A specific disease syndrome, which led to massive mortality on larve of rockfish(Sebastes schlegeli) in marine hatcheries at Chungnam area during the period 1995~1996 was studied. The causative agent isolated from the diseased or dead larvae was identified as Vibrio ordalii on the basis of biochemical and biological characteristics. In the experimental challenges aganist 0 and 1 summer fish conducted at two different temperatures as $18^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, Vibrio ordalii showed higher virulence to no summer fish at $18^{\circ}C$ than 1-summer fish at $25^{\circ}C$. These results were consistent to field data obtained during epizootic outbreaks in the farms. Moribund and died larvae presented telangiectasis of secondary gill lamella and brain, dissecting of respiratory epithelium, atrophy of hepatic cells and necrosis of kidney associated with the presence of the bacteria. But the digestive tissue of these fish showed no significant change.
This is the first report describing acute mass mortality occurred in juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) caused by gas bubble disease (GBD). A total of 610 fish (average weight = 35 g), which were more than half of the fish acclimated at 17℃ in an aquarium, were killed within two days of acclimation. The dead and moribund fish showed excessively opened opercula and mouths, and occasionally, severe exophthalmia. Through microscopic observation, numerous gas emboli were found in the gills of the dead and live fish, while the fish were not infected with any microbial pathogens. The dissolved oxygen (DO) saturation level of the rearing water and seawater nearby the facility reached 145% and 286%, respectively, whereas other water quality parameters (such as salinity, pH, and chemical oxygen demand) were normal. The extreme saturation rate of seawater in the shore nearby seemed to be due to an enormous algal bloom that occurred there. Through molecular identification based on 18S rDNA sequences, the most dominant algal species was most closely related to Ulva californica (99.87% sequence identity) followed by U. prolifera, U. linza, and U. curvata (99.81%). Therefore, it can be concluded that supersaturated seawater due to mass algal bloom caused gas bubble disease in the olive flounder, leading to mass mortality. After technical adjustment, such as increased aeration, lowered water circulation rate, and inlet water filtration using micro-pore carbon filters, the DO level became normal, no further mortality occurred and the status of the fish was stabilized.

In a survey of net-caged yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata in the southern parts of Korean Peninsula, we found infestations of ciliate in the gills of the moribund fish during the abnormally elevated temperature. The ciliate was very similar to genus Colpoda Muller, 1773 on morphological and reproductive characteristics. Histopathological changes revealed that the ciliate invaded gills only, causing extensive destruction of the gill filaments including lamella without any clinical signs found in the other organs and tissues. This is the first record of the parasitic ciliate in cultured yellowtail.
Total aflatoxin and ochratoxin were detected in 3 naturally contaminated fish feed samples using immune-affinity method. The results revealed that the average levels of aflatoxins in the 3 examined samples were (15, 22 and $12\;{\mu}g/kg$) respectively while the average levels of ochratoxins were (15, 6 and $6\;{\mu}g/kg$). The results of determination of the effects of clay as a mycotoxin binder on the health status and performance of Oreochromis niloticus in comparing with a control group revealed that the survival rate in control group was 81% after the end of the culture season. The results also revealed that the survival rate in group 2 which received clay treated feed was 86%. The results of regular parasitological examination revealed the identification of trichodina as external protozoa in Oreochromis niloticus from both ponds but without manifestation of disease signs. The results of bacteriological examination revealed the isolation and identification of Pseudomonas flouresence from some moribund Oreochromis niloticus. Higher performance parameters were recorded in group 2 that received feeds treated with clay which reflected in the total production which reaches 1646.47 kg while in the control pond, the total production was1308.36 kg.

Streptococcosis in the olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus can be caused by Streptococcus parauberis. We compared three routes of administration for experimental injections of the S. parauberis 19FBSPa0003 strain in the olive flounder. Pathological changes were observed during the experimental infection. Inflammation of the serous membrane in the liver, intestine, spleen and heart was the major pathological change found in the infected olive flounder. No mortality was observed in fish that received intraperitoneal (IP) injection at less than 1×104 colony-forming unit (CFU)/fish. The lethal dose 50 for olive flounder, given an intravenous (IV) injection, was 7.94×104 CFU/fish. Fish with a higher concentration of IV injected S. parauberis (1×108 CFU/fish) died within a maximum of two days. However, serious necrosis and bacterial proliferation in ellipsoidal cells of the spleen and heart tissues were found in moribund or dead fish, 1-2 days after IV injection. Similar histopathological signs were observed in olive flounder inoculated by subcutaneous (SC) infected and naturally infected. In addition, SC was also strongly associated with bacteria concentration and cumulative mortality rate. Based on these results, SC is the recommended method for artificial infection by S. parauberis in the olive flounder.

