Characterization of Heterochlorella luteoviridis (Trebouxiaceae, Trebouxiophyceae) isolated from the Port of Jeongja in Ulsan, Korea

  • A unicellular green alga was axenically isolated from the Port of Jeongja, Ulsan, Korea. Morphological, molecular, and biochemical analyses revealed that the isolate belonged to Heterochlorella luteoviridis. This is the first report of this species in Korea. The microalgal strain was named as H. luteoviridis MM0014 and its growth, lipid composition, and biomass properties were investigated. The strain thrived over a wide range of temperatures ($5-30^{\circ}C$) and withstood up to 0.5 M NaCl. The results of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis showed that the isolate was rich in nutritionally important polyunsaturated fatty acids. Its major fatty acids were linoleic acid (35.6%) and ${\alpha}$-linolenic acid (16.2%). Thus, this indigenous marine microalga is a potential alternative source of ${\omega}3$ and ${\omega}6$ polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are currently obtained from fish and plant oils. Ultimate analysis indicated that the gross calorific value was $19.7MJ\;kg^{-1}$. In addition, the biomass may serve as an excellent animal feed because of its high protein content (51.5%). Therefore, H. luteoviridis MM0014 shows promise for applications in the production of microalgae-based biochemicals and biomass feedstock.

한국산 전열하무충 속 하모류 2종(유모 문, 하모 목, 전열하모 과)의 재기재 (Redescription of Two Holostichid Species of Genus Holosticha Wrzesniowski 1877 (Ciliophora, Hypotrichida, Holostichidae) from Seoul, Korea)

  • 서울대학교 관악캠퍼스의 이끼로 덮힌 토양에서 채집된 하모류가 Holosticha multistylata Kahl, 1928와 H. sylvatica Foissner, 1982로 밝혀져서 재기재하였다. 기재는 서식처에서 채집된 표본과 배양된 것을 생체로 관찰하고 protargol로 염색하여 섬모하부구조를 관찰한 자료를 통계처리하여 실시하였다. 이 두 종은 한국에서 처음으로 기록되는 종으로 아래의 식별형질로 구분된다. 다구극모전열하모충은 4개의 전방극모, 3개의 구극모와 3개의 구극모와 3개의 등쪽섬모열을 가지는 반면 삼림전열하무충은 7-8개의 전방극모, 1개의 구극모와 5개의 등쪽섬모열을 가진다.

New Record of a Sea Urchin Echinometra mathaei (Echinoidea: Camarodonta: Echinometridae) from Jeju Island, Korea and Its Molecular Analysis

  • Echinoids were collected at depths of 5-10 m in Munseom, Jeju Island by SCUBA diving on November 23, 2008 and September 15, 2009. Two specimens were identified as Echinometra mathaei (Blainville, 1825) based on morphological characteristics and molecular analyses of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I partial sequences. Echinometra mathaei collected from Korea was redescribed with photographs and was compared with other species from GenBank based on molecular data. Phylogenetic analyses showed that no significant differences were between base sequences of E. mathaei from Korea and that from GenBank. To date, 13 echinoids including this species have been reported from Jeju Island, and 32 echinoids have been recorded in Korea.

  • 진도는 해남에서 약 40km 정도 떨어져 있는 상당히 큰 섬으로서 많은 산과 하천이 있고 내륙지역에는 주로 농경지가 많은 특유한 섬이다. 또한 이 지역은 섬이 긴 하지만 물사정이 좋아서 동식물들이 서식하기 좋은 지역이다. 저자들은 1994년 7우러부터 10월까지 진도지역의 개미류를 채집하여 동정한 결과 4아과 15속 21종이 동정되어 보고한다.

  • 흰녹가루병균류(난균류)는 인공배양이 불가능한 순활물 병원균이다. 이들은 많은 속씨식물들에서 흰녹가루병을 일으키는데, 경제적으로 중요한 기주식물로는 해바라기, 와사비, 갓, 유채, 무, 배추, 시금치 등이 있다. 최근에 분자분석 방법과 분류학적으로 유용한 형태적 특징들이 제안되면서, 흰녹가루병균류의 다양성, 진화, 계통분류에 대한 연구에 큰 진척이 있었다. 본 논문은 국내에 덜 알려진 흰녹가루병 균류를 소개하고 최근의 연구성과에 대하여 고찰하였다.

Molecular Systematics of Tephritidae (Insecta : Diptera): Testing Phylogenetic Position of Korean Acidiella spp. (Trypetini) Using Mitochondrial 16S rDNA Sequences

  • Phylogenetic relationships of Korean Acidiella species were tested using mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences. We used 16 published sequences as outgroup, and 10 new sequences for nine Korean Acidiella species as ingroup. The number of aligned sites was 1,281 bp, but 1,135 bp were used for the analysis after excluding sites with missing data or gaps. Among these 1,135 sites, 464 sites were variable and 340 were informative for parsimony analysis. Phylogenetic information was extracted from this data set using neighbor-joining, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony methods and compared to a morphology-based phylogenetic hypothesis. Our molecular data suggest that: (1) the tribe Trypetini appears to be monophyletic even when the nine additional Acidiella species are added to our previous phylogenetic analysis; (2) all the Korean Acidiella species belong to the Trypeta group, but the genus Acidiella is not supported as monophyletic; (3) the close relationship of A. circumvaga, A. issikii, and A. sapporensis is supported; (4) the close relationship of A. pachypogon and two additional new Acidiella species is strongly supported; and (5) the possible presence of two or more cryptic species among the specimens previously identified as A. obscuripennis is suggested. Sequence data from the mitochondrial 16S rDNA allowed us to better understand the systematic status of Korean Acidiella species. They indicated that the current concept about the genus Acidiella is insufficient and needs to be refined further. This study also showed a few interesting relationships, that had not been recognized by morphological study alone. Based on this study, we were able to plan further experiments to analyze relationships within the Trypeta Group.

울릉도 해안 익형아강(연체동물문: 이매패강) (Pteriomorphia (Mollusca : Bivalvia) from Ullng Island , Korea)

  • 1989년 6월부터 1992년 8월까지 울릉도의 13개 지점에서 채집된 해산 이매패류를 조사한 결과 익형아강(Pteriomorphia)에 속하는 9과 33종(아종)이 채집되었다. 이들은 모두 울릉도 미기록 종이며, 이들 중 Modiolus(Modiolus) comptus Sowerby, 1915, Gregariella coralliophaga(Gmelin, 1971), Musculus(Musculus) laevigatus(Gray, 1824), Chlamys(Coralichlamys) jousseaumei Bavay, 1904, Spondylus(Spondylus) varius Sowerby, 1829 등 5종은 한국 미기록종으로 밝혀졌기에 이들을 재기재 하였다.

  • 서울의 한강과 관악산 계류에서 채집하여 실험실에서 배양한 하모섬모충류가 한국 미기록 종인 Paruroleptus lepisma Wenzel, 1953과 Euplotes aediculatus Pierson, 1943으로 밝혀져 형태 및 통계처리에 관한 연구를 실시했다. 서식처에서 채집한 표본과 실험실에서 배양한 것을 각각 생체 과찰하고 Protargol로 염색하여 섬모하부구조를 관찰하고 통계처리를 하였으면 재기재하였따.
