A Study on the Modular System in Contemporary Furniture (현대가구에 나타난 모듈라 시스템에 관한 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to apply the modular furniture system, which has been developed actively in western Europe and America since 1970's, to Korean contemporary furniture having converted into western style gradually. The factors requiring the modular furniture system in today's residential environment are as follows; 1. Population increase and urbanization 2. Development of industrial technology 3. Improvement of living condition and change of life style. As these factors increase the problem of diminishing space, multiple functional modular furniture concept has become a solution. Reviewing the current scene of the western modular furniture system, it is classified into modular seating system, mopular wall system, modular commode system and modular storage system. Korean wardrobe, which is am mixed style of traditional and contemporary furniture, should change to a closet eventually because of the grand size and unpractical use of space. Since most Korean family, however, have wardrobes already, it will be necessary to have a turning period to systemized the closet space in Korean residential interior. For the turning period, application of the modular wall system would be one answer to substitute the wardrobe.

  • In Korea, the modular construction method was applied to the construction of facilities such as military barracks and school dormitories, beginning with the pilot project of Seoul New Elementary School in 2003. In 2017, public modular houses were supplied to Busan(Yongho-dong) and Seoul(Gayang-dong), and modular housing is expected to continue to be supplied in the future. However, there is no clear construction standard for the modular housing construction yet, and there are few cases where the infill modular system is applied. Therefore, this study established the work breakdown structure and proposed a standard process focusing on the infill modular system applied to the construction of Dujeong-dong modular house in Cheonan. Level 1 of the work breakdown structure by construction stage of Infill modular was defined as modular manufacturing, assembly, and finishing process. Level 2 was defined as preparation, modular production, modular infill, modular fixing, floor plastering, building finishing, and other site finishing. Level 3 is defined as 57 detailed unit work of infill modular construction. The standard process of infill modular is proposed for the assembly stage that is commonly applicable to infill modular housing construction. The results of this study can be used for the process plan, transportation plan, lifting plan of modular housing construction.

  • Recent research has been ongoing for modular buildings in the country, and interest increases. However, in accordance with legal restrictions in the country with regard to Project Delivery system of Modular Building, the activation of modular buildings industry is obstructed. In Korea, in accordance with national contract law, the construction contract is apply to the project delivery system of modular buildings, and in accordance with Framework Act on the Construction Industry, The project delivery system of modular buildings has to be a separate order. The definition of separate order in contract as defined in the law is that the electric work and Communication work and digestion facility work has to be separate each contract in order to be ensured professionalism. In accordance with law, the project delivery system of modular buildings is that the contract for construction is concluded with the Owner and the Construction Contractor and the contract for goods is concluded with the construction Contractor and modular manufacturer. Due to these project delivery system, the domestic factory production rate when making a modular unit is significantly reduced compared to the rate of factory production abroad and the domestic factory production rate is estimated to 10-20%. Due to the factory production rate is also low, despite what can be done at the factory the workload in construction field increases. According to the workload in field increases, the effect of the schedule reduction can be reduced. It resolved to form a consortium with a modular manufacturer and construction companies or the contract is concluded with Owner, modular manufacturer and construction companies in each. In this paper, we propose a specific project delivery system for modular building to solve the problem of the low factory production rate and the problem of schedule reduction. Through this paper, due to the variety of project delivery system on modular buildings is expected to contribute to the activation of modular buildings.

Support Modular System for Sustainable-Perpetual-Modular Road (지속가능한 장수명 모듈러 도로를 위한 지지 모듈러 시스템)

  • In this study, the performance of the support modular system, as substructure of the proposed sustainable-perpetual modular road system to reduce road construction time and maintenance costs was evaluated. A modular road system consisting of 4 support modular cross-beams with a lower curved surface was constructed on the test-bed. Six load cells and eight LVDTs were installed in the center part of two cross-beam support modular systems. Two loads, 50kN and 100kN, were applied to 15 points on the pavement slab to measure the load and displacement occurring in the modular road system. The measured displacements were less than 1 mm, so it is considered that there was no problem in the stability of the actual road. When comparing the two applied loads and the measured loads in the field test, it was considered that the load transmitted to the ground under the support modular system is very small. It is considered that the modular road system with the support modular system is applicable to the actual road site.

