  • Modern public museums are expanding its role as general cultural facilities. Therefore, the museums that are equipped with convenient and physical environmental features for all ages and types of users are needed. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the application of universal design in common space of the museums and to recommend a set of environmental improvement plans based on which various types of users can decide their choice of museums based on available data on the museums. The scope of this research was limited to seven major public museums located in Seoul, Korea. The spatial scope that was set for this research was common space of the public museums and the scope of the content was about the applicability of universal design. As a result of the research, three major conclusions were reached. First, the application of universal design toward common space in the public museums currently was not prevalent. Second, constant management and application development of universal design are needed. Third, as museums' primary roles and functions become more diverse, a direct application of delicate universal design is a necessary prerequisite to accommodate and fulfill users' needs.

  • While the classical theory of Griffith is the foundation of modern understanding of brittle fracture, it has a number of significant shortcomings: Griffith theory does not predict crack initiation and path and it suffers from the presence of unphysical stress singularities. In 1998, Francfort and Marigo presented an energy functional minimization method, where the crack (or its absence) as well as its path are part of the problem's solution. The energy functionals act on spaces of functions of bounded variations, where the cracks are related to the discontinuity sets of such functions. The new model presented here uses modified energy functionals to account for molecular interactions in the vicinity of crack tips, resulting in Barenblatt cohesive forces, such that the model becomes free of stress singularities. This is done in a physically consistent way using recently published concepts of Sinclair. Here, for the consistency of the model, it becomes necessary to allow for crack reversibility and to consider local minimizers of the energy functionals. The latter is achieved by introducing different time scales. The model is solved in its global as well as in its local version for a simple one-dimensional example, showing that local minimization is necessary to yield a physically reasonable result.

  • The binary classification, Yin & Yang, can be shown in our culture. Yin & Yang thinking reveals the Up/Down (Principal/Subordinate) relation in space, and Before/After relation in time, and it shows the sequence of Contrast${\to}$Reconciliation & Unification${\to}$Contrast. For example, a follower is Yin against King, while Yang as a father against his son in our trational cognitive structure. With Left/Right, Front/Rear, and Upper/Lower, In/Out division is a basic body-space term to grasp the space position. In the traditional Korean house, when we go out from the deepest 'In', Anbang to Daechung, we may call Anbang 'In' and Daechung 'Out'. When from Daechung to Anmadang reversely, we call Daechung 'In' and Anmadang 'Out'. Namely, Daechung is both 'In' and 'Out'. This is a fallacy logic in view of western basic conception. 'The In/Out Structure, system of a series of inner spaces, is defined as a transformation of cognitive structure of Yin & Yang thinking to the Korean architectural space. The space structure is one of the important deep structure in Korean society.' The concept of the space structure, apperred in east Asia, can make humane space, for it is not a physical 'type' of typepology but related to cognitive structure of human thinking, The structure is applicable to space design in modern society, for the cognitive structure exists in living culture by transformation.

  • Presentation is the way of revealing regionality that is hidden into the inner world. The expression of regionality has to be based on the origin and at the same time created newness as always suitable for the present through combination of 'familiarity' and 'unfamiliarity'. Regionality that has been maintained even under the application modern trends, spirits, technologies and materials should be now disclosed. Creating new forms that reflect regionality is possible only when a keen sense(emotion) always focusing on the essence of the earth works together with foresight(imaginative power) clarifying global pattern changes, under high tensions between both of them. Kim Su-Keun succeeded in reinterpreting traditional spaces, but failed in communicating patterns of life, ultimately revealing stiffness with no tension and no creativity. Kim Jung-Up could not draw out a whole meaning of relations among traditional fragments or relations between them and the present. He only borrowed such fragments from the view of formative art. For 'disclosed abstract', 'familiarity' and 'unfamiliarity' are repeated circularly and cope with pattern changes, continuously creating new forms and showing unity as a complete calmness(rest). In "YangDuk Catholic Church" by Kim Su-Keun provides a simultaneous reactivation of various images through continuous cross-weaving rather than being inclined to either the earth or the world. Based on the technique of 'disclosed abstract', "YangDuk Catholic Church" created a new form and space never seen before.

  • As it gets nearer to the modern society, social and cultural situations are changing and the spatial form of public space is changing into the complex structure where it is interlinked with each other diversely. In particular, as the development of large-scale complex spreads nationwide, the form of complex commercial space assuming the nature of malls appears prominently. In such a large-scale complex commercial space, the diverse visual elements make the environment difficult to be perceived. Like this, the attention in the commercial space where a variety of visual stimuli are in the presence, is important element, so the plan of VP(visual presentation) is needed for effectively selecting or inducing the space. Thus, in this study, human visual and perception process will be reviewed and a method to evaluate the attention will be proposed. Also, the attention of each stores in the complex commercial spaces will be evaluated to propose the indicators for resonable spatial panning in the future.