Starry flounder, Platichthys stellatus (body length $4.4{\pm}0.51cm$) that became sick during an outbreak of disease at mariculture facilities at Ulsan, Korea in August of 2012, were examined to identify the cause of the disease. Diseased fish didn't show a unique sign, but the oxidase-positive and gram negative rod was isolated from moribund fish. The bacterium was revealed as Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida by biochemical analysis and sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA and capsular polysaccharide (CPS) genes. The isolates (AD5) was carrying susceptible to ofloxacin and gentamycin and showed high growth value at $18^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ compared to four other P. damsela strains.
We experienced mortality of dark-banded rockfish (Sebastes inermis) maintained in the rearing facility located in Gangneung, after transportation. Moribund fish showed various symptoms such as exophthalmia, skin ulcers, tail rots, gill rots, discoloration of liver with petechiae, yellowish fluid in intestines and ascites. Two different colonies were dominantly appeared after spreading the lesions on the agar plates and incubation. One isolate (SI_1) showed swarming movement on TSA, and formed yellow colonies on TCBS agar. The other (SI_2) showed no swarming motility and green colonies on TCBS agar. Both of them were Gram-negative. All of these results are similar with those of Genus Vibrio. They were identified as V. harveyi and V. gigantis by PCR with subsequent sequencing of 3 different genes (16 rDNA, recA, rpoA). V. harveyi is well-known as a serious pathogen of marine fish and invertebrates, while V. gigantis is known to be often isolated from marine invertebrates, but the pathogenicity is still unknown. We suspect V. harveyi as the cause of the mortality of dark-banded rockfish, but challenge experiments with these 2 Vibrio species are thought to be necessary to make a clear conclusion.
During a study to document more fully the parasitic ciliates of Korean freshwater fishes, we found numerous small ciliates in the gills and skin of crucian carp, Carassius carassius. Cursory examination indicated that the ciliate were very similar with Chilodonella sp. In this study, we described the morphometrics of this ciliate in detail and compared with other species of Chilodonella in the world. Numerous small ciliates were observed in the body surface, fins and gills of infected fish and excessive mucus production were seen in those fish. Sometimes ulcer was observed in the body of moribund fish. From the scrutinized observation of the parasite, it was identified as Chilodonella hexasticha. The parasite was dorsoventrally flattened body, without a notch in the posterior margin, and it measured 30-$45{\mu}m$ long and 15-$30{\mu}m$ wide. In number of kineties, the right band ciliature was 3-5 and the left band ciliature was 3-5. The right ventral ciliary band shaped arch and was longer than the left, straight band. It had a single oval macronucleus, 8-$15{\mu}m$ in diameter, a single micronucleus, 2-$4{\mu}m$ in diameter. The cytopharynx was reinforced by 10-16 conspicuous nematodesmata, which shaped like a tube and curved at its inner end. Two contractile vacuoles, one anteriorly at right and the second posteriorly at left were observed in wet mounts. This parasite reproduced by a simple division at $22{\pm}1^{\circ}C$.
In the late summer of 1990 and 1991, mass mortality occured among cage-cultured grouper, Epinephelus septemfasciatus in south cost of Korea. The moribund fish didn't feed and became pale or dark chestnut colour and irregularly swimmed due to the loss of equilibrium, finally the diseased fish fell down side away on the bottom or the surface of cage showing the bent of body and died. The diseased fish showed the extensive hemorrahge in brain, the swelling of spleen and bile duct as the specific syptoms of internal organs. So the gill, skin and other organs of the diseased fish were examined for the presence of pathogenic parasites and bacteria. The parasitic Trichodina sp. were detected only from the gill lamella of the diseased fish, but these parasites seemed to be not a direct causative agents that induced the gross mortality of the cultured grouper. because these parasites were also observed in normal grouper, yellowtail, red seabream and rock bream co-cultured with the diseased grouper in same or near cages. In the viral examination, although isolation of the causative agent by the use of estabilshed cell Lines, RTG-2 and CHSE-214, was not succeed, the normal grouper inoculated intramuscularly with the filtered homogenate of the organs of the diseased fish showed the same external and internal signs with the naturally infected grouper. They died within a week. By using the naturally and the artificially infected fishes, electron microscopic observation revealed numerous hexagonal or polygonal particles in the cytoplasm of liver cells. Based on the these results, we suggest that the mass mortality of the cultured grouper would be occurred by the infection of a viral agent.

Recently, mass mortality of the young abalone Haliotis discus hannai has occurred in commercial seed production farms in Korea. The mortality rate was above 50% of the total cultured organisms in the farm, and the shell length of the moribund organisms was about 3cm. The mortal phenomenon was that the young abalones were weakly scattered on the bottom of the pond from the attachment matrix, or that they could not be moved back to their normal positions. The diseased farmed Pacific abalone had abdominal edema. From the edema in the moribund individuals, three bacterial strains were isolated and all the strains were identified as Vibrio harveyi. These strains were compared with thirty six strains isolated from the fish. The results was that the Vibrio harveyi from the fish were sorted into genogroup A or B; however, the three strains of the diseased farmed Pacific abalone were sorted into genogroup A and the new genogroup C. The identical mortality and pathological symptoms of the naturally infected organisms were reproduced by artificial infection with WA AG-1 and WA CS-5 strains. The $LD_{50}$ of WA AG-1 and WA CS-5 were each $1.0{\times}10^3cfu\;animal^{-1}$ and $1.7{\times}10^4cfu\;animal^{-1}$.