  • This study is about the case study on the application of modular system to the superstructure of floating architecture in Europe. There are many restraints in the onsite construction of floating architecture. Then, various industrialized construction methods are needed to reduce the portion of the onsite construction in floating architecture. Among the various industrialized construction methods, the modular system can be more suitable for floating architecture. At this background, this study analysed the European cases of the application of modular system and classified the types of applied modular system. As a result, this study could classify the three types of modular system, such as, building unit modular, space unit modular and planning concept modular, and define the characteristics of three types by comparing with each other.

  • The productivity of the construction industry is lower than other industries. Modular system is suggested to enhance the productivity of the construction industry. Modular system is a construction method which installs units manufactured in factory on site. It enables to reduce the duration and improve the quality of the constructions. However, the construction technique applied to modular system has not overcome certain structural problems. To solve the problems and motivate the application of modular system, this study propose the hybrid system which use core to resist a lateral force.

  • Recently new construction system, the Infill Modular Construction System, is being emphasized depending on the industrialized technology introduction and the needs of high-rise housing. In order to applicate the Infill Modular Construction System and activate the domestic market, development of insufficient element technologies against the advanced technologies should be preceded and mobile device development of Infill Unit Module which is differentiated from the existing modular construction systems should be needed urgently. As advanced research for the activation of the Infill Modular Construction System, this research aims to develop Infill Unit Module's mobile device. This is expected to improve the constructability of Infill Unit Module. In addition development of mobile device considering weight of Infill Unit Module and construction errors are being planned.

  • Lately the Infill Modular Construction System which meets the domestic standards about the structure and fireproof performance and which is applied to the remodeling techniques is being emphasized. In order to introduce the Infill Modular Construction System to domestic market successfully, the development of insufficient element technologies and systematic analysis of process should be preceded. This research aims to establish of Standard Construction Process, as advanced research for the settlement of the Infill Modular Construction System. As advanced research for the activation of the Infill Modular Construction System, this research aims to develop Infill Unit Module's mobile device. This is expected to improve work efficiency. In addition organizing optimized Standard Construction Process by steady work analysis and improvement is being planned.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest more efficient modular units of the storage furniture system based on the two previous studies of the apartments storage furniture. This study is also to show the ways and means of making practical use of the results which come from the previous studies. The specific purpose of this study is, 1. To establish the modular furniture system minimizing the dead space, using investigation results of the bedroom size of existing apartments. 2. To establish the modular furniture system maximizing the storage space with utmost efficiency, based on the results of the actual storage condition from the previous research. 3. To suggest a case study of the different modular furniture system suiting 6 different bedroom sizes with the utmost efficiency, based on the results of above two purpose. On the bases of these research results, the design of various units of modular system furniture for bedrooms were suggested.

Seismic Performance Assessment of a Modular System with Composite Section (합성단면을 적용한 모듈러 시스템의 내진 성능평가)

  • By producing pre-engineered modular system in the factory, It is enable to expedite construction and can be distinguished from two types by the method resisting load. One is the open-sided modular system composed of beams and columns. The other is enclosed modular system composed of panels and studs. Of the modular systems, the open-sided modular system buildings the connection between modules are difficult due to closed member sections, and the overall strength is reduced as a result of local buckling. In this study, in order to solve these problems, a modular system with folded steel members filled with concrete are proposed. The capacity spectrum method presented in ATC 40 is used for seismic performance assessment of the proposed model structure and the structure with conventional steel members. The analysis results show that at the performance point of each model the number and rotation of plastic hinge formed in the proposed modular system are smaller than those in the conventional system. Based on this observation it is concluded that the proposed system with composite sections has superior seismic capacity compared with conventional system.
