad-spectrum antifungal activities against plant pathogenic fungi. The CE had a good thermal stability, and the inhibition rate of 100 mg/mL CE against C. musae was above 70.0% after disposing at 120 ℃ for 1 h. Five secondary metabolites were isolated from the CE and identified as averufanin, ergosterol peroxide, versicolorin B, averythrin and sterigmatocystin. Activity evaluation showed versicolorin B exhibited inhibitory effects on the mycelial growth and conidial germination of C. musae, and sterigmatocystin had a weak inhibitory effect on the mycelial growth of C. musae.
In order to identify the morphological changes of tissues in mouse after irradiation. We have observed the redistribution of LDH isozymes and the morphological changes of skeletal muscle, heart, kidney, liver and testis in mouse according to variation amount with the time after the 1 Gray and 3 Gray irradiation each. As a result of H-E (hematoxylin-eosin) stain, the apoptotic bodies were more easily observed in the liver than the other tissues and the quantity of the apoptotic bodies was proportionated to radiation amount. The number of apoptotic bodies was shown the highest at 1 day in most tissues and at 7 day in testis after irradiation. TUNEL (terminal deoxyribonucleodtidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-digoxigenin nick end labeling) staining was shown the same results as H-E staining. After the irradiation, the protein content was reduced in tissues except kidney. And protein content was reduced in all tissues at the initial period of 2 hours after 3 Gy irradiation. But it increased at 7 days after irradiation. LDH (EC 1.1.1.27, lactate dehydrogenase) activity was increased mostly in tissues at the early stage after 1 Gy irradiation. The maximum activity was detected earlier stage after 1 Gy irradiation than 3 Gy irradiation. The activity of LDH $A_4$ isozyme was decreased in the skeletal muscle, heart, kidney, and testis. The activity of $B_4$ and $A_2$$B_2$ sozyme was increased in the skeletal muscle and heart, and the activity of heterotetramer isozyme was increased in kidney The activity of $A_4$ isozyme in liver was detected high level and the activity of isozyme including subunit C elevated in testis. Therefore, LDH isozyme seems to play a role of lactate oxidase in most tissues except liver after irradiation. These data support that LDH isozyme is predomintly involved in the aerobic metabolism.

Botrytis cinerea isolates obtained from infected plants of cucumber, tomato, and strawberry were divided into three groups (sporing, sclerotial, and mycelial types). Of which sclerotial types were the major group. There were no correlations between morphological phenotypes and responses to benzimidazole and dicarboximide fungicides. External structure of conidia of three phenotypes by scanning electron microscope was the same with verrucose surface. Mycelial type was the most virulent on fruits of eggplants. Comparative tests were carried out to examine correlations between the virulence and production of fungal enzymes such as phenol oxidases, pectin methyl esterases (PME), amylases, cellulases, ureases, ${\beta}-glucosidases$, and proteinases. There was no correlation among the phenotypes in production of phenol oxidases and ${\beta}-glucosidases$. However, there were significantly different from each other in PME, amylase, cellulase, urease, and protease activity.

X-ray plasma ejections often occurred around the impulsive phases of solar flares and have been well observed by the SXT aboard Yohkoh. Though the X-ray plasma ejections show various morphological shapes, there has been no attempt at classifying the morphological groups for a large sample of the X-ray plasma ejections. In this study, we have classified 137 X-ray plasma ejections according to their shape for the first time. Our classification criteria are as follows: (1) a loop type shows ejecting plasma with the shape of loops, (2) a spray type has a continuous stream of plasma without showing any typical shape, (3) a jet type shows collimated motions of plasma, (4) a confined ejection shows limited motions of plasma near a flaring site. As a result, we classified the flare-associated X-ray plasma ejections into five groups as follows: loop-type (60 events), spray-type (40 events), jet-type (11 events), confined ejection (18 events), and others (8 events). As an illustration, we presented time sequence images of several typical events to discuss their morphological characteristics, speed, CME association, and magnetic field configuration. We found that the jet-type events tend to have higher speeds and better association with CMEs than those of the loop-type events. It is also found that the CME association (11/11) of the jet-type events is much higher than that (5/18) of the confined ejections. These facts imply that the physical characteristics of the X-ray plasma ejections are closely associated with magnetic field configurations near the reconnection regions.
