  • Smart base isolation systems developed for structures in high seismic regions cannot be directly applied to structures in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity, such as Korea. Therefore, the problems that occur by applying the smart base isolation system for high seismic regions to the structures in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity have been investigated in this study. To this end, a five-story building is used as an example, and an MR damper and low damping elastomeric bearings were used to compose a smart base isolation system. Artificial earthquakes are simulated for ground motions in regions of high and low-to-moderate seismicity. Based on numerical simulation results, the MR damper capacity that can provide good control is quite different among regions of high and low-to-moderate seismicity. Moreover, it is noted that the properties of a smart base isolation system for the regions of low-to-moderate seismicity should be carefully designed because the base isolation effects of the smart base isolation system for high seismic regions deteriorate when it is applied to the structures in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity.

  • Purpose: Minimal incision distal metatarsal osteotomy (MIDMO) is known to be an effective surgical procedure for mild to moderate hallux valgus. However, the result of MIDMO on moderate to severe hallux valgus is controversial; therefore, we investigated the radiological and clinical results of MIDMO on moderate to severe hallux valgus. Materials and Methods: We reviewed 51 feet (48 patients) with moderate to severe hallux valgus. The mean age was 67.0 years and the mean follow-up period was 32.2 months. Radiological data of hallux valgus angle, first intermetatarsal angle, and distal metatarsal articular angle on plain radiographs were analyzed. Recurrence, union, lateral translation of distal fragment and angulation were also analyzed. The clinical data were obtained using American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score of preoperation and last follow-up. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine a cut-off value. Results: The mean hallux valgus angle measured at preoperation was $37.7^{\circ}$ and $15.9^{\circ}$ at last follow-up. The mean first intermetatarsal angle of preoperation and last follow-up were $15.2^{\circ}$ and $8.3^{\circ}$. The mean distal metatarsal articular angle changed from $12.6^{\circ}$ at preoperation to $7.8^{\circ}$ at last follow-up. Preoperative hallux valgus angle (p=0.0051) and distal metatarsal articular angle (p=0.0078) were statistically significant factors affecting postoperative AOFAS score. Cut-off value of each was $37^{\circ}$ and 13o, respectively. Lateral translation of distal fragment in 5 recurrent cases was 23.0% compared to 45.3% of 46 non-recurrent cases. The result was statistically significant and the cut-off value was 38%. Conclusion: Sufficient lateral translation over 38% in MIDMO on moderate to severe hallux valgus patients with preoperative hallux valgus angle under $37^{\circ}$ and distal metatarsal articular angle under $13^{\circ}$ can lead to good clinical results without recurrence.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of physical activity on smoking experience and smoking intensity in Korean high school students. Methods: This cross sectional study used secondary data from the 2013 Adolescent Health Behavior Online Survey. A total of 35,905 high school students were included in the study. Logistic regression was used for analysis of the influence of moderate and vigorous physical activity on smoking experience in a month and smoking intensity. Results: Adolescents with low (Adjusted OR: 1.242, 95% CI: 1.075~1.436) and moderate level (Adjusted OR: 1.094, 95% CI: 1.005~1.189) of moderate physical activity had more smoking experience than reference group, high level of physical activity. Also, smoking experience was more prevalent adolescents with low (Adjusted OR: 1.191, 95% CI: 1.064~1.333) and moderate level (Adjusted OR: 1.134, 95% CI: 1.039~1.237) of vigorous physical activity. Heavy smoking was more prevalent among adolescents who had low level of vigorous physical activity (Adjusted OR: 1.912, 95% CI: 1.347~2.712). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, physical activity has significant influence on smoking experience and smoking intensity. Therefore, physical activity should be included smoking cessation and smoking prevention program for High School Students.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to confirm the effects of a moderate and fast walking exercise program on middle-aged women's fatigue, serum lipids and immunoglobulins. Method: A non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used for this study. The experiment was conducted for 10 weeks from May 17th to July 25th, 2004 with 44 middle-aged women, consisting of 16 for the moderate walking group, 15 for the fast walking group and 13 for the control group. Result: Walking exercise at both a moderate and fast speed was effective in middle-aged women in reducing fatigue and serum lipids. It was also revealed that extended periods of exercise was more effective in decreasing fatigue while for reducing serum lipid, high intensity exercise was more effective. In this study, serum immunoglobulins were reduced after moderate and fast walking exercise but its cause was not fully understood so further research is needed. Conclusion: This study helps us recognize the importance of regular exercise and promotes motivation to exercise for a healthy life among middle-aged women.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a moderate-intensity, walking exercise program on the body composition, blood lipids and psychosocial outcomes in postmenopausal obese women. Methods: With a quasi-experimental pre- and post-test design, a total of 36 postmenopausal obese women was recruited in 2 metropolitan areas by convenience sampling. Sixteen women participated in 1 hour of moderate-intensity walking exercise 5 days per week for 3 months and 20 women did not. Cardiovascular risk factors include body composition and blood lipids. Body composition was measured as body mass index, % body fat, and waist/hip ratio; Blood lipids were measured with total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL and LDL; psychosocial outcomes were evaluated by self-esteem and depression. Results: Over 3 months, the score of self-esteem increased and depression decreased in the exercise group relative to the control group. However, there were no significant differences in body composition and blood lipids. Conclusions: This study suggests that 3 months of moderate-intensity exercise training can improve psychosocial outcomes but further studies are needed to replicate walking exercise on physiologic variables among postmenopausal obese women. These findings are of public health relevance and add a new facet to the growing literature on the health benefits of moderate exercise.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the effect of physical activity of adult Korean males on the prevalence of diabetes mellitus. Methods: This cross-sectional study used the raw data from the 2017 Community Health Survey. The subjects of this study were 74,494 men aged 19-64 years old. The data was analyzed applying the complex sampling design and using SPSS 23.0 Program. Descriptive statistics, Rao-Scott Chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression analysis were all performed. Results: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus was 6.4%. The walking activity was 58.5% and the over moderate intensity physical activity was 27.5%. After adjusting for age, marital status, educational level, household monthly income, drinking and smoking status, and BMI, those subjects without moderate intensity physical activity had a 1.14 times higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus (95% CI = 1.05-1.24) than those men with moderate intensity physical activity. Conclusion: In order to decrease the prevalence of diabetes mellitus among adult men, regular physical activities over a moderate intensity level should be emphasized and encouraged in daily life.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) bridges with both skew and curvature are pretty common in areas with complex terrains. Existing studies have shown skewed and/or curved bridges exhibit more complicated seismic performance than straight bridges, and yet related seismic risk studies are still rare. These bridges deserve more studies in low-to-moderate seismic regions than those in seismic-prone areas. This is because for bridges with irregular and complex geometric designs, comprehensive seismic analysis is not always required and little knowledge about actual seismic risks for these bridges in low-to-moderate regions is available. To provide more insightful understanding of the seismic risks and the impact from the geometric configurations, analytical fragility studies are carried out on four typical bridge designs with different geometric configurations (i.e., straight, curved, skewed, skewed and curved) in the mountain west region of the United States. The results show the curved and skewed geometries can considerably affect the bridge seismic fragility in a complex manner, underscoring the importance of conducting detailed seismic risk assessment of skewed and curved bridges in low-to-moderate seismic regions.

