Since the size effect law announced currently has been based on the normal weight concrete, for light weight concrete having different fracture characteristics, its application is questionable. Accordingly, in this study, a model equation to predict the effect of dried unit weight of the concrete on size effect of its compressive strength was developed and a database using existing research results was created. After determining the experimental constants of prediction models of Ba${\check{z}}$ant based on nonlinear fracture mechanics, Kim and Eo, and this study using the database, their results are mutually compared. Finally, it was found that the prediction model of this study considered dried unit weight of concrete predicted well the test results for light weight concrete than that of the models of Ba${\check{z}}$ant and Kim and Eo.
In this paper, the fracture characteristics of concrete specimens with different notch depths under three-point flexural loads are studied by finite element and fracture mechanics methods. Firstly, the concrete beams (the size is 700×100×150 mm) with different notch depths (a=30 mm, 45 mm, 60 mm and 75 mm respectively) are tested to study the influence of notch depths on the mechanical properties of concrete. Subsequently, the concrete beams with notch depth of 60 mm are loaded at different loading rates to study the influence of loading rates on the fracture characteristics, and digital image correlation (DIC) is used to monitor the strain nephogram at different loading rates. The test results show that the flexural characteristics of the beams are influenced by notch depths, and the bearing capacity and ductility of the concrete decrease with the increase of notch depths. Moreover, the peak load of concrete beam gradually increases with the increase of loading rate. Then, the fracture energy of the beams is accurately calculated by tail-modeling method and the bilinear softening constitutive model of fracture behavior is determined by using the modified fracture energy. Finally, the bilinear softening constitutive function is embedded into the finite element (FE) model for numerical simulation. Through the comparison of the test results and finite element analysis, the bilinear softening model determined by the tail-modeling method can be used to predict the fracture behavior of concrete beams under different notch depths and loading rates.
The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis method by using the finite element
method which can exactly analyze load-deflection relationships, crack propagations. and
stresses and strains of reinforcements, tendons, and concrete in behaviors of elastic.
inelastic and ultimate ranges of reinforced and prestressed concrete slabs under
monotonically increasing loads. For t h i s purpose, the m a t e r i a l and geometric
nonlinearities are taken into account in this study. The total Lagrangian formulation
based upon the simplified Von Karman strain expressions is used to take into account
the geometric nonlinearities of the structure. The material nonlinearities are taken into
account by comprising the tension, compression. and shear models of cracked concrete
and models for reinforcements and tendons in the concrete : and also a so-called
smeared crack model is incorporated. The reinforcements and t,endons are assumed to be
in a uniaxial stress state and are modelled as smeared layers of equivalent thickness.
For the verification of application and validity of the method proposed in this paper,
several numerical examples are analyzcd and compared with experimental results. As a
result, this method can successfully predict the nonlinear and inelastic behaviors
throughout the fracture of reinforced and prestressed concrete slabs.
To properly extract the strain components under varying operational conditions is very important in bridge health monitoring. The abnormal sensor readings can be correctly identified and the expected operational performance of the bridge can be better understood if each strain components can be accurately quantified. In this study, strain components under varying load conditions, i.e., temperature variation and live-load variation are evaluated based on field strain measurements collected from a real concrete box-girder bridge. Temperature-induced strain is mainly regarded as the trend variation along with the ambient temperature, thus a smoothing technique based on the wavelet packet decomposition method is proposed to estimate the temperature-induced strain. However, how to effectively extract the vehicle-induced strain is always troublesome because conventional threshold setting-based methods cease to function: if the threshold is set too large, the minor response will be ignored, and if too small, noise will be introduced. Therefore, an autoencoder framework is proposed to evaluate the vehicle-induced strain. After the elimination of temperature and vehicle-induced strain, the left of which, defined as the model error, is used to assess the operational performance of the bridge. As empirical techniques fail to detect the degraded state of the structure, a clustering technique based on Gaussian Mixture Model is employed to identify the damage occurrence and the validity is verified in a simulation study.
Recently, some mathematical models for the prediction on progress of carbonation of concrete were reported. These models take account for $CO_2$ diffusion and chemical reaction between $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CO_2$. Based on the assumption that $CO_2$ diffuses in the carbonation zone and reacts with $Ca(OH)_2$ at the outer face of carbonation zone and non-carbonation zone. In this study, a mathematical model to predict the progress of carbonation of concrete has been established based on the reducing concentration of $Ca(OH)_2$ in the carbonation progress zone, where $Ca(OH)_2$ reacts with $CO_2$ and $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CaCO_3$ coexist. Also, the prediction model of carbonation progress rate of concrete using the air permeability coefficient regarding to $CO_2$ diffusion is developed. As a result of this study, an expression, the model equation is obtained for the prediction of carbonation based on the time and interaction velocity between $CO_2$ and Ca(OH)$_2$ dependent air permeability coefficient. The prediction by the model satisfied the experimental data of the accelerated carbonation for painted concrete. Consequently, the model can predict the rate of carbonation and the potential service life of concrete structure exposed to atmosphere.
The paper proposes analytical forms able to represent with very good approximation the constitutive law experimentally deducible by means of uniaxial cyclic compressive tests on material having softening post-peak behaviour in compression and negligible tensile strength. The envelope, unloading and reloading curves characterizing the proposed model adequately approach structural responses corresponding to different levels of nonlinearity and ductility, requiring a not very high number of parameters to be calibrated experimentally. The reliability of the model is shown by comparing the results that it is able to provide with the ones analytically deduced from two reference models (one for concrete, another for masonry) available in the literature, and with experimental results obtained by the authors in the framework of a research in progress.

