  • This study investigates the characteristics of humic acid before and after ozonation. The results were comapred in such terms as CODCr, CODMn, TOC(total organic carbon) and molecular size distribution. As a result of ozonation (with the dose of 3mgO3/mgHumic Acid), UV NIS absorbance, CODCr, CODMn and TOC were decreased with similar tendency. The mole fraction of high molecular size was rapidly decreased and the fraction ratio of low molecular size was increased through ozone treatment. This fact can be correlated with the change in the difference and the ratio of CODCr and CODMn (the value of CODCr-CODMn and CODMn/CODCr). From this result, it can be inferred that the molecular size and the degree of chemical oxidative degradation of humic acid after ozonation were changed.

  • In copolymerization of methyl acrylate (MA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) with various ratios of MA to MMA and $[CuCl]/[PMDETA]/[PVAc-CCl_{3}]$ catalyst system in bulk at $80^{\circ}C$ via ATRP, several terpolymer with different copolymer composition, were synthesized. The atom transfer radical copolymerization of MA and MMA with macroinitiator, is very sensitive to molecular weight and its distribution. In this work it was possible to calculate the molecular weight of the terpolymers and show that it is close to the experimentally determined number average molecular weight from GPC.

  • Molecular mechanics technique has been used for finding energy-minimized conformation to understand the mechanism of yielding of glassy polymers in atomistic level. As a model polymer, amor- phous isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was generated by molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics methods. The stress-strain cone was successfully obtained by using molecular mechanics technique. The torsional angle distribution showed no significant change during extension, although the torsional angles of certain bonds in polymer backbone changed more largely than other bonds. No significant change in the van der Waals interaction is observed at yielding point, whereas the torsional angle energy starts to decrease at yield strain.

  • The effects of DO and pH on the mass production of pullulan with high-molecular weight from A. pullulans ATCC 42023 were evaluated. The maximum pullulan production yield (51%) was obtained at pH non control (initial pH 6.5) and DO control (above 50%) condition. The pullulan degrading enzyme was activated when the pH of broth reached lower than 5.0 and portion of low molecular weight pullulan was increased. The formation of a black pigment was observed at the initial stationary phase, 40hr of fermentation. Therefore, the fermentation should be carried out in pH non control and DO control condition and harvested before reaching stationary phase around 40h for the production of high molecular weight pullulan.

  • We have studied the statistical properties of turbulence in molecular clouds identified in the Boston University - Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (BU-FCRAO) Galactic Ring Survey (GRS). Toward this end, the probability density function (PDF) and velocity distribution were measured for about 50 molecular clouds. We found there exists a good correlation between the PDF width and the velocity dispersion for these molecular clouds. In order to investigate how general properties of astrophysical turbulence depends on the plasma parameters such as magnetic field strength and sonic Mach number, we performed three-dimensional MHD simulations. We then examined if the observed characteristics of interstellar turbulence are consistent with theoretical results from MHD simulations.

  • The weight average molecular weight of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) synthesized by Alcaligenes sp. SH-69 was altered between $3.2$\times$10^5$ and $1.1$\times$10^6$ depending upon various culture conditions. It appeared that culture conditions favorable for the efficient production of copolyesters promoted the formation of higher molecular weight copolyesters. Polydispersity indices of isolated copolyesters were in the range of 1.5 to 2.5.

  • This study is to find the effect of the molecular weight distribution of components on the freeness and physical properties of paper by observing the change of properties according the modification of fibers by using production technology and process technology together to develop additives which can effectively control according to the purpose of paper-making process and by combining low molecular weight cellulase (below MW 20,000; CMC activity 400 unit) with different enzyme's molecular weight and activity and high molecular weight cellulase(MW 20,000∼80,000;CMC activity 90,000 unit) and then process them in Sw-BKP(Softwood Bleached Kraft Pulp) and Hw-BKP(Hardwood Bleached Kraft Pulp) and Cotton Linter Pulp and OCC(Old Corrugated Container) with different properties of pore of surface of fibers respectively, since it is judged that making the appropriate composition ratio of components is necessary in consideration of the properties of fibers and paper-making process.

  • The present study is numerically and experimentally performed to reveal the pumping characteristics of a helical-type molecular drag pump (HTDP) in the molecular transition flow region. In the experimental study, the pressures are measured simultaneously at the 5 positions along the helical channel of rotor under various conditions of outlet pressure and throughputs, and nitrogen is used as test gas. The outlet pressure is in the range of 26-533 Pa. As results, the local pressure changes are checked corresponding to the various outlet pressure and throughput of HTDP. In the numerical study, Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions are employed (Re< 1000, Kn< 0.1). The local pressure distribution and the pumping speed are calculated. The numerical results are compared with the experimental results. The numerically computed value agrees with the experimental data within an error of approximately 5%.

  • We simulated the conformational changes of polymethacrylates which have side chains with different lengths (methyl and butyl) by molecular dynamics simulation technique. Bulk states of atactic amorphous polymers relaxed at a higher temperature were generated. The chain behaviors of polymethacrylates were investigated upon varying temperatures. Molecular structural information was then obtained by characterizing radial distribution function(RDF), mean square displacement, self diffusion constant, and Connolly surfaces, among others. The estimated self diffusion constants and RDF values of PMMA and PBMA were found to be in good agreement with our expectation in view of the chain flexibility.
