The combination of angular spin momentum with electronics is a promising successor to charge-based electronics. The conduction bands in GaAs may become spin-polarized via optical spin pumping, doping with magnetic ions, or induction of a moment with an external magnetic field. We investigated the spin populations in GaAs with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism for each of these three cases. We find strong anti-symmetric lineshapes at the Ga $L_3$ edge indicating conduction band spin splitting, with differences in line width and amplitude depending on the source of spin polarization.

The flow of combustor in scramjet engine is supersonic speed. So residence time and mixing ratio are very important factors for efficient combustion. This study used open cavity on fuel/air mixing model and laser schlieren was carried out to investigate flow characteristics around a jet orifice and a cavity. A source of illumination has 10 ns endurance time so it can observe unsteady flow characteristics efficiently. Pressure was measured by varying momentum flux ratio. And the change of critical ignition point was observed to change of momentum flux ratio.
A numerical modeling has become increasingly popular and more important to the study of water waves with a rapid advancement of computer technology. However, different types of problems are induced during simulating wave motion. One of the key problems is re-reflection to a computation domain at the incident boundary. The internal wave generating-absorbing boundary conditions have been commonly used in numerical wave models to prevent re-reflection. For the Navier-Stokes equations model, the internal wave maker using a mass source function of the continuity equation has been used to generate various types of waves. Nonetheless, almost every numerical experiment is performed in two dimensions and only a few tests have been expanded to three dimensions. More recently, a momentum source function of the Boussinesq equations is applied to generate essentially directional waves in the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations model. In this study, the internal wave maker using a momentum source function is employed to generate targeted linear waves in the three-dimensional LES model.
In the theory of source-driven abyssal circulation, the forcing is usually assumed to be steady source (deep-water formation). In many cases, however, the deep-water formation occurs instantaneously and it is not clear whether the theory can be applied well in this case. An attempt is made to resolve this problem by using a simple reduced gravity model. The model basin has large depth change compared for its size, like the East Sea, such that isobaths nearly coincide with geostrophic contours. Deep-water is formed every year impulsively and flows into the model basin through the boundary. It is found that the circulation driven by the impulsive source is generally the same as that driven by a steady source except that the former has a seasonal fluctuation associated with unsteadiness of forcing. The magnitudes of both the annual average and seasonal fluctuations increase with the rate of deep-water formation. The problem can be approximated to that of linear diffusion of momentum with boundary flux, which well demonstrates the essential feature of abyssal circulation spun-up by periodic impulsive source. Although the model greatly idealizes the real situation, it suggests that abyssal circulation can be driven by a periodic impulsive source in the East Sea.
MCVD(modified chemical vapor deposition) used in making optical-fiber currently utilizes the hydrogen-oxygen burner as a energy supply source. To improve the productivity and to reduce the manufacturing cost of optical-fiber, a natural gas-oxygen burner has been developed. The manufacturing processes of optical-fiber consist of vapor deposition, collapse and drawing processes. Among these processes, the vapor deposition and the collapse processes are important in terms of improving the productivity and saving the production cost. The vapor deposition and collapse processes are performed by combustion heat and flame force supplied by a burner. So the flame force of the burner used in these processes is required to have an optimal and consistent value in order to allow uniform heating and collapse of quartz tube. In this regard, the momentum ratio of natural gas and oxygen has been optimally determined by modification of a burner and the inlet flow pass also has been modified.
Numerical simulations were carried out of the effects of momentum and heat produced by a plasma actuator on neutral flow. Momentum and heat generated during plasma discharge were modeled as a body force and heat source using results of experiments and DSMC of particle. These force and heat model were inserted into a Navier-Stokes equation and the flow around the plasma actuator could be explored by solving fluid dynamics only. Fluid simulation showed that force produced in DSMC generated a jet flow in the vicinity of the plasma actuator and heat accounted for density change.
The mission of a lot of satellites on geostationary orbit is the communication and/or the broadcasting. These satellites need a big power, so these have a large solar array. Recently, the new satellite for Earth environment monitoring is developing on geostationary orbit. The payload of Earth monitoring satellite requires better thermal condition on detector. Therefore this satellite uses a boom for the attitude stability instead of rejecting one-side solar array as a heat source. The other hand, it uses some momentum wheels being a more momentum capacity to control the large disturbance by solar pressure due to the asymmetric solar array configuration. In this paper, the analysis on the wheel allocation and the wheel off-loading for COMS is summarized and the results are verified by telemetry of COMS. COMS has no boom and a perfectly asymmetric solar array configuration, and it is operating well on geostationary orbit.
Water mist fire suppression system utilizes the fire suppression features such as cooling of fire source, dilution of ambient oxygen, and shielding of radiation heat with the evaporation of microscopic water droplets. The momentum of water mist is relatively lower than that of larger water droplet and the infiltration of water mist to the fire source is not effective. Contribution of evaporated water vapor is liable to decline to limited portion of fire source due to its light weight and sparse density. On the other hand, the cycling water mist pattern is expected to improve the penetration force of water mist as well as the air expelling capability with the stratified spray characteristics. At this paper, we present the analyzed fire suppression capability of intermittent water spray pattern by use of FDS which is computational fire dynamics fire model. We expect this analysis can support the basic concept to the development of the prototype of water mist nozzle.

In this paper, the method of introducing additional source/sink terms in the turbulence and momentum transport equations was applied to appropriately model the effect of the tree canopy. At first, the new additional source term for the turbulence frequency ${\omega}$ equation in the SST k-${\omega}$ model was proposed through theoretical analogy. Then the new source/sink term model for the SST k-${\omega}$ model was numerically verified. At last, the proposed source term model was adopted in the wind environment optimal design of the twin high-rise buildings of CABR (China Academy of Building Research). Based on the numerical simulations, the technical measure to ameliorate the wind environment was proposed. Using the new inflow boundary conditions developed in the previous studies, it was concluded that the theoretically reasonable source term model of the SST k-${\omega}$ model was applicable for modeling the tree canopy flow and accurate numerical results are obtained.
