Molecules always show broad absorption band envelopes, and this results from the vibrational properties of bonds. The width of an absorption band can have an important influence on the color of a dye. A narrow band imparts a bright, spectrally pure color to the dye, whereas a broad band can give the same hue, but with a much duller appearance. Typically, half-band widths of cyanine dyes are about 25nm compared to value of over 50nm for typical merocyanine dyes. Thus, cyanine dyes are exceptionally bright. The factors influencing the width of an absorption band can be understood with reference to the Morse curves. The width of the absorption band depends on how closely the bond order of the molecules in the first excited state resembles that in the ground state. We have quantitatively evaluated the "molecular structure-absorption band shape" relationship of dye molecules by means of Pariser-Parr-Pople Molecular Orbital Method(PPP-MO).
Hydrophilic poly(acrylonitrile) [PAN] membrane with good molecular weight cut-off characteristics were prepared by using the phase inversion method. Permeability and molecular weight cut-off of the membranes were measured through the ultrafiltration test. On the surface of the PAN support membranes, poly(acrylic acid) [PAA] was deposited by dip-coating. The water permeability of the PAN support membrane had $0.17~31\textrm{mm}^3/m^{2} \cdot s \cdot Pa$, the molecular weight cut-off 42, 000~150, 000. The transport characteristics of the prepared composite membranes were significantly affected by the variation of the support membrane mophology. The permeability of the composite membrane was decreased with increasing molecular weight cut-off of the support membrane, and the separation factor was slightly changed depending on the feed concentration.

Secreted proteins and membrane proteins play key roles in the formation, differentiation, and maintenance of multicellular organisms. In this study, we undertook to characterize these protein types in the central nervous system of the marine snail Aplysia kurodai using a yeast-based signal sequence trap method. One hundred and three cDNA clones were obtained by screening 300,000 clones from the signal sequence trap cDNA library. Of these, twelve were identical to previously identified Aplysia genes, 19 were related to known proteins in other organisms, and 54 clones were novel. These 54 new genes had high signal peptide scores or were found likely to contain a transmembrane domain sequence. Only 18 of the 103 clones proved to be false positive. The study demonstrates that the signal sequence trap method is an effective tool for Isolating Aplysia genes encoding secreted and membrane proteins.
Molecular sieve membranes separate molecules based on their size and/or shape and have been of high interest, due to their potentially high energy efficiency and high selectivity. Zeolite MFI membrane is one of the most-studied molecular sieve membranes and has affected following studies on other molecular sieve membranes. This review discusses the technical developments on the control of morphology, microstructure, and defect of MFI membranes, which have significantly improved xylene isomer separation performances. These include crystal morphology control, effective secondary growth, seed coating method, crystal orientation control, heteroatom doping, and defect healing method.
Salmonella, a major contributor to foodborne infections, typically causes self-limiting gastroenteritis. However, it is frequently invasive and disseminates across the intestinal epithelium, leading to deadly bacteremia. Although the genus is subdivided into >2,600 serotypes based on their antigenic determinants, only few serotypes are responsible for most human infections. In this study, a rapid dot-blot immunoassay was developed to diagnose multiple Salmonella enterica serotypes with high incidence rates in humans. The feasibility of 10 commercial antibodies (four polyclonal and six monoclonal antibodies) was tested using the 18 serotypes associated with 67.5% Salmonella infection cases in the United States of America (U.S.A) in 2016. Ab 3 (polyclonal; eight of 18 serotypes), Ab 8 (monoclonal; 13 of 18 serotypes), and Ab 9 (monoclonal; 10 of 18 serotypes) antibodies exhibited high detection rates in western blotting and combinations of two antibodies (Ab 3+8, Ab 3+9, and Ab 8+9) were applied to dot-blot assays. The combination of Ab 3+8 identified 15 of the tested 18 serotypes in 3 h, i.e., S. Enteritidis, S. Typhimurium, S. Javiana, S. I 4,[5],12:i:-, S. Infantis, S. Montevideo, S. Braenderup, S. Thompson, S. Saintpaul, S. Heidelberg, S. Oranienburg, S. Bareilly, S. Berta, S. Agona, and S. Anatum, which were responsible for 53.7% Salmonella infections in the U.S. in 2016. This cost-effective and rapid method can be utilized as an on-site colorimetric method for Salmonella detection.

