Design and modelling of pre-cast steel-concrete composites for resilient railway track slabs

  • Australian railway networks possess a large amount of aging timber components and need to replace them in excess of 280 thousands $m^3$ per year. The relatively high turnover of timber sleepers (crossties in a plain track), bearers (skeleton ties in a turnout), and transoms (bridge cross beams) is responsible for producing greenhouse gas emissions 6 times greater than an equivalent reinforced concrete counterparts. This paper presents an innovative solution for the replacement of aging timber transoms installed on existing railway bridges along with the incorporation of a continuous walkway platform, which is proven to provide environmental, safety and financial benefits. Recent developments for alternative composite materials to replace timber components in railway infrastructure construction and maintenance demonstrate some compatibility issues with track stiffness as well as structural and geometrical track systems. Structural concrete are generally used for new railway bridges where the comparatively thicker and heavier fixed slab track systems can be accommodated. This study firstly demonstrates a novel and resilient alterative by incorporating steel-concrete composite slab theory and combines the capabilities of being precast and modulated, in order to reduce the depth, weight and required installation time relative to conventional concrete direct-fixation track slab systems. Clear benefits of the new steel-concrete composites are the maintainability and constructability, especially for existing railway bridges (or brown fields). Critical considerations in the design and finite element modelling for performance benchmarking of composite structures and their failure modes are highlighted in this paper, altogether with risks, compatibilities and compliances.

레이스터 인서션 Backbone 링 네트워크에 관한 연구 (A Design of a Register Insertion Backbone Ring Network)

  • 본 논문은 레지스터 인서션 링 구조를 사용한 Backbone 네트워크의 디자인에 관하여 연구하였다. 고속의 레지스터 인서션 Backbone 링 네트워크는 적은 비용으로 간단한 모듈라 구조와 Concurrent Communication을 통하여 네트워크간의 빠른 속도의 데이타 통신을 가능케하여 준다. 큰 네트워크를 형성하기 위하여 국부 지역 통신망(근거리 통신망, Local Area Network:LAN)들과 접속되어 있는 브릿지 노드들이 Pint-to-Point로 연결되어 레지스터 인서선 Backbone링을 형성한다. 본 논문에서 제안된 브릿지 노드는 불필요하게 데이타 메시지가 링으로 유입되는 것을 막기 위하여 Local Address Filtering을 하여 Backbone링의 통신량을 현저하게 줄이며, Remote Adress Filtering을 하여 LAN 세그먼트내의 통신량을 감소시키므로 그 성능 특성을 극대화 시킨다. 또한 본 논ㅁ누에서는 네트워크의 Reconfiguration을 쉽게 하기 위하여 자동 학습 기능이 고안되었다. 그리고 Throushput 분석에 의해서 Backbone 링에 사용되는 전송매체의 Bandwidth를 예측하여 설계하는 방법이 연구되었다.

Flexible smart sensor framework for autonomous structural health monitoring

  • Wireless smart sensors enable new approaches to improve structural health monitoring (SHM) practices through the use of distributed data processing. Such an approach is scalable to the large number of sensor nodes required for high-fidelity modal analysis and damage detection. While much of the technology associated with smart sensors has been available for nearly a decade, there have been limited numbers of fulls-cale implementations due to the lack of critical hardware and software elements. This research develops a flexible wireless smart sensor framework for full-scale, autonomous SHM that integrates the necessary software and hardware while addressing key implementation requirements. The Imote2 smart sensor platform is employed, providing the computation and communication resources that support demanding sensor network applications such as SHM of civil infrastructure. A multi-metric Imote2 sensor board with onboard signal processing specifically designed for SHM applications has been designed and validated. The framework software is based on a service-oriented architecture that is modular, reusable and extensible, thus allowing engineers to more readily realize the potential of smart sensor technology. Flexible network management software combines a sleep/wake cycle for enhanced power efficiency with threshold detection for triggering network wide operations such as synchronized sensing or decentralized modal analysis. The framework developed in this research has been validated on a full-scale a cable-stayed bridge in South Korea.

