Various Thermodynamic Factors in Designing Nanostructured Materials from Block Copolymers

  • Here, we discuss various thermodynamic factors that affect the design of nanomaterials based on block copolymers. It is well known that the ordering behavior is determined by composition, chain size N, and the ubiquitous Flory. However, the recent discovery of ordering upon heating, immisibility loops, and baroplasticity addresses a clear need for further microscopic interpretation of such. in order to help to design nanomaterials at aimed purposes. Employing a perturbed hard sphere chain model, the molecular factors such as self and cross-interactions, free space distribution, and directional interactions are incorporated in. It is shown that not only typical ordering phenomena, but also the recent observations just mentioned are all described through this unified way.

  • Supramolecualr ordering has been actively studied due to it's possible applications to the fabrication processes of nano-electronic devices. Van der Waals interaction and hydrogen bonding are frequently studied mechanisms for various molecular structures based on non-uniform charge distributions. Halogen atoms in molecules can have electrostatic interactions with similar strength. Big halogen atoms have strong non-uniform charge distributions. To study molecular orderings formed by hydrogen and halogen interactions, we chose a molecular system containing oxygen, hydrogen, and bromine atoms, a bromo-quinone. A two-dimensional molecular network was studied on Au(111) using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. Bromo-quinone molecules form self-assembled square grids having windmill structures. Their molecular orderings, chiral structures, and defects are explained in terms of hydrogen and halogen interactions.

  • The nature of the phase transition in nematic liquid crystalline elastomer is investigated using NMR and calorimetry. The balance between ordering and disordering effects of the polymer network is identified as crucial for the behavior of the order parameter near the phase transition. The change from supercritical to critical regime with adding low molecular weight liquid crystal to the elastomer is proven.

Investigation of adsorption structure for methionine on Ge(100)

  • Adsorption and ordering of methionine molecules on Ge(100) surface have been studied using high resolution photoemission spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) to investigate the adsorption structure as a function of coverage. Analysis of C 1s, S 2p, N 1s, and O 1s core levels reveals quite different according to methionine coverage. We found that the relative population of the two types of thiolates induces a structural change in the ordering from $2\;{\times}\;1$ to $1\;{\times}\;1$. Such an unusual evolution of the methionine adsorption on the Ge(100) surface is discussed in relation to chemical reactions and possible molecular rearrangement on the surface.

수치해석적인 방법으로 규명한 정렬된 단축이방성 분자들의 질서변수와 상대 복굴절의 준선형 관계식 (The Explicitly Quasi-linear Relation Between the Order Parameter and Normalized Birefringence of Aligned Uniaxially Anisotropic Molecules Determined Using a Numerical Method)

  • 액정과 같은 단축 이방성 분자들의 정렬 정도에 따라 달라지는 복굴절으로부터 상대 복굴절 ${\Delta}n_{rel}$를 구하고 ${\Delta}n_{rel}$과 방향질서변수(orientational order parameter) S의 관계를 탐색하였다. 무질서한 분포를 하고 있는 경우를 포함하여 액정의 정렬정도를 달리 표현할 수 있는 분포함수를 도입하고 이 분포함수를 사용하여 질서변수 S가 0부터 1까지 변하도록 액정분자들의 정렬정도를 달리하며 ${\Delta}n_{rel}$과 S를 수치계산 하였다. 이 계산 결과로부터 s와 ${\Delta}n_{rel}$$S=(1+a){\Delta}n_{rel}-a{\Delta}n^2_{rel}$와 같이 준선형적인 관계를 만족하며 a는 $n_o{\frac{{\Delta}n}{4}}$으로 근사할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 복굴절으로부터 Vuks의 방법에 따라 구한 분자분극의 이방성과 Neugebauer의 방법에 따라 구한 분자분극의 이방성이 각각 질서변수 S와 또 다른 준선형 관계식들을 따름을 보였다.

The Molecular Structures of Poly(3-hexylthiophene) Films Determine the Contact Properties at the Electrode/Semiconductor Interface

  • The contact properties between gold and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) films having either of two distinct molecular orientations and orderings were investigated. Thermal treatment increased the molecular ordering of P3HT and remarkably reduced the contact resistance at the electrode/semiconductor interface, which enhanced the electrical performance. This phenomenon was understood in terms of a small degree of metal penetration into the P3HT film as a result of the thermal treatment, which formed a sharp interface at the contact interface between the gold electrode and the organic semiconductor.

  • Some photopolymer, poly(vinyl cinnamoyl acetate)(PVCiA) was synthesized by esterification of polymer(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) with monochloroacetic acid, followed by reaction poly(vinyl monochloroacetate)(PVAhA) and potassium cinnamate. When esterification of PVA with monochloroacetic acid was reacted in the dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO), in the synthesis of PVChA, it is very good yield and the successive cinnamoyl acetoxyl esterification of PVCiA can be successfully synthesized. But PVCiA is low photosensitive polymer if net added photosensitizing dyes. Here, we synthesized photosensitizing dyes.

  • We discuss several key technologies of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) that share common features of all organic displays (AODs). An overview of the morphological effects associated with molecular ordering at interfaces on the Crystallinity and the carrier mobility in organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) is given from the viewpoint of the alignment mechanism for LCDs. Recent progress of improving the carrier mobility in the OTFTs is also reviewed.

New Characterization Methods for Block Copolymers and their Phase Behaviors

  • In this feature article, we briefly review the new methods we have utilized recently in the investigation of morphology and phase behavior of block copolymers. We first describe the chromatographic fractionation method to purify block copolymers from their side products of mainly homopolymers or block copolymer precursors inadvertently terminated upon addition of the next monomer in the sequential anionic polymerization. The chromatographic method is extended to the fractionation of the individual block of diblock copolymers which can yield the diblock copolymer fractions of different composition and molecular weight, which also have narrower distributions in both molecular weight and composition. A more detailed phase diagram could be constructed from the set of block copolymer fractions without the need of acquiring many block copolymers each prepared by anionic polymerization. The fractions with narrow distribution in both molecular weight and composition exhibit better long-range ordering and sharper phase transition. Next, epitaxial relationships between two ordered structures in block copolymer thin film is discussed. We employed the direct visualization method, transmission electron microtomography(TEMT) to scrutinize the grain boundary structure.
