This paper presents results from the structural monitoring of a steel wind tower characterized and presented in Part I of the paper. Monitoring period corresponds to about fifteen months of measurements. Results presented refer to stress distribution on shell and in bolts at different heights, stress fatigue spectra, section forces along height evaluated from the stress measurements and comparison with design forces, dynamic response in terms of accelerations, stresses, deflections and rotations.
In an earlier work, we proposed the chromatic dispersion monitoring technique of non-return to zero (NRZ) signal based on clock-frequency component (CFC) through numerical simulations. However, we have not yet shown any experimental demonstration or analytic derivation of it. In this paper, we show an experimental demonstration and analytic derivation of the proposed chromatic dispersion monitoring technique. We confirm that the experimental results and the analytic results correspond with the simulation results. We also demonstrate that monitoring range and accuracy can be improved by using a simple clock-extraction method.
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate performance of self-monitoring of blood glucose and the utilization of results for people with type II diabetes. Method: Data was collected from 177 patients with type II diabetes using a questionnaire from August to September, 2009. Result: Most participants performed self-monitoring of blood glucose in the correct way while some misused the lancet or test strips. In the utilization of results for self-monitoring blood glucose data, 62% of participants always recorded the data, 46% always understood the cause for hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, 25% changed their diet, 23% regulated their exercise-amount, and 11% of participants adjusted the drug dosage. There were significant differences in the performance of self-monitoring of blood glucose and the utilization of results according to the characteristics in the self-monitoring subjects such as awareness of HbA1c, target fasting glucose level, target fasting glucose level 2 hours after meal etc. Conclusion: Systemic self-monitoring of blood glucose education which includes the utilization of self-monitoring of blood glucose needs to be developed for type II diabetic patients.
Condition monitoring technology was applied for an air compressor lubricating system to achieve a proactive maintenance, which could prevent a catastrophic failure and detect root causes of the conditional failure of the system. For this work, various types of wear monitoring technology were used and compared with the results of vibration and temperature measurements. The Results generally showed that every technology has a limitation to failure detection, and integrated-based condition monitoring should be performed for the best results. In this work, an idea for the implementing integrated wear monitoring was suggested and demonstrated.
Usability of soil quality monitoring network for ascertaining soil quality changes was evaluated by analysing soil quality monitoring results. Tolerance limits of soil quality monitoring results from 1997 to 2007 were calculated and compared with Korean soil quality standards. This study determined that soil quality was changed if the upper 95% tolerance limit value was greater than the soil quality standard. Fluoride most frequently exceeded the soil quality standard and nickel, zinc, arsenic, copper, lead and cadmium were followed. Analysis on land use showed that tolerance limits of industrial land use most frequently exceeded the soil quality standards and residential, road and various land uses then frequently exceeded. Tolerance limits of land uses expecting high contaminant loads frequently exceeded the soil quality standards. This fact imply that the soil quality monitoring network generates reasonable data to represent change in Korean soil quality. This study also suggested that representative sampling from well identified points should be done to improve data reliability and accurately ascertain soil quality changes.
Objective: Whereas some studies have suggested that source monitoring is significantly associated with working memory and inhibitory control, both of which are components of executive functioning, other studies have argued otherwise. The author of this study determined that such contradictory findings are a result of heterogeneity in the assessment methods for source monitoring. Therefore, this study aimed at exploring whether the relationships among source monitoring, working memory, and inhibitory control may be altered depending on the differences of source recall conditions. Methods: Eighty children aged 5-8 years saw interesting activities via two different sources. Their source memories on the activity were assessed subsequently. The children were assigned to either the "continuous" source recall group or "non-continuous" source recall group. Both groups participated in working memory and inhibitory control tasks. Results: The results showed that working memory was significantly related to source monitoring regardless of the condition of source recall (continuous vs non-continuous). On the other hand, inhibitory control was significantly associated with source monitoring only in the non-continuous source recall group. Conclusion: Based on these results, the author discussed the need to consider the conditions of source recall during investigative interviews with children in order to induce accurate source monitoring, as part of our effort to interpret the inconsistency of results in the literature and to draw potential applications.