Design and performance validation of a wireless sensing unit for structural monitoring applications

  • There exists a clear need to monitor the performance of civil structures over their operational lives. Current commercial monitoring systems suffer from various technological and economic limitations that prevent their widespread adoption. The wires used to route measurements from system sensors to the centralized data server represent one of the greatest limitations since they are physically vulnerable and expensive from an installation and maintenance standpoint. In lieu of cables, the introduction of low-cost wireless communications is proposed. The result is the design of a prototype wireless sensing unit that can serve as the fundamental building block of wireless modular monitoring systems (WiMMS). An additional feature of the wireless sensing unit is the incorporation of computational power in the form of state-of-art microcontrollers. The prototype unit is validated with a series of laboratory and field tests. The Alamosa Canyon Bridge is employed to serve as a full-scale benchmark structure to validate the performance of the wireless sensing unit in the field. A traditional cable-based monitoring system is installed in parallel with the wireless sensing units for performance comparison.

강재매입형 조립식 합성교각의 설계 변수 영향 (Effects of Design Parameters of Steel-Embedded Precast Composite Piers)

  • 강재매입형 합성교각은 단면 자체의 설계 변수의 다양성을 통해 요구하는 성능을 만족하도록 할 수 있는 유연성을 갖고 있다. 급속시공을 위한 합성교각의 설계를 위해서 작은 규모에서는 볼트 연결을 통한 조립식 구조물이 가능하고 큰 규모에서는 세그먼트를 분리하여 시공하고 포스트 텐션을 도입하는 방식을 사용할 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 합성교각의 실험적 결과를 비교 분석하여 강재 매입형 조립식 합성교각의 설계 변수가 거동에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 이를 통해서 교각의 설계 여건에 따른 적합한 설계 단면 설정 및 일체화 방안을 제안하였다. 조립식 시공을 위해서는 적절한 중량 규모에 따른 단면 분할이 필요하고 제작 및 시공 오차 보정을 위한 별도의 상세가 요구된다. 또한, 코핑부를 포함한 경우에는 교각 세그먼트와 코핑부와의 연결 상세를 함께 고려해야 하기 때문에 이를 위한 연결상세를 제시하였다.

온도하중과 인양하중에 영향을 받는 모듈러 도로 슬래브 수직연결부의 상세해석 (Detailed Analysis of Vertical Connector in Modular Roadway Slab Under Temperature and Lifting Loading)

  • 교량의 슬래브에 파손이 발생할 경우 슬래브의 보수보강을 위한 공사로 인해 차량 통행이 제한된다. 모듈러 교량의 경우 이러한 시간적 비용을 줄일 수 있는 방법으로서 많은 연구가 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 연결부에 높은 응력이 발생하는 모듈러 도로 슬래브를 온도하중과 차량하중을 적용하여 구조해석을 실시하였으며 수직연결부 부근에 나선철근을 매입하여 그 성능을 확인하였다. 또한 인양 시의 모듈러 도로 슬래브의 거동 및 취약부분을 확인하기 위하여 인양하중을 적용한 구조해석을 실시하여 유리한 조건의 인양방법을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 온도하중에 의해 수직연결부가 항복하는 것이 확인되었으며, 나선철근을 수직연결부 부분에 매립할 경우 인양 시에 구조물의 손상이 감소하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 6개 수직연결부를 이용하여 인양할 시 3개 수직연결부 사용대비 50%의 응력을 감소시킬 수 있는 것으로 확인되었다.

Input-Series-Output-Parallel Connected DC/DC Converter for a Photovoltaic PCS with High Efficiency under a Wide Load Range

  • This paper proposes an input-series-output-parallel connected ZVS full bridge converter with interleaved control for photovoltaic power conditioning systems (PV PCS). The input-series connection enables a fully modular power-system architecture, where low voltage and standard power modules can be connected in any combination at the input and/or at the output, to realize any given specifications. Further, the input-series connection enables the use of low-voltage MOSFETs that are optimized for a very low RDSON, thus, resulting in lower conduction losses. The system costs decrease due to the reduced current, and the volumes of the output filters due to the interleaving technique. A topology for a photovoltaic (PV) dc/dc converter that can dramatically reduce the power rating and increase the efficiency of a PV system by analyzing the PV module characteristics is proposed. The control scheme, consisting of an output voltage loop, a current loop and input voltage balancing loops, is proposed to achieve input voltage sharing and output current sharing. The total PV system is implemented for a 10-kW PV power conditioning system (PCS). This system has a dc/dc converter with a 3.6-kW power rating. It is only one-third of the total PV PCS power. A 3.6-kW prototype PV dc/dc converter is introduced to experimentally verify the proposed topology. In addition, experimental results show that the proposed topology exhibits good performance.
