  • The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) is commonly used to characterize the spatial quality of imaging systems. This work is the attempt to measure the MTF for KOMPSAT EOC using the non-parametric method as ground inputs. The spatial performance of the KOMPSAT EOC was analyzed by edge method while in flight using multi-temporal image data collected over test site in Seoul. The results from this work demonstrate the potential applicability of this method to estimate MTF for high spatial resolution satellite KOMPSAT-2 that is being developed to be launched in 2005.

  • The MTF(modulation transfer function) measuring system with a linear CCD(charge coupled-device) was constructed to cvaluate a color CRT(catode ray tube). The measured MTF values were corrected by considering the spectral response and the pixel sizes of CCD. The effects of a spot size, video bandwidth, pitch of shadow mask holes, display luminance, and ambient illumination on image quality were studied. The uniformity of resolution and the contrast Ioss by ambient light of the color CRT monitor were measured, and the results were analyzed by MTFA(modulation threshold area).

  • Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite(COMS) for the hybrid mission of meteorological observation, ocean monitoring, and telecommunication service is planned to be launched onto Geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) in 2008 according to the korea national space program, For the development of the meteorological payload of COMS, imager, the characteristics of Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) for GEO meteorological imager is investigated and the theoretical MTF limit is analyzed for each spectral channel of the imager in the both cases of a currently operating GEO instrument technology and an advanced GEO instrument technology under development. This study shows that MTF value can be considerably low in the infrared channels with longer wavelength than 10㎛ due to diffraction effect so that the MTF performance of long wavelength infrared channels should be paid attention to for the development of the imager.

  • The purpose of the study was to present basic data to evaluation of the spatial resolution for exposure class(EC) in computed radiography(CR) by using the modulation transfer function(MTF). In this study, MTF was measured the edge method by using image plate(IP) of $100{\mu}mm$ pixels. A standard beam quality RQA5 based on an international electro-technical commission(IEC) standard was used to perform the X-ray imaging studies. Digital imaging began to set the sensitivity to EC 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 600, 800, 1200 in X-ray irradiated to IP. The MTF 50% and 10% in the final images was analysis by using an authorized image analysis program the Origin 8.0 and the image J. As a results, the EC 200 was the best spatial resolution at MTF 50% ($1.979{\pm}0.114lp/mm$) and MTF 10% ($3.932{\pm}0.041$). Therefore, the EC 200 could be useful for the diagnosis of diseases that require high spatial resolution such as fractures.

  • We propose a method for evaluating the image quality of color liquid crystal display(LCD) monitors by using the polychromatic modulation transfer function(PMTF), which is calculated from the modulation transfer function(MTF) weighted by the overall color response of the system including the test LCD monitor. We confirm that experimental results using the PMTF agree well with simulated results of the PMTF of a color LCD monitor by using three bar targets with different amplitudes and three elementary colors such as red(R), green(G), and blue(B). As a results, we should choose the PMTF instead of the white color MTF or monochromatic MTF in order to evaluate correctly the image quality of color LCD monitors.

  • The scanning type modulation transfer function (MTF) measurement system of linear charge coupled device (CCD) imagers is fabricated and the MTF of a linear CCD imager is tested. Measured MTF values are very sensitive to small angle knife-edge skew within 1 degree and show different results in several wavelengths. The MTF of the linear CCD imager is measured in different color temperatures of a tungsten filament lamp and the MTF uniformity of ti,t eel) pixels is tested.tested.

  • We studied the method to gain a clear LSF using a thick aluminum sheet and to acquire the spatial resolution value with a high accuracy for a low spatial resolution imaging modality. In this study, aluminum sheets with thicknesses varying from 0.3 mm to 1.2 mm were tested to derive a modulation transfer function (MTF) for the oversampling and non-oversampling methods. The results were evaluated to verify the feasibility of the use of thick sheets for periodic quality assurance. Oversampling was more accurate than non-oversampling, and an aluminum sheet with a correction factor less than 2 at the cut-off frequency, which was less than 0.8 mm in this case, was confirmed to be suitable for MTF measurements. Therefore, MTF derivation from a thick aluminum sheet with thickness correction is plausible for a medical imaging modality.

  • The modulation transfer function (MTF) is a widely used indicator in assessments of remote-sensing image quality. This MTF method is also used to restore information to a standard value to compensate for image degradation caused by atmospheric or satellite jitter effects. In this study, we evaluated MTF values as an image quality indicator for the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI). GOCI was launched in 2010 to monitor the ocean and coastal areas of the Korean peninsula. We evaluated in-orbit MTF value based on the GOCI image having a 500-m spatial resolution in the first time. The pulse method was selected to estimate a point spread function (PSF) with an optimal natural target such as a Seamangeum Seawall. Finally, image restoration was performed with a Wiener filter (WF) to calculate the PSF value required for the optimal regularization parameter. After application of the WF to the target image, MTF value is improved 35.06%, and the compensated image shows more sharpness comparing with the original image.

  • The performance of a staring infrared imaging system can be characterized based on estimating the modulation transfer function (MTF). The slant edge method is a widely used MTF estimation method, which can effectively solve the aliasing problem caused by the discrete undersampling of the infrared focal plane array. However, the traditional slant edge method has some limitations such as the low precision of the edge angle extraction and using the approximate function to fit the edge spread function (ESF), which affects the accuracy of the MTF estimation. In this paper, we propose a modified slant edge method, including an edge angle extraction method that can improve the precision of the edge angle extraction and an ESF fitting algorithm which is based on the transfer function model of the imaging system, to enhance the accuracy of the MTF estimation. This modified slant edge method presents higher estimation accuracy and better immunity to noise and edge angle than other traditional methods, which is demonstrated by the simulation and application experiments operated in our study.