This study aimed to resolve issues in performance monitoring of the ecological sector of the Agricultural Environment Conservation Program through a comparative study of domestic ecological monitoring cases and to identify suitable performance monitoring methods for the project. To achieve this objective, current performance monitoring of the Agricultural Environment Conservation Program was compared and analyzed with domestic ecological monitoring cases to examine their applicability. Research results indicate that domestic ecological monitoring covers a wide range, making it difficult to diagnose the ecological environment at the village level. Therefore, it seems challenging to use these data for evaluating the performance of residents' activities. To accurately assess performances of participating villages in the project, on-site monitoring of the target areas is essential. For this purpose, efforts should be focused on strengthening on-site monitoring through the establishment of collaborative systems. However, domestic ecological monitoring can be utilized for long-term performance monitoring in the Agricultural Environment Conservation Program. By extracting necessary data on agricultural areas through geographic information and particularly by utilizing survey results according to the 'cultivated land ecosystem' type, long-term performance of the project could be evaluated. Accordingly, this study can serve as foundational research for establishing an ecological performance monitoring plan and system suited to the project.

A structural monitoring system based on cheap and wireless monitoring system is investigated in this paper. Due to low-cost and low power consumption, micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) is suitable for wireless monitoring and the use of MEMS and wireless communication can reduce system cost and simplify the installation for structural health monitoring. For system identification using wireless MEMS, a finite element (FE) model updating method through correlation with the initial analytical model of the structure to the measured one is used. The system identification using wireless MEMS is evaluated experimentally using a three storey frame model. Identification results are compared to ones using data measured from traditional accelerometers and results indicate that the system identification using wireless MEMS estimates system parameters with reasonable accuracy. Another smart sensor considered in this paper for structural health monitoring is Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) which is a type of piezoelectric material. PZT patches have been applied for the health monitoring of structures owing to their simultaneous sensing/actuating capability. In this paper, the system identification for building structures by using PZT patches functioning as sensor only is presented. The FE model updating method is applied with the experimental data obtained using PZT patches, and the results are compared to ones obtained using wireless MEMS system. Results indicate that sensing by PZT patches yields reliable system identification results even though limited information is available.
In laser surface hardening processes, the geometrical parameters such as the depth and the width of a hardened layer can be utilized to assess the hardened layer quality. However, accurate monitoring of the geometrical parameters for on-line process control as well as for on-line quality evaluation is very difficult because the hardened layer is formed beneath a material surface and is not visible. Therefore, temperature monitoring of a point of specimen surface has most frequently been used as a process monitoring method. But, a hardened layer depends on the temperature distribution and the thermal history of a specimen during laser surface hardening processing. So, this paper describes the estimation results of the geometric parameters using multi-point surface temperature monitoring. A series of hardening experiments were performed to find the relationships between the geometric parameters and the measured temperature. Estimation results using a neural network show the enhanced effectiveness of multi-point surface temperature monitoring compared to one-point monitoring.
Governmental bodies generally conduct investigations for product safety management once new products are released to the market, in order to prevent distribution of illegal and defective items. Further, market surveillance activities are regularly conducted by the government to ensure distribution of safe products and recall any hazardous products. The safety investigations often involve a consumer monitoring system wherein consumer organizations participate in market monitoring to conduct surveys on illegal and defective products. As a result, the monitoring results of individual consumer organizations are available separately, but an integrated analysis of the data from all consumer organizations cannot be performed, thereby deterring comprehensive evaluation of the consumer monitoring system. In this study, we analyze the individual monitoring results of consumer organizations to understand the overall status and performance of comprehensive market monitoring and present the directions for desirable market surveillance policies. To this end, the effectiveness of market surveillance related to the distribution of products is verified through analysis of the interrelationships between the monitoring processes and performances of consumer organizations as well as their impact on the performances of the monitoring implementation processes; moreover, several improvement points and direction points are presented for more desirable monitoring of the consumer markets.