  • The change of modern society arouse the issue of the family structure and the demand of upbringing. According to the issue, the need of the upbringing is the big interest in society. This study is on the demand of the parents of students in eco-environmental space in child care center. The purpose of the study makes the suggestion the need of the eco-environmental space in child care center. The study progressed with looking up and giving questionaires in six child care centers which have eco-environmental space in Seoul. 210 questionaires were given out to parents and taken away 180 questionaires. The result of the study, parents required strongly to have the eco-environmental space in child care center. The natural interior materials, nature experimental outdoor ground and exterior garden were preferred overriding. The use of the woods and stones and eco-environmental adhesives are required as the natural Interior materials. And the natural light source can be imported in sky light, side window and atrium. Upcoming study would be directed in child care center without eco-environmental spaces. The next suggestion would be made in the needs of the eco-environmental space in child care center.

  • Porous media consist of physically and chemically different materials and have an extremely complicated behavior due to the different material properties of each of its constituents. In addition, the internal structure of porous materials has generally a complex geometry that makes the description of its mechanical behavior quite complex. Thus, classical continuum mechanics cannot explain the behavior of materials with pore spaces, such as concrete, soils and organic materials in waste landfill. For these reasons, porous media theory has been developed in the nineteenth century. Biot had the greatest influence on the development of porous media theory. Biot's work has been referred by many authors in the literature. Development of numerous fundamental equations in porous media theory were made possible due to Biot's work. His contributions made the greatest influence on porous media theory. Therefore, it is highly advantageous to review Biot's publications. This work presents a review of Biot's work. It shows how porous media theory has been developing so far and provides a chance to discuss the contribution of his work to the modern porous media theory.

  • Günter Behnisch is one of the architects who played a major role as a pioneer of German modern architecture after World War II. After experiencing the era of the oppression of the Nazi right-wing national socialist, he tried to break away from the high-pressure and arrogant architecture to control everything in the building and to create a building that was born in a democratic way of thinking. He thought that architecture showed us the way we treat ourselves and the world, and that architecture formed our world view backwards. In this way, architects can express their way of thinking about their society through their works. Behnisch judged that the educational facility was the most appropriate use for implementing his democratic mindset. He hoped that this would give students the characteristics of democracy through architecture. Schools are a place where small society is experienced, and it is thought to be a medium for him to implement democratic thinking in school architecture. This study analyzed the educational facilities of Behnisch by deriving the analysis elements through the educational space organization reflecting Prakash Nair's educational facilities and educational theory and his architectural philosophy. The various plans, sections and spaces, which are characteristics of the his school facilities analyzed in this study, are expected to be helpful as data for presenting variety to many educational facilities in Korea.

  • To design and construct a museum of art involves the interest of artists, architects, curatorship, management, and local government. More than this direct relationship, museum obliges the public a mission of delivering genuine public experience through art and architecture. However, most of Modern and contemporary architecture has not delivered genuine public experience of integrated art and architecture. Conceptual message of art and perceptual architectural exhibition space has not been integrated easily. Picture frame canvas initiated this schism and institutionalized museum management hampered the creativity of artists. This schism was overcome through artists' questioning of museum culture and creative works that embrace work and its environment. In contemporary culture, installation art and media art necessitates a new museum format which needs not only exhibition, but laboratory and interface space with viewers. This paper will regroup the existing museum according to its use and strategy, and reinterpret progressive museums that fosters young artists, and more than this, will introduce successfully established museums for new forms of art, which are equipped with versatile exhibition spaces, innovative interface between works and viewers, and own laboratory that can produce works of art. These examples will envision a creative method of art and architecture production that can achieve genuine public experience.

  • In the modern age, as man's demand of energy is continuously grew, tidal becomes one of the sustainable energy sources that have been investigating thoroughly recently. Tidal turbine has proved high potential as a future power-generating device. To effectively capture tidal energy on site, a group of tidal turbines should be used and positioned in some formation with proper size and space so that energy can be absorbed from multiple point. Thus, the turbines together with the flow filed becomes a huge domain, a tidal farm. So, it becomes more convenient if a whole turbine farm is simulated by means of actuator discs since the time and cost for analysis can be reduced. This paper aims to evaluate the operating performance (power efficiency and energy restoration rate), mutual influence (for different longitudinal and lateral spaces), the influence of velocity profiles, turbulence intensity and the far wake characteristic of tidal turbines operating in farm formation. The results of this study help contributing to the present development of tidal turbine as the future potential energy conversion machinery.