A bacterial strain MPL-01 was isolated from the large intestine of a wild boar. The strain was shown to have morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics, fatty acids composition typical of Bacillus. The 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that the isolate formed distinct phyletic line that was most closely related to this of Bacillus atrophaeus (99.99%). It was proposed that the strain is classified as B. atrophaeus MPL-01. The strain MPL-01 exhibited the strongest antifungal activity against Colletotrichum acutatum, the pathogen of anthracnose of chili peppers. The ethyl acetate extract of culture filtrate possessed not only the antifungal activity but also the bio-surfactant activity. Therefore, the strain MPL-01 could be a useful bacterium in the development of bio-control process against the pathogenic fungi.
A bacterium(Y-5) which has potent antibacterial activity against swine atrophic rhinitis bacteria (Bordetella bronchiseptica, Pasteurella multocida) was isolated from soil and identified as a strain of Bacillus sp. Y-5 upon investigation of the morphological and physiological characteristics. The culture broth obtained from incubation of the Y-5 strain at $30^{\circ}C$ for 21 h in tryptose-bouillon agar medium (pH 6.0) showed active antibacterial activity against Bordetella bronchiseptica and the culture broth that of $30^{\circ}C$, pH 6.5, 18 h showed active antibacterial activity against Pasteurella multocida.
Antifreeze proteins and glycoproteins [AF(G)Ps] constitute a group of proteins that lower the freezing but not the melting points of aqueous solutions, enabling polar and north-temperate fish to survive in ice-laden environments. However, little is known about antifreeze activity in temperate fish; such work would extend our knowledge on the functions and evolution of AF(G)Ps. In the present study, we screened for antifreeze activity in temperate fish caught off the coast of Jumunjin ($37.89^{\circ}N$), Gangneung, Korea. Thermal hysteresis (TH) and the ability to inhibit ice recrystallization (IR) in blood, liver, and muscle samples from nine fish were examined to assess antifreeze activity. As the East Sea off the coast of Jumunjin is ice-free year round, we thought it most unlikely that the fish would express antifreeze proteins. Surprisingly, the blood of Pleurogrammus azonus and three types of tissue from Gymnocanthus herzensteini, Zoarces gilli and Kareius bicoloratus exhibited measurable TH values together with the ability to trigger characteristic morphological changes in ice crystals. Blood samples from the three species also evidenced ice recrystallization (IR) inhibition. This implies that AF(G)Ps or other antifreeze-like substances are present in temperate fish even under nonfreezing conditions. These results contribute to our understanding of the functions and origins of antifreeze activity in fish.
Twenty six microorganisms were isolated from soil and horse manure samples from in Iowa, U.S. Microorganisms were cultivated and screened by using plate count agar (PCA) at $35^{\circ}C$ containing 1% (w/v) oat spelt xylan instead of glucose. The xylanase activities of bacterial strains were analyzed by measuring the concentration of reducing sugar by DNS method. All isolated strains were characterized as the rod form and gram positive strains. Among the isolated strains, the HM6 strains gave the highest xylanase activity. This strain was identified as Bacillus pumilus HM6 by 16S rDNA sequence, morphological and biochemical analysis. Optimal culture temperature and initial medium pH for B. pumilus HM6 were $30-35^{\circ}C$ and pH 6-7, respectively. The maximum xylanase activity of 6879 IU/mL was obtained after growth of HM6 with 1% (w/v) oat spelt xylan at $35^{\circ}C$ for 6 days. Studies on enzymatic properties showed that the optimum conditions for the highest xylanase activity were $60^{\circ}C$ and pH 8.0. In addition, xylanase activity was stable over 2 hours at $50^{\circ}C$, whereas activity decreased after 30 min at $70^{\circ}C$.