Even though structural performance evaluation techniques for reinforced concrete structures have been improved, there are still many problems in the evaluation of structural performance for underground structures which interacts with surrounding soils. Since experimental evaluation of underground RC structures considering the interaction with the surrounding soil medium is quite difficult to be simulated, the evaluation for underground RC structures using an analytical method can be applied very usefully, For underground structures interacted with surrounding soils, it is important to consider path-dependent RC constitutive model, soil constitutive model, and interface model between structure and soil, simultaneously. In this paper, an elastoplastic interface model which consider thickness was proposed and importance of interface model is discussed. The effects of stiffness of structures to entire underground RC system are investigated through numerical experiment for underground RC structure for different reinforcement ratios and thickness of interfaces.

Fracture properties for LEFM, S-FPZ and NS-FPZ models were determined using by finite element method and energy balance from the experimental results of three-point bend tests. For the LEFM model the stress intensity factor needed to increase continuously with crack extension, and for the S-FPZ model the fracture process zone characteristics need to change continuously if the critical stress intensity factor was to remain constant. The LEFM model showed the largest resistance and the slowest crack extension, while the NS-FPZ model showed the smallest resistance and the fastest crack extension. The responses for the S-FPZ model were intermediate between those for the LEFM and NS-FPZ models and the total fracture energy densities for the S-FPZ and NS-FPZ models and the total fracture energy densities for the S-FPZ and NS-FPZ models were equal.

Cracking of repair material due to restraint of shrinkage could hinder the intended extension of serviceability of repaired concrete structure. The availability of model to predict shrinkage stress under restraint condition will be useful to assess whether repair material with particular deformation properties is resistance to cracking or not. The accuracy in the prediction will depend upon reliability of the model, input parameters, testing methods used to characterize the input parameters, etc. This paper reviews a variety of models to predict shrinkage stress in patch repair system. Effect of creep and composite action to release shrinkage stress in the patch repair system are quantified and discussed. Accuracy of the models is examined by comparing predicted and measured shrinkage stress. Simplified model to estimate shrinkage stress is proposed which requires only shrinkage property of repair material as an input parameter.
A strut-and-tie model is introduced in this paper to predict the ultimate shear strength of non-seismically detailed columns. The validity and applicability of the proposed strut-and-tie model are evaluated by comparison with available experimental data. The model was developed based on visible crack patterns observed on the test specimens. The concrete contribution is integrated into the strut-and-tie model through a concept of equivalent transverse reinforcement. To further validate the model a full-scale non-seismically detailed reinforced concrete column was tested to investigate its seismic behavior. The specimen was tested under the combination of a constant axial load, $0.30f_c{^{\prime}}A_g$ and quasi-static cyclic loadings simulating earthquake actions. Quasi-static cyclic loadings simulating earthquake actions were applied to the specimen until it could not sustain the applied axial load. The analytical results reveal that the strut-and-tie method is capable of modeling to a satisfactory accuracy the ultimate shear strength of non-seismically detailed columns subjected to reserved cyclic loadings.
