Development of an Optimum Hull Form for a Container Ship with Minimum Wave Resistance (최소 조파저항을 가지는 컨테이너선의 선형최적화 기법에 대한 연구)

  • This paper presents the method for developing an optimum hull form with minimum wave resistance using SQP(sequential quadratic programming) as an optimization technique. The wave resistance is evaluated by a Rankine source panel method with non-linear free surface conditions and the ITTC 1957 friction line is used to predict the frictional resistance coefficient. The geometry of the hull surface is represented and modified using B-spline surface patches. The optimization method is applied to Series 60 hull and KCS(KRISO 3600 TEU Container Ship). The obtained results prove that the method is appropriate for preliminary hull form design.

  • This paper presents the method for developing an optimum hull form with minimum wave resistance using SQP( sequential quadratic programming) as an optimization technique. The wave resistance is evaluated by a Rankine source panel method with non-linear free surface conditions and the ITTC 1957 friction line is used to predict the frictional resistance coefficient. The geometry of the hull surface is represented and modified using NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) surface patches. To verify the validity of the developed program the numerical calculations for Wigley hull and Series 60 Cb=0.6 hull are performed and the results obtained after the numerical calculations are compared with the initial hulls.

Studies on the Contents of Naturally Occurring of Sulfite in Foods (식품중 천연유래 이산화황 함유량에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to compare optimum analytical method for the contents of naturally occurring sulfur dioxide in foods and to investigate the contents of sulfur dioxide in foods in order to provide a fundamental data when distinguish between added and naturally occurring sulfur dioxide. The determination of the contents of sulfur dioxide in foods from the 20 kinds, 180 cases of samples has been analyzed by the optimized Monier-Williams method, modified Rankine method and Acid Distillation/Ion Chromatography. As a result of the study, the contents of naturally occurring sulfur dioxide in foods by the optimized Monier-Williams method showed from 1.02 to 43.87 ppm and highly content of 43.87, 15.37, 11.50, 11.21 and 10.60ppm were observed in garlic, platicodon, green onion, cabbage and onion, the others were less than 10.00ppm. The sulfur dioxide contents in green onion and garlic by modified Rankine method were showed to be 2.87 and 6.14ppm, respectively, the others were detected less than 2.50ppm. The contents of sulfur dioxide by Acid Distillation/Ion Chromatography showed 15.43, 9.82, 5.74, 5.37, 2.14 and 0.49ppm in garlic, cabbage, green onion, onion, potato and apple, respectively and the others were not detected. And the contents of sulfur dioxide in green onion, onion, cabbage and garlic showed higher levels of sulfur dioxide in these foods than the others because of the naturally occurring sulfur containing compounds. The optimized Monier-Williams method, which is the of official analytical method of Korean Food Code, was suitable for monitoring of sulfur dioxide of most foods. Acid Distillation/Ion Chromatography was thought to be adequate for sulfur containing foods such as green onion, onion and cabbage. In order to distinguish between added and naturally occurring sulfur dioxide, it is though to be need of the fundamental data for the contents of sulfur dioxide in sulfite-free foods and continue the investigation for it.

  • Fundamental Study for optimizing ship hull form using SQP(sequential quadratic programming) method in a resistance point of view is presented. The Wigley hull is used as an initial hull and numerical calculations are carried out according to various froude numbers. To obtain the ship resistance the wave resistance is evaluated by a Rankine source panel method with nonlinear free surface conditions and the ITTC 1957 friction line is used to predict the frictional resistance coefficient. The geometry of a hull surface is represented and modified by B-spline surface patch. The displacement and the waterplane transverse 2nd moment of inertia of the hull is fixed during the optimization process. And the shp design program called EzHULL is used to draw the lines of the optimized hull form to perform the model test.

  • In this paper, the towing force is calculated for the LNG bunker barge. LNG bunkering barge is being developed as an infrastructure for the bunkering of LNG(Liquefied Natural Gas), an eco-friendly energy source. In the case of the LNG bunker barge, a self-propulsion is considered through retrofit from an operating point. Therefore, the LNG bunker barge is similar to the shape of the ship as compared to a towed barge, so a rule of the towed barge overestimates the towing force. In order to improve accuracy, the calm water resistance is calculated according to the ITTC 1978 method considering the wave resistance by the Rankine source method. The added resistance in waves is calculated using the modified radiated energy method considering the shortwave correction method of NMRI. The performance of the towing resistances through the calm water resistance and the added resistance in waves was compared with rules of the towed barge.

A Study on the Application of Lateral Earth Pressure to Earth Retaining Wall Considering Ground Characteristics in Jeju II - Case of Earth Anchor Construction - (제주 지역의 지반 특성을 고려한 흙막이벽의 측방토압 적용에 관한 연구 II -어스앵커 공법 시공 사례-)

  • This paper describes the comparative results of measured and predicted values for the horizontal displacement of earth retaining wall based on two field cases, in order to evaluate the application of lateral earth pressure to earth retaining wall supported by earth anchor in Jeju. The prediction of lateral earth pressure acting on the earth retaining wall was performed by elasto-plastic analysis using Rankine earth pressure, Hong & Yun lateral earth pressure, Terzaghi & Peck modified lateral earth pressure, and Tschebotarioff lateral earth pressure. As a result, the predicted value of the maximum horizontal displacement for site A was about 10 to 12 times greater than the measured value, and in the case of site B, the predicted value was evaluated as about 9 to 12 times greater than the measured value. That is, both sites showed a similar increase rate in the maximum horizontal displacement by the predicted value compared to the measured value. In all field construction cases, the maximum horizontal displacement by measured values occurred in the sedimentary layer, soft rock layer, and clinker layer, and the horizontal displacement distribution was shown in a trapezoidal shape. The maximum horizontal displacement by the predicted value occurred around the clinker layer, and the horizontal displacement distribution was elliptical. In the ground with a clinker layer, the measured value showed a very different horizontal displacement tendency from the predicted value, because the clinker layer exists in the form of a rock layer and continuous layer. In other words, it is unreasonable to apply the existing prediction method, which is overestimated, because the characteristics of the earth pressure distribution in Jeju show a tendency to be quite different from the predicted earth pressure distribution. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a research on the lateral earth pressure in the realistic Jeju that can secure more economic efficiency.

As a result, it was confirmed that the maximum horizontal displacement predicted at site A was about 5 times larger than the measured value, and the ground with maximum horizontal displacement occurred by the prediction was found to be the clinker layer. In the case of site B, the predicted value was 4 to 7 times larger than the measured value. In addition, the ground with maximum horizontal displacement and the tendency of horizontal displacement were very different depending on the prediction method. This means that research on lateral earth pressure that can consider regional characteristics needs to be continued, because it is due to the multi-layered ground characteristics of the Jeju area in which bedrock layers and clinker layers are alternately distributed,