To calculate the induced charge of atoms in molecular dynamics, linear equations for the induced charges need to be solved. As induced charges are determined at each time step, the process involves considerable computational costs. Hence, an efficient method for calculating the induced charge distribution is required when analyzing large systems. This paper introduces the Uzawa method for solving saddle point problems, which occur in linear systems, for the solution of the Lagrange equation with constraints. We apply the accelerated Uzawa algorithm, which reduces computational costs noticeably using the Schur complement and preconditioned conjugate gradient methods, in order to overcome the drawback of the Uzawa parameter, which affects the convergence speed, and increase the efficiency of the matrix operation. Numerical models of molecular dynamics in which two gold nanoparticles are placed under external electric fields reveal that the proposed method provides improved results in terms of both convergence and efficiency. The computational cost was reduced by approximately 1/10 compared to that for the Gaussian elimination method, and fast convergence of the conjugate gradient, as compared to the basic Uzawa method, was verified.
Three different types of chitosan were prepared from red crab shells to study anti-microbial activity of chitosan on pathogenic bacteria, MRSA(Methicillin-resistant. Staphylococcus aureus), Water-insoluble chitosan, whose degree of deacetylation is kept over 90% and molecular weights are 20,000, 500,000, 150,000, 80,000, and 40,000, respectively. Water-soluble chitosan, whose degree of deacetylation is about 48% and molecular weights are 200,000 and 80,000. Water-soluble chitosan, whose degree of deacetylation is 82% and molecular weight is 3,900. The anti-microbial activities of three types of chitosan were investigated by Tube Dilution Technique(TDT) and Agar Plate Smear Method(APSM). And the following conclusions are made ; Chitosan having 5 different types of M.W chitosan (over 90% deacetylation) showed similar anti-microbial activities at over 0.05% concentration. Especially, chitosan having M.W 40,000 150,000 showed the excellent anti-microbial activity. The anti-microbial activity of chitosan was enhanced when the chitosan/acetic add solution was aged for 7days. The anti-microbial activity of chitosan was only shown at chitosan/acetic acid solution. The anti-microbial activity was not detected in chitosan solution dissolved in neutral pH water. Therefore, it can be concluded that the anti-microbial activity was due to NH3+ cationic ion of chitosan in acidic aqueous solution.
Magnetism of molecular nanomagnet, which attracted a lot of academic attention after the discovery of the macroscopic quantum tunneling of magnetism, is reviewed. Molecular nanomagnet is metal-organic material in which magnetic ions are regularly located in the organic skeleton. Also, the interaction between the molecules is very small and those molecules form macroscopic molecular crystal in which molecules are residing at the element points in the crystal. Molecular nanomagnets show a lot of interesting features, especially, equivalence of macroscopic magnetic properties and molecular magnetic properties. In this paper, research results on molecular nanomagnet with microscopic tool like NMR are reviewed mainly. The new method to observe the quantum tunneling of magnetization discovered in Mnl2-ac with NMR is shown and the research results on the microscopic aspects of the macroscopic quantum tunneling of magnetization using the new method are shown. Also, the physical aspect of the level crossing effect which has been reported originally with NMR in molecular nanomagnet is reviewed with experiment results. The research results on the molecular nanomagnets will reveal the important information about the limit of the miniaturization of magnetic memory units and give us the basic scientific knowledge which is needed for the application for the quantum computation. Moreover, academically, many quantum mechanical theories which have not been checked the validity can be checked with experiments.
Low molecular weight species were extracted from PC and SAN by a solvent extraction method in order to investigate the effect of low molecular weight species on interfacial tension and affinity between PC and SAN. From the analysis of molecular weight distribution by the GPC, it was confirmed that the low molecular weight species were effectively eliminated by the solvent extraction. Interfacial tension measurements and morphological observation were carried out with the PC and SAN of which the low molecular weight species were extracted. Interfacial tension was increased and the infinity was decreased for the extracted PC and SAN pair. This result implied that the low molecular weight species play a role as a compatibilizer between two polymers. Among two polymers, low molecular weight SAN contributes more in the compatibilization. Thus, it is favorable to use SAN containing a larger amount of low molecular weight species in fabrication of PC/ABS blend.