  • Analytical characteristics of low power-low flow inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectometry(ICP-AES) has been studied. Although the net intensity of the low power ICP is lower than the moderate power ICP, the signal to background ratio becomes higher since the background intensity decreases with decreasing the RF power. The detection limit of the low power ICP is comparable with that of the moderate power ICP. The dynamic range of the calibration curve of the low power ICP is $10^4{\sim}10^5$. The ionization interferences by alkali metals increase with increasing the carrier gas flow rate, but the effects are not varied significantly with the RF power.

  • Moderate halophilic bacteria isolated from several kinds of salted and fermented sea foods (jeotkal) collected from commercial market were identified and investigated on their selt requirements. It was confirmed that the isolates were dominantly moderate halophiles according to their NaCl requirement to grow. And their salt requirements in their growth have been examined for Na, K, Ni and mg ions. Among them, the most dominant and distinctive three strains in protease pro-duction have been examined and two of them identified to be halophilic Flavobacterium sp., and the other one to be halophilic Pseudomonas sp..1'heir optimum growth was observed at 3$0^{\circ}C$ and at 10 percent of NaCl.

  • Recently, the concept of web site stickiness receives attention as a measure of strategy to influence user's visit and behavior on web sites. Web site stickiness means site visit frequency and stay duration. This study investigates the moderating effect of espoused national cultural values on Internet community stickiness with the assumption that dimensional values of national culture can be internalized as individual’s espoused values. Espoused values (i.e., espoused national cultural values) are defined as the degree to which an individual embraces the values of his or her national culture. Our findings can be summarized as follows. First, femininity and power distance moderate the influence of user participation on Internet community stickiness. Second, uncertainty avoidance and power distance moderates the effect of social influence on Internet community stickiness. However, femininity and collectivism do not moderate the effect of social influence on Internet community stickiness. Third, uncertainty avoidance, femininity, and collectivism moderate the influence of network effect on Internet community stickiness. Fourth, masculinity does not moderate the influence of usefulness on Internet community stickiness.
