Prefabricated Modular Buildings are increasingly becoming popular in the construction industry as a method to achieve financially economical buildings in a very short construction time. This increasing demand for modular construction has expanded into multi-storey applications where the effect of lateral loads such as seismic loads becomes critical. However, there is a lack of detailed scientific research that has explored the behaviour of modular buildings and their connection systems against seismic loads. This paper will therefore present the nonlinear time history analysis of a multi-storey modular building against several ground motion records. The critical elements that need special attention in designing a modular building in similar seismic conditions is discussed with a deeper explanation of the behaviour of the overall system.

Fixtures are devided into special purpose fixtures, modular fixtures and general purpose fixtures. In this paper, the database of modual fixtures for flexible manufacturing systems is estabilished. Modular fixtures are classified into base plates, supporting elements, locating elements, clamping elements and accessories. Also the concept for the modular fixture design expert system is proposed.
This paper deals with the robust speed regulation of a surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) that is subject to parametric uncertainties and external disturbances. The proposed approach retains a conventional cascade control configuration composed of an outer-loop speed control module and inner-loop current control modules. Baseline proportional-integral (PI) controllers are designed for nominal modular systems without accounting for the uncertainties to set a desired control performance of the closed-loop system. After studied in both frequency and time domains, a reduced-order proportional-integral observer (PIO), as a modular disturbance observer, is incorporated with each control module to maintain the ideal performance of the modules. Theoretical analysis confirms the desired performance recovery of the augmented system with modular PIOs to the nominal system. Comparative computer simulations and experimental results validate the proposed cascade control method for SPMSM speed regulation.

This paper deals with a performance analysis of real-time control systems, which engages DMR(dual modular redundancy) to detect transient errors and checkpointing technique to tolerate transient errors. Transient errors are caused by transient faults and the most significant type of errors in reliable computer systems. Transient faults are assumed to occur according to a Poisson process and to be detected by a dual modular redundant structure. In addition, an equidistant checkpointing strategy is considered. The probability of the successful task completion in a real-time control system where periodic checkpointing operations are performed during the execution of a real-time control task is derived. Numerical examples show how checkpoiniting scheme influences the probability of task completion. In addition, the result of the analysis is compared with the simulation result.

The appearance of new machine tools with higher flexibility is in need of a basic structure design system for establishing the systematic and rationalized design and manufacturing procedures. In this study. the basic structure design system for machine tools is realized based on the modular construction method. Machine tools are represented as a whole and modular complex with the directed graph, and all possible structural configurations and codes of machine tools for satisfying the machining requirement are derived from the DNA data and connecting patterns of basic structural elements. Especially the structural configurations of machine tools are visualized by the solid modeling techniques and 3-D graphics techniques.
This study presents a new design method of courses and programs for interdisciplinary or customized education in university organizations. The concept of modular design in manufacturing industry is employed for the development of new courses and programs design in university education. Diverse customization methods in service processes or service delivery channels in education are excluded in this study to focus on the research purposes. The results of this study can contribute to the development of a new education system for customized or interdisciplinary education in universities.
This study is the basic research to develop the customized base module for modular road system. A case study was carried out on designs of base module for soft soil condition. Two types of base module was proposed; crossbeam module and crossbeam-pile module. Based on the case study, it was verified crossbeam-pile module is suitable for soft soil condition and the optimum dimension of crossbeam-pile module for modular road system constructed on soft soil was determined. For development of the optimal base modular for modular road system, it is needed in the future to build a data base about ground and roadbed of road construction sites and to classify and systemized base modules according to soil conditions through many case studies.

Due to structural characteristics, construction costs and duration of a modular system would be saved by minimizing the schedule on the job site. As such, it is crucial to develop a connection that can guarantee stiffness while allowing for simple assembling. Particularly, the mid- to high-rise construction of the modular system necessitates the securing of the structural stability and seismic performance of multi-unit frames and connections, and thus, the stiffness of unit-assembled structures needs to be re-evaluated and designed. However, evaluating a frame consisting of slender members and reinforcing materials is a complicated process. Therefore, the present study aims to examine the structural characteristics of a modular unit connection based a method for reinforcing connection brackets and hinges while minimizing the loss of the cross section. Toward this end, the study modeled the beam-to-column connection of a modular system with the proposed connection, and produced a specimen which was used to perform a cycling loading test. The study compared the initial stiffness, the attributes of the hysteretic behavior, and the maximum flexural moment, and observed whether the model acquired the seismic performance, compared to the flexural strength of the steel moment frame connection that is required by the Korean Building Code. The test results showed that the proposed connection produced a similar initial stiffness value to that of the theoretical equation, and its maximum strength exceeded the theoretical strength. Furthermore, the model with a larger ceiling bracket showed higher seismic performance, which was further increased by the reinforcement of the plate.
Analyzing adaptive possibilities of agents in multi-agents system, we have discovered new aspects of ambient intelligence in distributed modular systems using intelligent building blocks (I-BLOCKS) [1]. This paper describes early scientific researches related to technical design, applicable experiments and evaluation of adaptive processing and information interaction among I-BLOCKS allowing users to easily develop ambient intelligence applications. The processing technology presented in this paper is embedded inside each DUPLO1 brick by microprocessor as well as selected sensors and actuators in addition. Behaviors of an I-BLOCKS modular structure are defined by the internal processing functionality of each I-Blocks in such structure and communication capacities between I-BLOCKS. Users of the I-BLOCKS system can do 'programming by building' and thereby create specific functionalities of a modular structure of intelligent artefacts without the need to learn and use traditional programming language. From investigating different effects of modem artificial intelligence, I-BLOCKS we have developed might possibly contain potential possibilities for developing applications in ambient intelligence (AmI) environments. To illustrate these possibilities, the paper presents a range of different experimental scenarios in which I-BLOCKS have been used to set-up reconfigurable modular systems. The paper also reports briefly about earlier experiments of I-BLOCKS in different research fields, allowing users to construct AmI applications by a just defined concept of modular artefacts [3].

The purpose of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis between Korea and the United States of the supply process of unit modular housing at both the factory production phase and the transportation and lifting phase, as part of an attempt to invigorate the unit modular housing market in Korea. Unlike the practice in the United States, one of Korea's unique characteristics is that the floor is constructed with reinforced concrete and hot water heating system. To do this, the wet method in Korea is used that includes concrete placement, curing and constructing hot water floor heating system at the factory production phase, which results in a longer production time and also requires the lifting of heavier loads. In the United States, interior and exterior finishing works of modular housing are performed by different companies, and the distance between the unit module factory and the construction site is quite far. This kind of dualized production structure may cause confusion when it comes to schedule management, procurement management, and stock management. Moreover, problems caused by external environmental factors such as wind and rainfall were reported in the course of long-distance transportation. The results of this case comparison are expected to provide fundamental data that will reduce the amount of trial and error in the unit module production, transportation and lifting work in Korea, which has a comparatively small number of unit modular housing cases.
