  • A fundamental study for the production of an internal combustion engine piston by forging is performed through UBET(Upper Bound Elemental Technique) analysis and experiments. In UBET analysis, an optimal preform of the aluminum piston is predicted and the results are compared with the experimental results. The internal flow pattern and and the forging loads according to the different friction condition are investigated.

  • In this investigation, an improved integral trigonometric shear deformation theory is employed to examine the vibrational behavior of the functionally graded (FG) sandwich plates resting on visco-Pasternak foundations. The studied structure is modelled with only four unknowns' variables displacements functions. The simplicity of the developed model being in the reduced number of variables which was made with the help of the use of the indeterminate integral in the formulation. The current kinematic takes into consideration the shear deformation effect and does not require any shear correction factors as used in the first shear deformation theory. The equations of motion are determined from Hamilton's principle with including the effect of the reaction of the visco-Pasternak's foundation. A Galerkin technique is proposed to solve the differentials governing equations, which enables one to obtain the semi-analytical solutions of natural frequencies for various clamped and simply supported FG sandwich plates resting on visco-Pasternak foundations. The validity of proposed model is checked with others solutions found in the literature. Parametric studies are performed to illustrate the impact of various parameters as plate dimension, layer thickness ratio, inhomogeneity index, damping coefficient, vibrational mode and elastic foundation on the vibrational behavior of the FG sandwich plates.

  • Up to now, a number of models have been proposed and discussed to describe a wide range of inelastic behaviors of materials. The fetal problem of using such models is however the existence of model errors, and the problem remains inevitably as far as a material model is written explicitly. In this paper, the authors define the implicit constitutive model and propose an implicit viscoplastic constitutive model using neural networks. In their modeling, inelastic material behaviors are generalized in a state space representation and the state space form is constructed by a neural network using input output data sets. A technique to extract the input-output data from experimental data is also described. The proposed model was first generated from pseudo-experimental data created by one of the widely used constitutive models and was found to replace the model well. Then, having been tested with the actual experimental data, the proposed model resulted in a negligible amount of model errors indicating its superiority to all the existing explicit models in accuracy.

  • The paper describes a theoretical study on the flexural vibration of an elastic rectangular plate with periodically nonuniform material properties. The approximate solution of the natural frequency and mode shape has been obtained using the perturbation technique for sinusoidal modulation of the flexural rigidity and mass density. It has been shown that distributed modes exist in the plate which is a two-dimensional model of the flat panel speaker.

  • This paper presents analysis of Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM) using Geometry Based Analytical Model (GBAM), Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Fourier Series Model (FSM) with curve fitting technique. Further a Transient Analysis (TA) technique is proposed to corroborate the analysis. The main aim of this paper is to give in depth procedure in developing a Geometry Based Analytical Model of Switched Reluctance Machine which is very accurate and simple. The GBAM is developed for the specifications obtained from the manufacturer and magnetizing characteristic of the material used for the construction. Precise values of the parameters like Magneto Motive Force (MMF), flux linkage, inductance and torque are obtained for various rotor positions taking into account the Fringing Effect (FE). The FEA model is developed using MagNet7.1.1 for the same machine geometry used in GBAM and the results are compared with GBAM. Further another analytical model called Fourier Series Model is developed to justify the accuracy of the results obtained by the methods GBAM and FEA model. A prototype of microcontroller based SRM drive system is constructed for validating the analysis and the results are reported.

  • The main objective of this paper is to propose a new Finite Element (FE) model updating technique for damped beam structures. The present method consists of a FE model updating, a Degree of Freedom (DOF) reduction method and a damping matrix identification method. In order to accomplish the goal of this study, first, a sensitivity-based FE model updating method using the natural frequencies and the zero frequencies is introduced. Second, an Iterated Improved Reduced System (IIRS) technique is employed to reduce the number of DOF of FE model. Third, a damping matrix is estimated using modal damping ratios identified by a curve-fitting method and modified matrices which are obtained through the model updating and the DOF reduction. The proposed FE model updating method is verified using a real cantilever beam attached damping material on one side. The updated result shows that the proposed method can lead to accurate model updating of damped structures.

  • Finite element model updating has been performed using an optimization technique in the paper. The objective function consists of natural frequencies, modal assurance criterion values, and bandwidths of modes, which are obtained from finite element analysis and experiment. Young's modulus and damping coefficient of the material are selected as design variables whose values are modified to make the objective function as small as possible. To consider the loading effect of an accelerometer, its mass and moment of inertia are added to design variables. This model updating method has been applied to a cantilever beam, and experimental data are measured by modal test.

  • A great deal of external magnetic variation is required to demagnetize a magnetic material. In order to analyze a demagnetization model, hysteresis is employed and the best numerical analysis technique so far, regarding hysteresis, is Preisach model. In general, Preisach model, however, bears the instability problem with respect to convergence and hence in this paper, a method adopting M-B variables is proposed to solve the problem. In addition, comparison is made between the experimental MTF equipment and the hysteresis modeling technique for the purpose of developing an effective demagnetization protocol.

  • Considering factors such as illumination, camera quality variations, and background-specific variations, identifying a face using a smartphone-based facial image capture application is challenging. Face Image Quality Assessment refers to the process of taking a face image as input and producing some form of "quality" estimate as an output. Typically, quality assessment techniques use deep learning methods to categorize images. The models used in deep learning are shown as black boxes. This raises the question of the trustworthiness of the models. Several explainability techniques have gained importance in building this trust. Explainability techniques provide visual evidence of the active regions within an image on which the deep learning model makes a prediction. Here, we developed a technique for reliable prediction of facial images before medical analysis and security operations. A combination of gradient-weighted class activation mapping and local interpretable model-agnostic explanations were used to explain the model. This approach has been implemented in the preselection of facial images for skin feature extraction, which is important in critical medical science applications. We demonstrate that the use of combined explanations provides better visual explanations for the model, where both the saliency map and perturbation-based explainability techniques verify predictions.

  • This paper investigates the compressive deformation behavior of direct metal tooling (DMT), processing titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) parts under high strain loading conditions. Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) experiments were performed to determine the flow stress and the coefficients of the Johnson-Cook model. This model is described as a function of strain, strain rate, and temperature. SHPB experiments were performed to characterize the deformation behavior of specimens made with 3D printers, using Ti-6Al-4V material under high temperature and dynamic loading.
